True North Movie Review. A film about downhill.

I just recently was fortunate enough to get my hands on this new movie by jon_e Beckett called "True North" If I could describe this movie with only one word, it would have to be "Brilliant"!!No fancy bells & whistles, just like the title of the movie says, pure racing footage! The filming is great, soundtrack is good, riding is top notch and sceneries are superb. Being a big fan or race videos, I really appreciated this movie. Another helpful thing was those subtitles that appeared throughout the movie. They gave you the location names, riders name and soundtrack titles.

In the opening scene, you’re teased with little cuts of what is to come! Question of getting your juices flowing! You get to see little segments of Fort William, Innerleithen, Les Gets, Aviemore, Nevegal, Strathyre, Ae Forest and Dunkeld.

Now the fun begins!

  • The movie starts of with some BSX action footage from The Bike Show 2002. See racers like Peat, Minnaar and Beaumont duke it out on the challenging Bike Show BSX track.
  • Next, you get sweet coverage of the first major race on the Scottish calendar. The Round 1 SDA (Scottish Downhill Association) race at Innerleithen. Where you can see the likes of Peat, Beaumont, Crawfy and Thomson in action.
  • Round 2 SDA race at Ae Forrest. Great helmet cam short, which give you a good feel for the course. See great local talent rippin’ it up!
  • A little dirt jumping session at Melville Trails with Chris Ball, Duke, Jim Davidson, Paul Angus, Dave Dunn and the ever-talented Stu Thomson. Again, good stuff…that place looks like a lot of fun!
  • World Cup Round one at Fort William! Great DH action followed by breath taking 4X head to head racing.
  • Round 3 SDA race at Strathyre Forest. If you think you’ve seen mud, think again! Mud racing at it’s finest.
  • Round 5 SDA race at Aviemore. Mix of mud, fast open single track, sweet tree section and insane rocky sections, make this course a favorite with most of the Scottish regulars.
  • Next you get some nice Crawford Carrick-Anderson and Stu Thomson
  • Maxxis International Cup in Nevegal, Italy. Great course, racers, filming and action.
  • Round 6 SDA race at Dunkeld, Perthshire. Steep, moss covered rocks, steep again, more rocks…..you get the idea! ;o)
  • World Cup finals at Les Gets, France. This is where Steve Peat finally got the respect he deserves. See him beat the French on their own turf! Congrats Peat!!!
  • There is no better way to end a great movie, than a tribute to a great racer. Special Peat segment and post-race celebrations.

Well there you got it. Don’t know about you guys, but after watching "True North", I immediately felt jumping on my bike and go out racing!! This movie really gives you a feel for how intense and exciting the racing scene is around Scotland! For his first, yeah you heard me, his first ever movie, jon_e did a fantastic job! Well-done mate! Plus this is not one of those short twenty some minute flicks…it’s almost an hour long! This movie will get lots of use from me!!!
