hey all, new guy here from winnipeg. quick intro to myself, used to ride bikes alot, then i got a job and got busy, kinda gave it up for 2 years besides the odd weekend ride at BH or stoney once or twice a year. middle of last summer my old bike got stolen(iron horse, hard tail), so i obiously havent done any serious riding since then, other then my beater bike bake and forth to work(3blocks) every day. Im in the market for a new bike this spring, ill probably pick one up this weekend, or next. lookin to get back into riding more then ever this summer.

seems to me like most around here are with the Gords crew? or do the local ride groups intermingle? once i get my new bike and get back into shape ill likely be looking for a group to ride with. ill update once i get a new ride.

From what I've understood, Gords has the most "serious" XC group in the city. Serious as in, they'll travel for rides(Falcon, etc), and they ride often. I don't know too much about them other than that though, not really my kind of riding.

i joined the gords bike club last year in order to find more places to ride in and around the city.

since then i've been to TONS of places that i would NEVER have found without them. they have three weekly rides that i try to make it out to which are:

Wednesday night ride - a fairly large group get together (20-40 people) and cruise around town to different spots... get to learn all kinds of cool little trails all over the city.

Thursday night "shenanigan" ride - cruise to a central location like the forks, or the exchange or something and just piss around on different obstacles and take pictures and stuff. again, tons of fun.

Sunday "epic" ride - everybody meets at the gords donald street store and we load up and head out for the day. examples of places we go are Falcon Ridge, Eagle Head Lake, etc. usually pretty darn technical riding. the nice thing about it is that we stop at really fun spots on the trails and take pictures of trying to attempt crazy drops or climbs or whatever. its amazing fun and the camaraderie is off the charts.

if you havn't bought a bike yet, i suggest going to the gords donald store and talking to JF himself. let him know that you're interested in joining, and being a part of the club and he'll set you up with a great bike for a great price.

so i went with the 2010 Yukon from Olympia on Portage. I wont me joining any rides untill atleast mid june, ill be busy with school untill then. hopefully between then and now ill be able to get in a few decent rides to get me used to "long" rides again(all i ride now is the 2-3blocks back and forth to work on the beater bike).

yes there is a fee to join the gord's bike club.

a tiny portion of the fee goes towards insurance, and the rest goes towards the thousands of dollars of trailbuilding that Gords does every year. I for one completely support this model. I've been riding with Gords for the past two years and because of this I have found places to ride that I would have never imagined existed within a very short drive from Winnipeg.

the camaraderie within the club is second to none. everybody is all about going out and having fun... doing some random freeriding and trying crap out - mixed in with a bit of XC riding. it is unlike most other bike shop clubs in the city in that it has zero to do with racing.

if you're 16-20 and only interested in DJing, then Gords Bike Club probably isn't for you... But if you're twenty something and up and like to find sweet places to ride... its the ticket. I mean seriously, how often do you see trails like this anywhere near winnipeg?
here's a couple shots of our last trailbuilding outing...

Thought I'd post in here, seeing as I've been living in Manitoba since May now.

I'm assuming most of the people are are generally around the Winnipeg area and no where near Thompson lol.
