Danny's hart-stopping run at Champery – the culmination of a quest that started years before – signaled the beginning of a new journey down a path paved with championship stripes.

In the first instalment of "Hart and soul," we go back to the beginning, to the little fishing village of Redcar, England and see how Danny's style and dedication to his sport developed from an early age.

the whole family deserve his success

Look at 5:20. Even at a young age, Hart had the foot-out, loose riding style he still has now.
  • 4 0
Is it me or is that Josh Bryceland at 6:31 hahah!
  • 3 0
I love to see the support his family puts behind him and how happy they got when he won at the Worlds... One of my favorite riders to watch definitely!
  • 1 2
@Martinezorlando your right you cant care what humans think, only cats
Cool backstory to the vid and fantastic riding but that music was absolute shit

I'm all for it, but why does he get so much coverage for winning one race? I see the overall as a much bigger title

2 cents
  • 76 8
Its because he is that kid from GB that no one really knew about. He had been on the gun all season and absolutely giving it his all and he didn't quite get the top step of the podium. And during world champs, everyone thought gwin had it, but when the rain hit, he was in his element, it was his time to shine. And he stepped up to the plate and managed to take the win. Yes, Gwin had a great season, but that one run at world champs means more than every other WC's. It just holds more weight. And winning that race means he can call himself the best rider in the world. He is the world champion.
  • 11 0
you could sum up by saying Gwin definitely deserved the World Cup title, and Hart definitely deserved the World Champs title but whatever

One race that decides it all, it just doesn't sit well with me. I'm just all for the consistency. Danny is a great PR story to boot so it makes sense. I don't mean that in a critical sense.
  • 5 0
youre not wrong, consistency is everything. you could say gwin as well as hart came from nowhere, making both their success' worth shouting about in equal measures Smile
  • 5 3
Im not too fussed. I had been rooting for danny to take a win all season so i was stoked. I think that one race holds more weight though. as sam hill said, you can win every world cup, but unless you win the world champs you cant call yourself the best rider in the world. And Gwin didn't come out of nowhere, everyone knew he had the skills to pay the bills when they watch The Tipping Point back in 09
  • 1 0
I've watched that so many times now lol great film!
But coma red to the other guys he's been relatively quiet.
Just sneaking up the ranks
  • 16 0
Think its also the winning margin on that track in those conditions it as more than just winning a race it was destroying the rest of the field
  • 5 0
Yeah same, i still get goose bumps when Blinki wins the world cup at the end and i have seen it many many times. many many.
  • 4 2
And you've gottta love Leov as well. "And that was a pretty easy decision, i was just like, f*ckn' do it boy!" Mountain biking ♥

Completely agree and the only reason I can see for the epicness is because he did beat everyone by an insane margin. But unless someone can prove me wrong, I think this is the most over the top coverage anyone has ever gotten for winning a single race. I mean he was improving as the season went on and he did have his group of fans that knew he could destroy it so I wouldn't exactly call him an underdog or say he came out of nowhere... I don't get it really... but whatever, he's always fun to watch footage of.
  • 26 3
@scott-townes on every single post about dany hart since the end of the season you have been commenting saying the two same things 1. "did everyone forget about gwin or something?" and 2. "it was only one win why does he get so much attention?" So now im gonna clear things up for you so you dont have to ask this question on part 2. For number 1 no everyone did not "forget" about gwin but this post is about Danny so shut up. And for number 2 the way i see it its like football, ya gwin won allot during the season but Danny won the Superbowl.
  • 3 0
 @scott-townes
look at the time(s) Sam Hill and Shauwn palmer used to put into people.
3 seasons ago sam put 7 seconds or more into his competitors
  • 7 0
when you have a kid who wins world championships at 18-19 by over 11 seconds and dosent get a video about him remember you said that.
  • 7 1
Only an american would say that^ (@scott-townes)
  • 10 10
I dont really agree with winning one race and calling yourself the best rider in the world. Danny Hart is obviously an insanely talented rider who had an amazing world champs run nobody can take that from him. But Aaron Gwin easily proved that he is the best. Look at the facts people, Gwin set a WORLD RECORD. He won 5 races in a single season something nobody has EVER done before. Most of his wins were also by pretty considerable margins. On the topic of coming out of nowhere, I don't think anybody could of predicted Gwin's success in 2011 anymore than they could of predicted Danny's and Gwin started riding a mountain bike only 3 years prior. It's not wrong to say that Danny Hart did something amazing, but to call him the best rider in the world is ignorant. It is so plainly obvious to see that Danny's sponsors are milking this for all they can. Nevertheless, there is nothing wrong with that. It would be the same for any young rider who had just won world championship's by 11 seconds. In all honestly, I too am tired of hearing about Gwin on every single world cup video since last september, and this video is not about Gwin its about Danny Hart and celebrating his amazing achievements. It is just frustrating to see people call Danny Hart the best in the world just because he won a single race. And @yeahbro, you cant look at it that way because to win the superbowl you need to be consistent and win all season+playoffs. Its not like every team automatically makes it to superbowl sunday and gets a chance at the cup. Don't try and compare two completely different sports. Anyways heres yet another Gwin comment for you Pinkbike.

Its all about money when it comes down to it. Five Ten decided that it was worth them investing in employing a production company (MTBCut) to make a video series. Danny's youth meant he is very inspiring to the youth of today which, lets face it, are the ones most easily swayed by this kind of PR. Other companies can sponsor kit and it will help there business but Five Ten have gone the extra mile in this case and hopefully it will work out for them and people will buy their shoes. Don't forget the extra financial punch they have now they are owned by Adidas.

Danny won the Dh race with the least pedalling, in conditions that needed real skill, where pure skill came into it.
This weekend might see someone win a Dh race with an XC tyre on the back, just like PMB served up in 2011. There were no XC tyres, and boys who can pedal or ride a motorway in Champery 2011.
He was the one and only rider to hit the pro line on race day also.
Even in PMB last year which looks more bike park than Dh only a couple of riders hit the big jump at the bottom. (Hart and Gwin not in that couple). Lucky we had Cedric to one hander it :o)

I can't wait for world cup season to start.. let the results speak for themselves, its going to be an awesome year of racing!
  • 1 0
 yeah Big Grin
although everyone saying hart/gwin is the best isnt true its luck, passion and alot of training..
the teams dont get the serious credit they deserve for setting the bike up perfectly for each rider
also depends on the bike design aswell i mean in the dry i wonder how much of a gap there'd be between a session 9.9 and an 88 or between the glory and the 9.9 theres always going to be a difference so i wonder where the luck will be this season
  • 1 0
danny did not only win the world chamionship but he gained the lead over the 2nd with 11.699 sec!!
  • 2 3
yeahbro- I'd love to see where I was trying to remind people of Gwin or suggesting that people forgot about him... haha that's just rediculous. I don't get how you could take my post which was a question about how much coverage he's getting into hate about him, or some kind of weird jealousy of the coverage he's getting- which is not much more than what Gwin has got. But hey take that as you will, I don't care and like I said, I highly enjoy watching footage of Danny.
  • 3 0
hate to mention this many time..
Danny is rough, insane riding, he hold to the bar, he whips & he is hart. . . he is absolute fun to watch, not only Champery run, , remember Fort William , he insanely taking drop, mistake but he holds . . . Val d'sole, he was loose, hitting berms, but he still holds . . Hart is insane , he makes everybody shouting out loud in front of PC monitor!
  • 1 0
to be honest, at first i wasn't too keen on danny. just figured he was some young gun with shitty facial hair, part of the new "hip" crowd. but since then i've seen his grit and determination and through this you see the backing and support of his family. unlike the more "pruned and manicured" riders and ride teams out there, danny reps the peoples. he may be sponsored and supported there, but he didn't come loaded with the money to buy a new farm to train in ... ahem ... fly around the world to train in the best weather conditions. he rides where he is, for that he had a bigger gap to bridge in my opinion.

Well have to say got sh*t in the UK but dam do we produce real legends hey??
i mean look at the run we have compared to anywhere else they have huge bike parks and we still rule Smile
on another note danny boy i'm also upset dam dude you was better than me at 9 i'm 37 LOL

  • 7 0
What's nuts is how small he is relative to a lot of the best dh'ers out there. If you looks at guys like Pete, Atherton, and Gwinn they are all 6 plus foot; big strong dudes that can moose a big bike around.

Hart is finesse and pure raw bike handling talent at its best!

I bet his mum's not the only one with a tear in theri eye when they watch his run again. That is the greatest world championship win in any sport ever, he didn't just win; he blew them away and he did it with style, unbelievable Smile
  • 4 0
He got a whole lot of PR rep from the win at champery & for the 2 of you guys sayng that he shouldnt get the recognintion he gets because of one race,i think thats really weak ... its worlds ,hes world champ!what are you thinking ^KENNYkillsIT~...Anyways Go Danny! keep it comming youv been working on this for so long you deserve all the recognition you can get tup
  • 3 2
technically he is world champ. but its 1 race. come on. hes insanely fast and insanely talented. but lets face it. he got flat out beat all year. guys like gwin who have only been riding mountain bikes for 3 years and then completely wreck everybody where it really counts. and he got no recognition for what he did. he broke the record for most wins in a world cup season and hes the first american to win in a long time. us americans are proud of it and we get bashed all season because we say GWINNING. were stoked someone from our contry is ruling a european based sport. not taking anything away from danny,l hes one of my favorite riders, but theres a guy who did better all year who didnt get as much as he should have. bring on the neg props but you know im right

Hart 2011 WC results 1. Pietermaritzberg S.Africa (107th last) crashed (but did finish )
2. Fort William GBR ( 2nd ) 1.2 secs off the win
3. Leogang .Aut (10th) 10 seconds off the win
4. Mt. St Anne, Can (4th) 2.0 secs off the win
5. Windham NY , USA (3rd) 3.0 secs off the win
6. Labresse FRA (13th) 6.0 secs off the win
7. Val Di Sole ITA (2nd) 1.2 secs off the win
I would hardly say he got Flat out beat all year. out of 7 races, he podiumed 4 (3 times in the top 3) And solidly beat Gwinn in the Worlds. If anything, it's more fair to say Hart was the most consistent competition nipping at his heels all year. And like Gwinn, it was his first year in the UCI WC. No, it's not as impressive as Gwinns acomplishment. That's going to be a tough one to beat but Danny's coach was his father and Aaron has the legend John Tomac for a coach . Aaron lives in Temecula California and he has as it's mountain terrain as his training ground. Danny lives in the less mountainous GBR.
Don't get me wrong I'm very proud of Gwinn's accomplishments, and cheered like hell for him in Windham (and will this year) but Hart is going to be a force this year , along with Brosnan, and to say that Hart got beat solidly is a bit misleading. With Hart's back story it's also easy to route for him.
  • 1 0
 props bryantaber
  • 2 0
did you see him on the top step of the podium of the podium last season during the WCs? NO. so he flat out got beat. and its not like the DH trails we have out here in temecula are WC like. fontana, skids, sam hill, rainbow, and teds are anything but WC. yea he had his dad as his coach but hes riding a mtb since he was like 8. gwins been riding one for 3 years. prety new to the sport if you ask me. not saying danny wont be a force this year but i dont think he will dominate like everybody said he will. one race where gwin fell dosent prove it at all.

well im done making my point. well see how this pans out during the WC season
  • 1 0
I agree with you on how Gwinn seems to have a lot of people routing against him now. The excitement of his accomplishment is barely mentioned anymore. Since there seems to be a strong mix of US, Can, and Euro, users on PB, that it's normal for people to route for their regional favorites. They were alot of Americans rubbing people's nose in Gwinn's wins . If you Couple that with the natural tendency to route against the guy on top.....well, then the "hating" is gonna start. ( Believe me I'm a New England Patriots fan and go through this every football season) I routed for, and loved watching Steve Peat win, but was excited to see the young gun Sam Hill bump him off. I will say that I feel proud and lucky to have a seemingly humble guy in Gwinn represent the US as the 2011 WC champ.

Danny Hart: steezy whips since 1991
  • 1 0
He still got 4th overall at the end of the season, 2 second places in fort william and val di sole (correct me if im wrong there), thats an amazing season for a 19 year old, whatever way you look at it.
Gwin has got atleast 5 years on him in terms of fitness and overall stamina, so you cant compare them, and at worlds gwin was still 2 seconds down on him at the first split.

Also a big shout out to 5.10 for putting this together, its nice seeing something that isnt a straight up bit of PR from a company, just proper recognition of one of their riders.
  • 1 0
Way to go kid. Danny is one sick rider. I know of a young man named Collin Hudson here in Colorado who is already a 3x UCI BMX World Champion at age 15. You'll be hearing about him in the years to come. He's gearing up for the 2016 Olympic games. He's been training at the USA Olympic Facility in Chula Vista, CA. He'll be London this year for the 2012 UCI BMX World Championships to defend his title from 2011. It goes without saying that he's one hell of rider in BMX but he can also ride a DH bike nobody's business. IMO, one day he could be DH World Champion if he can stay focused and healthy.
  • 1 0
James earl Jones voice, - Danny Hart has the lungs of a champion and the heart of a rhino, he has the feet of an ostrich and the hands of a gopher. this has led him to pedalling blazes and gold medal glory. Next time on masterpiece theater we will discuss sam hills shoulder blades.
  • 1 0
Looks like a English Joe Dirt with that killer mullet, badass. Top rider so happy to see him win worlds, he had been ripping it up all season getting so close to the top spot on the box, then boom world champion even did a sick whip on his race run..
  • 1 0
Danny Hart is a champ and a beast on a bike, he seems like a really down-to-earth, humble kid as well. he deserves all the accolades but can we please shine more light on Gwin and the unprecedented season he had that deserves just as much, if not more, spotlight and respect. its a bit frustrating being american and a follower of Gwin as his accomplishments are practically thrown out the window when people talk about Hart being a world champion. Congrats to Gwin and Hart; lets hope more media and sponsors remember Gwin's season of domination
