2008 Gravity Light Super Wide Handlebars - 800mm to boot!
Nov 13, 2007
For quite some time gravity riders have been asking for wider riser bars - many going as far as jury-rigging their own bars with extensions to make them wider.
Not so long ago the norm was 26”, then came 27” bars, 28” and now Gravity by FSA is offering their Gravity Light bar in Super Wide format at a tree snagging 31.5” (800mm).
This past season, many Gravity sponsored riders have been spotted riding these bars and finally they are available to the public. I personally think it’s a great idea to offer super wide bars – you can always cut them if you don’t like them at full width, which is what I assume most riders will do. There is no denying that wider bars offer much more stability as speed and on steeps. I’ll admit that I was a bit skeptical when wide bars were first introduced – but now I’m a believer. I even run 710mm wide bars on my trail bikes.
The new super wide Gravity Light sells for about $80.00 USD but currently supply is a bit limited. They come in 25mm rise and in OS only (31.8mm clamp) with 9 degree back and 4 degree up sweep. They weigh about 403 grams – a bit heavier than the 710mm bars, but FSA had to make them a little beefier because at this width, they have to be!
710mm vs 800mm Gravity Light
Gravity Light OS bars are some of the lightest aluminum risers on the market. At home I have a plethora of 710mm bars and the Gravity Light’s are at the light end of the scale at around 275 grams.
I’ve been using quite a few Gravity and FSA components as of late and couldn’t be happier. FSA Orbit Xtreme Pro headsets are a norm on all my bikes, including my 1.5 Iron Horse 7Point.
I’ve also been running the new 2 piece Gravity Crank sets with ceramic BB on both my DH and long travel trail bike – smooth, still and maintenance free are three words that come to mind.
Check out www.ridegravity.com for their full lineup of products. They also have a nice video section with footage of Gravity sponsored riders – sweet!

Big thanks to Matt, Sam and Chris at FullSpeedAhead for the great CS and taking the time to answer my numerous questions over the years!

why 800 mm? i have a roox torque-bar, 730 mm and sometimes it feels too big. do you really need that much or u just want to end up with bigger pieces of handlebar after u cut it ?
haha, I like your comment about the bigger pieces after it's cut. That's funny.
I think it's personal preference. Some of my friends ride really narrow, racer style bars, but personally I love a ultra wide chopper bar. Also someone is a small skinny guy, their shoulders are really narrow so they probably would like a narrow bar compared to someone like me, at 6'4" and broad. An 800mm bar to me probably feels like a 600mm to others.
So I welcome the new bigandtall product line

FSA/Gravity retailers should start receiving them soon. I'm 98% certain Go-Ride.com already has some in stock.
* should be instead of that???
and yeah I know about Sam - but still..props are given when props are due. he's been more than helpful over the years.

oh, that was meant for a correction on my 1st post. It says "how are that ceramic bb..." , should've been "how are the ceramic". Yea Sam's a good guy.
Ceramic BB's have been solid. After using them for a few week, I decided to mount the stock BB shells to compare - the difference was immediately noticeable. The Ceramic BB is much more smoother. It's like when I upgraded my XT cups with Phil Wood bearings.
if it's your cup-o-tea, what's stopping you form putting wide bars on your all-mountain bike? I'm more than happy with 710mm bars on my AM and XC bikes, but whatever floats your boat.
damn guys - who said I was running the 800mm bars on my Enduro? sorry if I confused some of you - maybe I shouldn't have included that pic. I run the 710mm Gravity Light bars on my other bikes and the 800mm on my DH bike.
You can guarantee that Luc is ripping hard on his DH rig with the 800s and that he's rocking wide (710mm) bars on his smaller travel trail bikes. I think that a few folks are simply confused by the pics, but yes wider bars for each application create a more stable ride. (Just be cautious when it gets really tight)
Thanks Tyler. yeah you really need to be cautious when running wider bars, especially on your trail bike...I broke a knuckle this summer after tagging a root that was sticking out of the hill side - really no fun!

Someone tell me where I can buy these bars, 31.5 inch. thats what I run on my KTM 250 in the Grand National Cross Country series (which for those of you that dont know, thats dirtbike racing), thats pretty wide but it gives ya room to work with, I need some wider bars for my giant glory for sure. be good everyone
"800's ....useless..it's too wide for dh...good for trials though..."
Fabian Barel would disagree with you.

Any LBS can get them for you np, have them contact FSA/Gravity. They will be sick on a Glory for sure.

it's too wide! have you ridden a trial bike thas has 800mm bars? 710 is good enough for dh...it's like diving a Mini with a tractor steering wheel!
i have a small word of caution or really a questyion about these wider bars...
anyone have an opinion on rotator cuff injuries here?
i see the beenfit of the wide bar as more leverage, and it actually lowers your CG by spreading your arms out and getting your torso lower. both better for control.
BUT
when it comes to general upper body strength, you are your strongest when your arms are in line with your shoudler width. it is the happy medium of arm, chest, back and shoulder strength. by moving your arms further out, you are also increasing the leverage to do damage to the shoudler joint int he event of hard impact or getting off.
i'm kind of pulling this out of my a$$, but i've been through rehab on both shoulders from crashes (i am a hack) so i thought i'd bring it up... or we can count the injury tally at sea otter.

thats a good point, and your logic makes total sense. Ill be rocking 30s this year, after 29s last year. Its amazing the difference wide bars make.

UK companies have been producing wider bars for a while now:
20mm rise versions.
Reverse FLi XXL bar is 279 gms, and 760mm wide. £49.99
Burgtec Ride Wide 256gms, 750mm wide and £75.00
the bigger companies are now just jumping on board.

Perhaps it's time to try these: I ride 32.5" protaper mx bars on an azonic zero stem. I find the short stems fast steering is slowed by the wide bars, but the front-end weight is of some concern with monsters. Also, I've become used to singletrack with tight trees that require a bar twist.
I like the zero reach which keeps you far behind the fork and the sweep. Although a narrower bar would sharpen the angle of your elbows and put you farther back, I like the angle the wide bars give the elbows, and the stem and sweep already have me back.
