2014: A Photo Epic - The Complete EWS Story

The Sophomore Year

Second albums are killers. Ask any musician, it's your sophomore attempt that's the toughest album. Your first release is a freebie - chances are nobody knows much about you and people are simply trying to work out whether they like you or not. The pressure comes when your first album is good, now you have to deliver. It's sink or swim time - a weak second album has been the deathkiss for many a promising career. That's where the Enduro World Series found itself this year - at the difficult second album stage. 2013 was a good year, everything was new and exciting and nobody entirely knew whether it was going to work or not. In a very real sense 2014 was the year that will go down as the make or break point for the series, the tipping point of whether it was a nice idea that didn't quite work out, or something set become part of the permanent landscape of our sport. Sitting here some six months later, it seems clear that the Enduro World Series is with us to stay. This year we had seven great races spread across three continents; we have seen five male winners and three female with hours of racing coming down to margins of a tenth of a second; and we've ridden and raced what might be some of the best trails in the world... What's more, a series developed and funded from within the sport is working, both on and off the track. If that's not a good sign for the future of our sport, then we don't know what is. So sit back, grab a drink and enjoy all the action from the 2014 Enduro World Series.

Meet the real Jerome Clementz. He really is as relaxed as he appears away from the races but he doesn t usually let people see the other side the side we saw on the finish line today. He wasn t leaving a single tenth of a second on the table for Graves he wanted it bad. He admits that it s going to be a tough season of racing if he wants to hold onto his title though.

What can you say about Fab Barel In Chile this year he fractured five vertebrae and is still in physio trying to fully overcome that horrific injury. This weekend he came here with no expectations he just wanted to take it day-by-day and see if he could complete the race. In the end even he could not seem to believe what he achieved. He was still trying to get his head around what he achieved when he headed for the podium.
Winners - Fabien Barel :: Anne-Caroline Chausson

Say what you like about the marketing hype surrounding it, but Enduro is a fantastic discipline!

"It's the most natural form of mountain bike racing, you just do what you can do and get to the bottom, that's what's cool about enduro. You just got to keep fighting every stage and give everything you got"

Can't we already ascend to a bit higher level of consciousness and separate Enduro hype, Enduro racing, Enduro riding then acknowledge and love them all and cut Enduro shit talk? You know, like some people are able separate Church and God, suddenly seeing the bloke being quite cool and chilled, less like a old man in the sky that counts how many times you masterbate (sorry preacher but it turns him into a big ass pervert)? Let's start Enduro LOVE! God wants you to make love and make Enduro and doesn't mind if you do it alone.

Spirit of Enduro

AMEN! The church of Nature and Outdoors!

i'm with ya, Waki. Church of the Latter Day Recreationalists..enlightenment thru enduro

No Church darn it! Church requires identity, therefore it forms an image of God, schisms, it builds walls around itself by making rules and imposing them on believers, it tries to constitute itself as a middleman between people and God, but one that is necessary and one cannot reach God therefore salvation without it.

True Enduro has no rules, it is only you, your bike and the trail. Thy shall love your clipped in brethren just like those on flat pedals, those with front derailleurs like those with singlespeed, ones on 15k bikes and ones on 10yr old bikes, everyone is invited, even those who record their ride on action camera or Strava. 24", 26" or 29er let thy sould be as soft as a fatbike. So should you free yours soul by embracing lycra and latest TLD kit, bar ends and 820mm bars. But if you cut a trail to get a KOM or just make it easier to yourself then you deserve to be thrown into the pit with Backdoor sons of Sodomy and they shall stretch your starfish with their filthy bats until we can fit 42t cassette ring in there.

even abbadon is tired of strava and puny mortals attempting to be king of any thing stay away from his pits.

Church=some windbag telling me that God talks to him and tells me what to do.
God=I talk to him, (and he doesn't tell me to tell anyone else what to do-or say anything at all, not that that matters)
I don't need a bomb shelter, I've got a bike.
  • 1 0
If that bike's a kona then you'll need a bombshelter too
  • 2 2
@Codypup - I am building a bomb shelter because HutchJR found oil in my comment... if I sit on oil then obviously I may have weapons of mass destruction, be a tyrant or both at once, which inevitably leads to NATO military intervention. It's been some time now since I wrote it and preemptive strike may be on the way...

Enduro is getting just as big as DH.
  • 5 1
Have you seen the lengths of startlists on DH and Enduro races? Enduro is larger than life!

Enduro is bigger than the Beatles

I have raced DH for most of my mountain bike career but have made the transition over to Enduro, All-mountain, Super D styles of racing. No matter your opinion, these styles of races are so physically and mentally demanding above and beyond what most people can understand. In fact, I never felt so hammered in a DH race as I do after just several stages of Enduro. World Cup DH racing in comparison is like Formula 1 auto racing and Enduro is like WRC rally racing as another pinkbiker pointed out. You just have to grind it out, stage after stage and hopefully it all comes together (Bike, Body, and Mind) that you make it to the end of the day. DH riding and racing will forever be my roots and in my heart but I am appreciative of the new disciplines of racing that allows anyone from the competitive to the weekend warrior to test their physical and mental ceiling. The ultimate test of one's potential. Safe off season to all.

Here's some participant stats - Enduro VS. DH - on a Northwest US local series scale.
Oregon Enduro Series, Hood River: 270 vs. NW Cup #1, PA: 314.
Feel free to do some homework and tally away. I use the PNW as the example because the NW Cup and Oregon Enduro Series are equally killer and reach a similar crowd/region/demographic.

Then consider the millions of views Rampage gives to MTB - online and on mainstream TV.
A guy like Cameron Zink is a household name, like Evil Knievel, nowadays.

What inspiration does anyone draw from Enduro racing? Curious to know here.

easily explained. Whenever i see the EWS reports I think to my self: f**k this looks epic and i makes me want to jump on my bike and ride that trail right that moment! It makes me check prices on Flights to Chile, it makes me load my car and drive to Finale...

As cool as rampage and DH world cups are to watch, and i watch all of them, they do not inspire me to do this myself.

Ah man, where do I start! You ever raced with the coolest, nonjudgmental people, without cliques, totally pinned on anything from a hardtail to a 7" free ride bike?

Instead of 3 minutes of racing on DH trails, you are racing 20-45 minutes on DH trails with a trailbike. 3-6 hours on the bike. It takes DH to a whole other level.

Don't need any shuttle (although we welcome them with open arms). It really is the most natural form of mountain biking, and it's more gnarly than DH because of the fatigue.
