2014 Trailblazer Series: The Fraser Valley’s Local Enduro Races

Apr 6, 2014
by Tyler Maine
Spring means that grassroots mountain bike racing is back in the Fraser Valley. The Fraser Valley Mountain Bikers Association, in partnership with Mission Springs Brewing Company, Rocky Mountain Bicycles and Flatiron/Graham is proudly dishing up another year of enduro racing with our popular Trailblazer Race Series. This is a fun race series that is only as competitive as you make it. While you might see everything from spandex to full face helmets, you really won’t need either (but you will need a helmet to race).

There will be three enduro races, on three different mountains this year. Most venues are within an hour drive from Vancouver and will showcase some favourite Fraser Valley trails. Mark the following dates so you don’t miss out:

● April 27 at Vedder Mountain in Chilliwack
● May 25 at Bear Mountain in Mission
● June 22 at Sumas Mountain in Abbotsford

Registration will be from 8-9am on race day and the real fun begins at 10am when we start the racing. We will have a 100 participant cap to each race, so it would be a good idea to pre-register online. The pre-registration fee is $15/race and day of registration will be $20. The three categories will be competitive, recreational and an “I don’t race” untimed category. Similar to last year, we will also have a $5 deposit (bring cash) for your race plate. Keep your plate for all three races and bring it back for a refund, or hang it in your man, or lady, cave and feel good about supporting the FVMBA. A racing license is not required, but a current FVMBA membership for, $20/year is.

If you have never been to an FVMBA, you can expect a fun atmosphere for the whole family. In addition to having the “I don’t race” category, there will be activities catered towards beginner riders. A food truck will also be on hand and there will be lots of draw prizes for racers and volunteers alike. If you really aren’t interested in riding, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities available. Email volunteer@fvmba.com to sign up.

These races are a great way to support your local trails as the races have a positive impact on the trails in a couple of ways. Like last year, the proceeds of each race will be dedicated to the trails on that mountain. To further support the trails, the FVMBA will be holding 3 trail days in each area prior to the races and you are invited join the fun. This is an excellent way to give back to the trails you ride, earn a free entry (BOOM magic words) to one of the Trailblazer races. The trail days will be held on:

● February 23, March 9 and April 6 for Vedder,
● February 16, March 16 and April 13 for Bear,
● March 30, April 26 and May 24 for Sumas

Yes, some of those dates have already passed, so you better act fast if you want to race Bear or Vedder for free.

The generosity of the following sponsors is what make this grassroots race series so rad:

We thank each of these companies for their generosity and support that help this to be such a successful and fun event.
