Video: UCI 2013 Men's DH Season Recap

Apr 1, 2014
by Tyler Maine

At the beginning of the 2013 season, the double world cup title winner Aaron Gwin was the man to beat. But at the season opener at Fort William, the American could only finish 20th -- the beginning of a surprisingly unsuccessful season. Three races later, he eventually managed to get onto the podium, only to forfeit the last two races due to an injury.

It still amazes me that Stevie smith was the first Canadian to get the wc overall. British Columbia is considered the Mecca of mountain biking isn't it?!

I want Loic Bruni get good results in 2014, and I want a round 2 of Stevie vs Gee Smile

Well, if they held most of the world cup races on the same continent as Canada, you would probably see more success from Canadian riders.

haha was just thinkin. will they battle again? That would be sweet to watch.13more days....................... an the countdown begins..........come on rob warner, get your funny ass one liner's ready.
  • 34 2
lukachadwick....... you are confusing people who ride bikes in the mountains with people who race. two totally different breeds of riders. our country has tons of people who rip, but very few with the commitment to truly develop a race craft.

It's very different in Britain! Sounds well chilled out in canada! Even mre reason to move there. Wink

  • 2 0

In regards to Smith being the first canadian for world cup downhill overall winner and why Canada is arguably the mecca of Gravity MTB, just look at the number of top level free ride orientated riders that Canada produces.

Also another point (and I'm being a little bias here), Australia has some of the best downhillers/gravity riders for a country that has next to no hills.

Hamm was going to say that. Race location is no excuse we in aus on top of that also don't have the luxury of the training trails that Canada has yet we still have pumped out some crazy good riders in our time. Our local scenes also don't get many riders like te BDS and the like do, our pros have onl recently started been more present at races. It is surprising though that it took so long for canada to get a win. The standout for me is lori and remi, Ill be keeping a close eye on those guys.

I'm afraid he's lost his magic. He had a couple seasons what everything came together and was nearly perfect and it was fun to watch. Probably the most dominating 2 year stretch of World Cup performance we will ever see. But he has had some significant injuries the last couple years and that was the reason he quit racing moto. I don't think his head was in the game last year, so he should at least be competitive this year and maybe even win a race. But not 4. Gwin is the new Sam Hill, fans always thinking he can cheat father time and get his old dominance back. My money is on Blenki this year.

 aram gwill?

How are you going to compare Sam Hill and Gwin? They are almost completely opposite. Sam Hill is a loose, dangerous rider who hangs everything out there (which is why he is so fun to watch). Gwin holds it together better than pretty much any other rider and is almost "boring" to watch even though he is so fast because he is a perfectionist. You don't see if blowing corners or letting the rear wheel get way out in a corner and barely manage to get it back in time for the next.

gwin is a true gentleman and give a lot to his fan. he's a great ambassador of the sport but i'm canadian and i want stevie to win !!!!! another great ambassador of the dh scene
  • 1 3
Ambassador to the sport? I really don't give a shit about that. Isnt that just one of those catch phrases people use when they can't think of anything interesting to say about a racers personality? Athletes are not role models, f*ck that politically correct bullshit. I wanna see a guy who tells the truth and does what he wants; drinks, smokes, hookers, binges, doping rumors, wrecked bikes, flipped off fans, shocked moms, dismayed Dads, and disapointed children who never got an autograph or even a smile. Mountain biking needs a Charles Barkley, we haven't had one since Napalm.

I was comparing Gwin and Hill in the sense that they are both be over the hill in terms of the dominance they once had.

i went to MSA with my kids and they were really happy when gwin sign them an autograph, my reality is different from yours Protour but i understand your point. My idol when i was a teenager was Shaun Palmer.
don't forget 95% of the time i use french so i'm not that good in written english and i sometime i don't use the right word. Pinbike is my english class

I'd love to see bryceland on top of the podium this year, if only to read the "i cant understand a word he says" comments from the non britains.

Minaar is always going to be a contender too, both him and gee are doing a good job of keeping some of the young guns back.

It would be cool to see a ladies recap as well... you know cause there are women who read and watch these forums too. Just saying.

Keen to see an Aussie stand on top of the podium again. If an Aussie or a kiwi is not on top I'd love to see rat boy win one. I think Sam can win another one he just needs a bit of luck.

this is so weird. you're supporting riders because they ride a certain wheel size. i dont get it, you were never forced to ride another wheel size why are you so against people who ride it.
