We had way too much fun last year shooting our first fat bike freeride video, so we knew we had to do another one this year. The goal of 2 Fat 2 Furious was to only ride things that would be harder or impossible on a regular bike. From waist-deep powder to drifty sled tracks to packed down jump lines, the boys achieved just that.

Geoff Gulevich, Wade Simmons, and Noah Brousseau got rad on their Blizzards all winter, and we're excited to show everyone the result.

bigquotesWe were having fun ripping around on the snowmobile tracks, but looking at all the pow chutes surrounding us it was only a matter of time before we were dropping in. We just had to figure out lines that were steep enough to stay afloat! -Wade Simmons

This was the first time any of the boys had hit a proper sized drop on a fat bike. Worked out better than expected!

yeah Tippie and pow is a no brainer I woulda thought...maybe he was busy shredding a bigger mountain somewhere.
  • 8 1
Really, just the Tippie would have been enough.
  • 30 2
@Patrick9-32 @Unforgiving @loamer @riffratt hah yeah, always rad to have @bretttippie on a shoot. He was busy playing Santa for our Christmas vid while this was being filmed, but he killed it last year's fat bike freeride video: www.pinkbike.com/news/can-you-freeride-a-fat-bike.html

Cheers!

If there was a fight between a polar bear, 3 moose, chuck norris, and wade simmons, there is no doubt that wade would be the victor
  • 1 0
agree with @bikerider4444 and that's because the other 5 would be too busy having a fight while Simmons would be out hitting the slopes!!! hahaha

I was a fatbike hater , until I borrowed a buddies fatbike .....then I hated to admit that it was fun, really fun!

After that I went out and bought a Borealis Flume(about 2wks ago) I've been on it everyday since the purchase. its really great, amazing to be able to ride in the winter now.....Fernie has lots of snow.
  • 8 0
That's the thing that many fat bike haters don't realize, the fact that there are people who won't see dirt again until April but still want to ride.
  • 2 0
Nice Bike! Colorado company! Yeah its 12 degrees out there thats -11C, snow on the ground. Been trying to buy a fattie for a several months now but haven't hooked up with the right one. LBS's dont have much.
  • 3 0
same thing i used to hated fat bike until i try it. we have a really crapyy winter here in quebec city, snow and rain. the ski suck but the fat bike save the winter. life is to short to have only one bike
  • 2 0
My local bike shop is pushing fatbikes super hard but it hardly ever snows around here so what's the point?

I was brought here by Snapchat.
  • 20 2
 Maybe for the younger crowd....

I just can't wait until my 48 year old body goes over the bars (again) when I meet the inevitable immovable object hidden under powder (again)....

Fun!

 Kinda hard sell though.

selling kidney for a Fat Bike !!
  • 28 9
All these Fat bike articles looks very similar to the 650B movement two years ago. My pants are at my ankles and I'm bent over, hopefully the bike industry uses lube this time.
  • 2 0
I'll keep this comment in mind next time you take my up/down some snowy trail near Kuwana...
  • 4 0
I´m not used to say this, but it kinda made me want to ride a fatty...
  • 2 0
I think you'd really only be safe riding one on an established trail, which would have been cleared. That's true of 'dry riding' too really.
  • 5 0
People who actually ride them know how much more capable they are than a normal mountain bike in the snow. People who live in California make fun of them and chalk them up as a trend.
  • 1 1
@abzillah You can get a decent fat bike for under 2k so price isn't really a big deal, in my opinion, but I guess it's all relative to what you like to spend your money on. Plus there are lots of good used ones out there for cheap. But if you want suspension get it stock, that shit is pricey after market.
  • 2 0
@gozerthegozarian I wasn't talking about the price of the bike. What I am talking about is 650B taking over everything, and no new 26 inch parts coming out. No new wheels, no new forks, no new tires, no new frames for 26 inch wheels. For example, I was waiting to upgrade my RS Lyrik fork. The new one came out but not in 26 inch, or 20mm through axle. Yes, I can get a Fox fork in 26 inch, but I bought all the tools needed to service RS shocks and forks.

So I'm hoping that this new BOOST FAT Tire stuff doesn't do to the current market what 650B.
It's fine that 650B came out, what's not okay is that I can't maintain my 26 inch bike with new parts.
  • 1 0
@abzillah Yeah I get where you're coming from, it sucks to invest in something only to have the industry drop it, I don't think 26 will ever be completely gone, but the industry may not support it with as much stuff as in the past. Still stuff has to progress and you can't blame the industry if they don't want to invest in older tech. How many high end bikes come with V-brake mounts still? Or try finding a new fork with a full 1.5 steer tube. It is equally the greatest time and the most frustrating time to be into this sport. Besides just wait ten years, suddenly this new awesome wheel standard will come out that provides a stiffer wheel with faster acceleration, they call it a, a... 26ER! Good luck, and happy trails.

I run a ski lodge in winter.I bought a fat bike last year and went out into areas i would never have considered previously.A friend and i rode out to Mt Kosciusko(australias highest peak) pushed up and rode back down at stupid speed,it was brilliant!.
I snow board as well, but when its school holidays and the mountain is packed its pretty cool going out back country and literally being the only person out there, and the increased cardio it gives you is a nice added bonus.
  • 4 2
What has stopped you from going out into those backcountry areas with your snowboard? If you are pushing a bike up couldn't you easily hike with a snowboard or use a split board in those same areas?
  • 2 0
Good split set up will cost you more than a Fat bike, in some cases.
  • 2 0
Kosciusko is nearly 20 kms tothe base from my front door, much of it flat, uphill and undulating, not particularly good snow board terrain, but fine on a bike..but this year a few of us will ride out to Kosciusko with our boards and have a crack. The areas that i ride are off the cross country trails that allow snow shoeing so no one minds me riding them.there are some nice chutes and things that i havent tried yet but plan to this year. there is no snow at the mountain bike resort im working at now and its still great fun riding the trails up here, even the pump track.

  • 4 0
true! I just found it strange the flip wasn't even mentioned

@holden-biking @Patrick9-32 @bobbydale Noah's 3 this year was awesome for sure, snow is scary to carve off lips. Gotta credit Gully last year with a big natural terrain fat bike flip for the banger of our first fat bike freeride vid. www.pinkbike.com/news/can-you-freeride-a-fat-bike.html

this is my friends fatbike....it's badass for a fatbike Smile
he hit's some decent size jumps/drops/gaps/rollers in the snow on it too..
plus he grooms the trails when riding it so skinny tires can ride in the snow too....

 Crazy fatbike freeriders!!
  • 10 0
 Where the hell was Tippie?
  • 8 0
That's what I was thinking too! I've heard him refer to his "fat ass" more then once. You think the words "fat biking", "fat ass", and "Tippie" would be marketing gold!
  • 1 0
Rocky responded to this exact question near the top of the confusion recently. I believe he was being santa for another video at the time....would have been epic though fosho.
  • 33 25
i can't get why people want to ride bikes in the powder when there's a thing called snowboard.
  • 10 4
Maybe because snowboard is going only down, when bike goes down, flat and up. Don't get me wrong, I love snowboarding too, but only when there is something that can get me lifted back to the top.
  • 77 5
We didn't realize that we had to choose between the two. All good fun!
  • 9 0
When you have a knee as ruined as mine snowboarding and skiing aren't an option any more unfortunately. Love my ski bike, but having fat tyres opened up the winter mountains to me again.
  • 14 0
It's just another way to go out and enjoy the snow! It's usually more convenient than going to a mountain, no lift tickets, and you can go out for a quick hour - two hour ride.
  • 8 1
Yea fat bikes are fun dudes, there just isn't any way around it. Try, and be impressed.
  • 7 4
for all the uplift-related problems there's a thing called ski-touring, you can do it even with the snowboard (it's called splitboard)
  • 6 1
Yes but that's not a bike..... For me it's been cool having one. I like to snowboard but I live a good two hours from a decent mountain. So riding through the winter, in mixed conditions- including but not limited to snow- is a reality. We don't get enough consistent snow fall to xc ski. In other parts of the continent both to the north or south It would be frivolous. If there are good mountains with deep powder all winter then I'd board every day. No snow at all, doesn't make sense. In New England, it's a useful tool.
  • 7 2
Because people like different things than you do. Why do you assume they can't do both snowboard and ride a bike?
  • 2 1
Darkstar, have you heard of Delilah Jones?
  • 5 7
I agree. There are very limited conditions where fat bikes are any good. You don't see them pedaling in deep snow only going down a steep decent or on groomed trails. Unless the snow is packed or only a few inches deep they are not much good. Look at the video closely and see how deep the snow is where they are on the level or ascending. This video was made by a bike company to sell fat bikes so of coarse they are going to make it look easy + fun. Here in southern Ontario they seem to be a hard sell and there are allot of used low mileage ones for sale. Another fad that will die out in a few years. I ride all winter but on country roads with a cyclocross bike and studded tires. Works great and keeps me in shape for the trails in the spring.
  • 3 0
Delilah Jones was the mother of twins, Two times over and the rest were sins, Raised eight boys, only I turned bad... @Ryanrobinson1984
  • 2 1
Yea some of the "trail" riding shots are likely packed snowmobile trails with powder on top, I agree that conditions must be met. Where I live you get a lot of snow and then melt, so packed snow, melt and then re-frozen, or minimal snow... happens quite a bit. You can also seek out snowshoe/hiking/xcski trails that have been packed down pretty well. @Manx
  • 2 0
 Hell yes, my son!
  • 3 1
I'm not trying to be a dick, but how can you not believe that people just want to go ride a bike period?? Bikes are sick. Riding them with friends is awesome. Doing it year round, getting loose and having fun is what it's all about. I'm a diehard skier, but I'm hooked on fattys, and biking, period.
  • 4 0
I rented Fat bikes for a day as part of a "don't knock it until you try it" experience. I did truly have fun, and I'd like to do it again. But it didn't make me want to spend serious money buying one. Riding in the deeper snow was super exhausting and not terribly fun. Riding on the packed in stuff didn't strike me as terrain that couldn't be ridden on a regular mtn bike or plus bike. Where they are ideal are such specialized conditions that I think the ROI is questionable
  • 6 0
Ha! They are reusing the Blizzard name for a fat bike...I had one of those old Blizzard bad boys back in the days: steel is the deal!
  • 5 0
Not that I needed this edit to want one but, here is how you sell a fat bike ! Looks loads of fun !

Industry insider told me gwin will be on the new RM blizzard Wc bike this race season
  • 2 1
Not trying to be negative, but all i kept thinking was "damn that would be a lot more fun on ski's". Respect to the guys riding, but watching them in this terrain doesn't get me near as stoked as what they do on dirt.
  • 3 0
Didn't even read the article, just want to like it for the name. Well done.
  • 2 1
Looked fun for sure! Still, I wouldn't buy a fatbike unless I lived in an area which is covered in snow for half the year, or in a desert. It's probably a very fun bike for a very niche market.
  • 5 0
Canada is a pretty big "niche market" considering that even here in northern US fatties dominate the winter
  • 1 0
@Mattin if you ride a Fattie for more than an hour you will by floored at their capabilities in all conditions, and now with the Plus sized tires making waves in the market the quality of the tires will only get better, thereby making them even more capable.!
  • 2 0
Do Fat Bike tires still cost twice as much as car tires? $70 for a Minion is bad enough but I thought I saw Fatties for $180. EACH.

This is a cool videos and those guyd look like they are having a blast. But we should all keep in mind that this is a marketing video and these riders are some of the best in the world. They make it look super fun, but they are also capable of doing things on bikes the 99.9% of is are not. The vast majority of riders are not going to be able to do they types of things done in this video. Riding lines as steep as those in deep snow is extremely difficult. This is just like a video Rocky Mountain put out a couple years ago (I think with the same crew) where they were just destroying some gnarly trails and jumps and drops on hardtails. It was awesome and showed the capabilities of their hardtails bikes, but it was riding the only a handful of the best riders in the world can pull off.
  • 6 0
Nahhhh with that attitude why get on a bike? Heck only some many "special" pro's have skillz, I think Not. . . .There are a lot of riders in the 1% you just don't know them or ride with them. They exist and are out there, shredding right now. You can ride anything on a smaller travel or hard tail, anything, it just takes more skill (mitch chubey) told me so. You can be the best rider in the world if you commit and send it, don't let the voice in your head or anyone other's voice disagree. Hand ful, no, Lots everywhere.
  • 2 0
@ sino428 That would account for 99% of the bike videos out there. and 99% of the car videos out there, and 99% of the ski videos out there, and 99% of the... just add " 99% of" to ALL of the sports videos you have EVER watched.
Go rent a fat bike.
  • 1 2
@bikerider4444 - yes its more than a handful. But you said it yourself, its still the 1%. Even if you are generous, and say its the top 20%, that still leaves most mountain bikers unable to do what these guys are doing. I'm just saying the video is awesome, but if people think they are going to buy a fatbike and suddenly start floating down steep faces in a foot+ of powder they are going to be disappointed.

@enduroelite - you are 100% correct. And that was my point. This is just marketing like every other video. My comment was directed toward the people who see this video and say wow, fat bikes are kind of cool. Point is, if you didn't like the idea of fatbikes before, something like this shouldn't change ones mind, because what these guys are doing in the video is unrealistic for most people. Just like the hard tail video I mentioned. If someone wasn't a fan of hard tails, seeing a bunch of pros ripping on them should not really change ones mind.
  • 1 0
I ride a mini fat bike, it's called a moutain bike. 26" wheels dual ply 2.5 ties, good to go. Lets say 20%, that's one out of 5 friends, or 1 out of 10, look at the numbers in your place of riding, I"m sure there are a few pro's in the area or dudes that can keep up fine with pro's that don't race or put logo's on their cloths and stuff. I think people ARE going to buy a fat, mini fat, mid fat, fat plus, non road bike fat, fatties, tires made of Native seeds with mushroom spoores that shrednocluate the trail, it's all good to go. I'd say go big and have fun on what ever bike you have (even Road bikes), what does it matter what other people can or can not do? Impressions are you buy a bike, go ride and you WILL have fun. Sorry. that's how it works bud. oh and smoke some sativa, your 8 off buddy. Oh yeah I ride a fr hard tail at parks like winter park and can keep up with most on there full 8/8 rigs, am I having less fun or more, neither, just a dude on a bike.

Is there anyone else in the world who rides their fat bike in the dirt?

This snow/sand cliche is getting really tired now
  • 2 4
Apparently it has huge pedal bob, the wide tyres act like a skippy ball when pedaling. That's why people only go up to Plus on dirt, and people start using Fatbikes in snow/sand.
  • 7 1
I ride mine year round. If you get the tire pressure correct, there isn't bob. There is what feels like infinite traction, though.
  • 2 2
Every demo I've been on one felt like I was riding a bounce ball every time it got rough (always dry). Perhaps they really are snow/sand specific.
  • 2 0
@Rubberelli I ride them all year and @sd531 is right; correct tire pressure is vital. 1-2 psi more than you should have will cause bounce etc instead of sucking up the undulations in the terrain. When you get the PSI nailed it's amazing.
  • 1 2
 YES!
  • 2 1
I had Specialized mechanics set it and then went back to them and they adjusted the pressure, took it back out and this time bounced off a rock so much I lost control and crashed.I suppose you could probably go safer through a rock garden at slow speeds on one, but where's the fun in that?
  • 2 0
I hit rock gardens faster on my rigid fatty than I did on the 5" FS rig I came off from.

That being said, I am considering another bike that is a bit lighter for long summer rides.
  • 5 0
I guess all in all, your just not going very fast on both bikes! Sorry, couldn't resist.

You're probably very right, I do know that my lungs and legs are in much better shape when the trails open back up in May, though.
