im curious as to which route i should take in terms of a fixie or geared. i live in la jolla ca but commut to downtown san diego its pretty hilly and i wanted to know if there is anyone here who has any knowledge on which way to go

May not be knowledge but more personal insight...

You will get there faster with gears(especially helpful in the rain)
You will require more maintenance having to adjust brakes/derailleurs(added expense)

Fixed gear is challenging and feels verrry rewarding once you've mastered being smooth and efficient

^^ good points.

also riding fixxed doesnt mean you have to be brakeless. i run a front because i dislike nearly dieing on big hills

With the right set up uphills are fine, but with the wrong set up it really sucks

I would say maybe 20-40 degree inclines 40 being the most

are they really long hills or just a lot of lot of up n down?

Down hills are worse than uphills on fixed. Climbing on fixed, keep your speed up so you stay in the right cadence range, and hammer it. Going down is hard because the bike wants to go faster than you can spin.

It can be done. you just have to be fit.

Nah bro, use your legs to regulate your speed. Works your opposite leg muscles.

having done both. the brake is more of a fail safe. just encase something goes wrong.

I really want a fixed gear again. I'm thinking about building up something real quick and dirty, gotta go climb around in the attic and see what I have! Haha.
