Assault Racing is a new British company that designs and manufactures some fine mountain bike components. Phil Law, Owner and Designer, was nice enough to send me a pair of MX-100 pedals for evaluation.

In their mission statement, Phil points out that they only use the finest materials! Well let me tell you he wasn’t joking. High craftsmanship and attention to details are the two other things that I noticed as soon as I opened the box. The body of these pedals is made of strong CNC’ed Alcoa 6082 T6 aluminum with beautiful, military grade, black hard anodizing. Both outer gripping plates are made of laser cut, 304 stainless steal and are inspired from MX. Just like all pins, bolts and nuts the outer plate are replaceable. These beauties spin on 16mm CNC 17/4 stainless spindles and INA sealed bearings and shaft seals. To add a nice finishing touch to this masterpiece - all logos and graphics are laser etched - very nice!!!

I've never used any BMX cage style pedals before these, so this was my first give at them. Although at first they felt strange compared to the feel of wider platform pedals, it didn’t take me long to get used to them. Just by the looks, you can automatically assume that they will grip to any shoe. Heck if you could tie them to your shoes, you could probably climb up trees! ;o) Needless to say, since they use sealed bearings, they have a super smooth action!

If you are a weight weenie, the weight of these pedals might be an issue for you. But when Assault Racing designed these pedals, they didn’t have “lightness” in mind. All the materials used was for added Strength, corrosion resistance and life span. To back it all up, Assault Racing offers a five-year warranty on these bad boys!! Also, word of caution! Always wear your shin pads with these!! Simply pushing my bike up a DH run, I slipped on a wet rock and managed to catch a pedal behind a calf...looks like a grizzly bear attacked me!! ;o)

The price is a tad on the steep side at around $200 US a pair. But you are getting a quality product with equal customer service. Might be the last pair of pedals you’ll ever have to buy!
