64 Hours of Snow and Rain Pelt Pinkbike.com
Jan 9, 2009
The past week has been hell in the Lower Mainland. We have been through hip high snow, ice rink streets, and pelting rain. We have experienced it all, and for a small mountain based city that doesn't usually even accumulate snow during the winter season, this is a huge deal for us, and it's starting to pose a pretty big issue.
Read on to see the damages,
Read on to see the damages,
For those of you that don't know where Pinkbike.com is located, we're based in the Fraser Valley in the town of Chilliwack. We are located about a hour and a half East of Vancouver, and about 40 minutes out of the mountains. This winter has been crazy for us, not only for the amount of snow that we've received, but for the "hurt" mother nature is putting on us with this week's rain and warmer temperatures.
First off, Chilliwack got a dump of about 4 feet of snow prior to Christmas time. The last time we had a large snow fall was in 1996, and that consisted of about 4.5 feet of snow. Since then, Chilliwack has slowly been building up its protection from the Vedder River, by the use of dykes, however this recent snow and rain fall has put our dykes in peril. Are they actually high enough is the annual question and with all the rain and snow run off, no one is sure.
We now have roads that are inches under water, full road closures and sections of town unreachable. Our local riding spot is even being compromised. Parmenter Road, better known as the road to Vedder Mountain recently collapsed, creating a large hole on the road. What a crazy winter time!
Here's a small "humorous" write up explaining our predicament:
Chilled Vancouver commuters faced their second day of winter hell today, as an additional 2 centimeter of the peculiar white stuff fell, bringing the lower mainland to its knees and causing millions of dollars worth of damage to the marijuana crops. Scientists suspect that the substance is some form of frozen water particles and experts from Saskatchewan are being flown in. With temperatures dipping to the almost but not quite near zero mark, Vancouverites were warned to double insulate their lattes before venturing out.
Vancouver police recommended that people stay inside except for emergencies, such as running out of espresso or biscotti to see them through Vancouver's most terrible storm to date. The local Canadian Tire reported that they had completely sold out of fur-lined sandals.
Drivers were cautioned to put their convertible tops up, and several have been shocked to learn that their SUV's actually have four wheel drive, although most have no idea how to use it.
Weary commuters faced soggy sushi, and the threat of frozen breast implants. Although Dr. John Blatherwick, of the Coastal Health Authority reassured everyone that most breast implants were perfectly safe to 25 below, down-filled bras are flying off the shelves at Mountain Equipment Co-op.
"The government has to do something," snarled an angry Trevor Warburton. "I didn't pay $540,000 for my one bedroom condo so I could sit around and be treated like someone from Toronto."
The Rain has subsided, for now. Here are a couple up to date images of the view from the deck of Pinkbike. Our recent snow pack has depleted greatly due to the rain fall. The amount of snow you see here is usually what we would receive over the whole winter season, not a few the left overs of a few quick storms.
It's straight up crazy here. Hopefully we don't get flooded even worse but no guarantees. Let's all just be happy that Pinkbike.com is running off some server based out of sunny Texas.
Thanks boys!
Bring on the heat as I want to ride!

good read!!
In massachusetts, we just had a big icestorm, knocking over 2 million homes out of power. The local utility company, Unitil, should have been the ones fixing the power lines. But due to the fact they were ill-equipped to deal with the situation at hand, private ontractors had to be hired from as far away as Illinois. I was with-out power for 6 days. We were in a state of emergency, and the national guard landed at my sisters work in choppers, and were clearing roads with bull-dozers. I went out and helped the roads dept. with chainsaw in hand to help get rid of the massive amounts of shit in the roads. anything bought for "survival" is refundable by the government I recently found out. Should have bought a massive chainsaw and said it was for "clearing the property" but really just build trails with it. I jerry rigged the carto getpower so I could go on pinkbike while the power was out. You guys in chilliwack are lucky that the rain isn't freezing on trees and such, or you guys you be screwed. You should consider buying a generator for pinkbike headquarters!
Try Gloucestershire.
Its the same as that, except instead of the snow you just get rain for several weeks.

hahaha man, coastal bc is literally a rainforest. Don't worry, we know what rain is all about. Just not the fluffy white stuff.
Errrr actually yes. Most of the BC coast is often said to be a rainforest climate. Have you seen some of the videos of the northshore??
Yea, like jGell said it's literally a rainforest. But it's temperate, not tropical.

that's intense. especially what you went through, steeze. we had two gnarly floods over the summer. a guy i know went wakeboarding down the street behind a truck and we went kayaking in the park.
if i could trade all the rain in chiliwack for cowichan valley on vi i would because the god damn snow wont leave.
You'd trade away the cow valley dude? I mos-definitely do not agree. It's the most temperate place in Canada.
no man, i meant i want the rain to get rid of the snow. and its finaly starting to rain and hopefully finish it off. i agree its one of the most temperate places in canada but dont be fooled, its still canada and cow valley gets lots of realy shity weather its not much different then any place on the lower coast.
haha yeah dude I know, I'm from the valley. Far as Canada goes though, it's your best bet for comfortable weather.
are you kidding me thats nothing where i am its supposed to be -25 celcius this week and around 3 more ft of snow on top of the 3 ft we have already but its awesome and like revyrules said we go shred it up.
..Except for steezemaster thats just horrible
..Except for steezemaster thats just horrible
we escaped the rain and went to the interior for some snow was awesome people throw the bikes in the shed for the winter honestly.... use quads or snowmobiles way more fun
Over here in New Hampshire we just had a huge ice storm that left more than half the state without power and many didn't get it back until a week later. So I would be used to that kind of weather.
I liked the mock write up on your situation. It was pretty funny.

Good article, I loved all the snow, it was great, tons of snowboarding already this season with almost 120 hours over the 2week holiday alone. North Van and West Van haven't been AS badly hit with the melting snow, but we still hurt. The snow and ice caused lots of issues. I'de like to thank all the city plowers for keeping our roads safe, everyday i woke up in the morning and i knew i wasnt going to slip cuz you could see no ice or snow on the roads.

forecast is big bright sun starting next Tuesday for Chiliwack.
hang on guys , wont last for ever.
and all that you described is about what you can expect on a single winter day in Québec !...(yhea ok , petite exagération...!)
sucks to see the ridding spots get dammaged but , everything can be rebuild.
i rode an old hard tail on crips packed -15C celsius snow for an hour yesterday.
it's winter in Canada and it's always tough on bike addicts.

Its true, Quebec has a constant harshness when it comes to winter. Not a single break. We get a dumping every couple of weeks all winter.
im moving to Quebec man, or at least more northern ontario, i need my snow, gotta go sledding and shit, i couldnt live without my snocross and shit!
that's not to mention how low the temp gets there. i lived in Montreal for 6 years and wasn't surprised to see the temp at -25c. Your nose sticks together when you breath through it. And the wind.........
Does anybody remember the ice storm that Montreal had about 8 years ago.
Some people had no power for almost 3 MONTHS, woopdy do about 6 days. People were dieing and shit

i drive a lifted 4runner there was a section of road on our way to school that was passed my bumper and to even kick it off and make it funnier i got asked if i wanted to race by a guy in a row boat
yeah this is crazy, i live in greendale and a few houses just down the street from me people had to leave and there homes were just wrecked.
thankfully the my house didnt get flooded out!

crazy stuff, i lived in abbostford for 6 years and we got storms and a little snow but nothin like this.....hope pinkbike stays unflooded!
That scenario at the top is a reality in Portland. When it snows an inch everyone buys chains; the sale of chains is an industry staple. Doesn't matter to me on the coast - rarely snow, rainy 366 days a year.
an inch and everyone buys chains WTF??????????we arnt aloud to put chains on our cars, due to the fact that it "wrecks the roads", dumb ass law makers guess wat maybe they should make the ground freezing illegal too, cause guess wat????wen it thoughs it also wrecks the roads.........i hate dalton Mkdinky

We are also in the 20 degree celsius down here in Monterrey Mexico. Mad respect for you guys that have to put up with weather, and to think I get frustrated for one or two days of sub cero temperatures.
bois you should try living in wales rains most of the year then jst freezes flatout nd its super cold if your going out on a early morning ride
thus weather is absolute shit, i live about a 10 min bike ride from pinkbike, and its ridiculous my street had almost half a foot of water for a bit of time, why cant the sun just come out so i can go riding!
prety cold overhere, past 20 days we had two wormest days of 0°C (when it snowed), othervise is -5 to -16
finnaly i can play some hockey after all these unusualy warm years

I have no idea why I left Vancouver, Im in Ontario now and Im afraid the cold might eventually kill me in a fit of frigid rage. I could live with a massive down pour or 2, or even a little "west coast" snow, try having to be concious of the temperature of your testicles....now that's inconvenient. And Besides, Vancouver is one of the few places on earth where Adults can claim a snow day, I was there in '96 when the city got a foot of snow and had to shut down completely. Oh and did I mention you have better riding than we do! I hope you all survive.
in germany we have the coldest winter since 22 years. usually we have about 0 degrees celcius in january, but now we have like -15°!! It's just ridiculously cold.
Well you know the praries have -45 Celsius weather right now and it doesn't seem to be warming up from what I was told just the other night.
But the damage really does suck. That is quite a cocktail of weather all at once. Hope that everything is up and running smoothly soon.
Yea, in Edmonton it's been up and down between -20 and -40C since before Christmas. It warmed up to -2 this morning and it' feels tropical.
No doubt. What a bunch of sissy pansies in "Tha 604". Somebody call the Waaambulance. Forget Four-wheel-drive as an alien concept, wait until they dig around a little, find a male cord end under the hood and start bragging about secretly owning a hybrid. That's the block heater, kiddies. Now put that away before you hurt someone with it.
I think I'm done now. I know Radek and Brule(for starters) used to live in Calgary, so to hear any of this whining is even more deeply amusing.

Next thing you know people will be dying like they are in Europe because of 20cm's of snow and temps below -15.........I'm sure proud to be an Albertan!
the new denver and nelson area had a huge dump of witch caused slides on all alot of the roads out of the area. the roads are opening one by one but some where going to be closed for up to 4 weeks.
I suggest everyone watch this movie.

It demonstrates how floods and marsh lands are a positive thing.. and how destructive dikes can be.
