once you learn your style you can get a bike later,i recall Nicklos V. in D.S. race on a D.H. bike killing it so some times its the bike some times its the rider, but when you do go for a bike ,buy good not cheap,if you can train hard and you'll get one for free, main thing just have fun.

Go with shimano, and don't let your cleat bolts get loose. No disadvantages really, I'll never go back to flats.

bigquotesthinking about getting spd pedals, pros/cons?
The only con may be that you've got to clip in once you've got unclipped in the race run... this may be problematic at first.

Once I've changed shimano to Times, I'll never go back to them Wink Shimano's may be better for begginners as they are easier to clip in or clip out, but Times do MUCH better in mud and loose soil (actually no problems with clipping in). Besides, I have never clipped out accidentally in them yet, what used to happen to me pretty often in shimano Wink

For 4X I use clips, otherwise I go with normal flats cause I use it to ride around the city and on the trails which is more compfortable for me. But its unbelivable how much energy you can put into the bike with clicks, try it out - but let warn you: you have to train to get endurance. Otherwise you sprint 5 seconds and are out of breath Wink

I have just bought my first set of spd's, went for the m467 off CRC, i am interested to see how long they take to get used too.

I use shimano m545 as they were cheaper than others when i went to buy spd's... They work so well, and cheaper than a lot of alternatives Big Grin

whats funny is the cheaper you go shimano SPD wise, the tighter they are lol local who has run a few WC DH events swears by those old DX's with the red alloy cages lol

Not always the case, one of my friends has M424's (£30 off crc) and they are really loose but my other friend has the M545's (£50 ish) and they are really tight
