Byron Kopman and Carlo Wein from Alterna Films were nice enough to join Geoff and I for the filming of the project. They came out with all of their fancy camera gear including their RED epic camera for us to play with. I just want to say a huge thanks to those guys for everything and definitely check them out if your looking to rent a RED camera in the greater Vancouver area.
Carlo and I shooting the opening shot.
Setting up the super slow-motion coffee pouring shot.
Sorry ladies, he wasn't actually naked for this shot.
Have to agree, got very repetitive. A lot of the slow-mo could've been fast motion and would've been fine that way.
At the end of the day though, it was filmed in such a way for a reason.
Is is just me, or is their color/contrast piss poor? It seems that if you're shooting with a RED, you should be skilled enough to set the black point and contrast levels (unless they were going for flat color). The photo stills on this page have far better color and contrast versus the vid.
but the fact remains the video was posted on a riding website hence..... should have had mainly footage of gully riding and doing what we the viewers cannot do...not slow-mo shots of waking up and eating and buying limes for a family dinner! Coz im pretty most of us can do all that jazz pretty bloody well!
I checked out the Epic Red Camera and its 4000 for a week....I'm pretty sure you could buy a camera that's almost as good for that kind of money and film even more...but nice filming and riding to gully
BTW, Epic does 5K not 6K, but this looks like 2K or maybe 4K, down-ressed to 1080p HD. There's little to no benefit in shooting anything above HD (for now) and certainly not for online projects, unless you're testing workflows or need to pull out high-res stills. Epic's great, but my new FS700 is pretty awesome for slo-mo (usable up to 400fps), and it's more affordable, has a 35mm sensor, and is 4K-ready. And don't diss Twixtor too much...it's a powerful tool if you know how to use it. Nice vid though guys...
Shoot 5K, downscale to 2K. Almost 0 noise and aliasing too be seen, and the fact that you shoot RAW means that you can change everything (literally almost down to the camera angle itself... change the iso in post anyone?) in post means that it is a VERY powerful tool, if you have the know-how, ability, reason and budget too.
thats why you by a panasonic gh2 and and hack it so it films uncompressed video at like 6k or whatever, greasy big files and the camera gets nutty hot but hey, its $1500 with a sweet 14-145mm
oh wow. uh, no. The hack givves you a higher bitrate, (135mbp/s from memory) but not more resolution, it is still capped at 1080p.
Yes it is a good camera for less than $2000, but horses for courses my friend. I wouldn't want to shoot the next Spiderman on one, but it is a lot easier to move around in the bush for MTB stuff. All depends on your needs.
Higher bitrate doesn't necessarily equal better quality. It depends on the CODEC efficiency, so a bad CODEC recording at high bitrate can be as good as a good CODEC recording at low bitrates, though the GH2 hack is generally considered to be pretty decent. Equally important is bit depth, colour sampling, sensor size (and any interpolation), edit compatibility, etc. And like you say, ergonomics in the field is pretty important...depending on how big your crew is
Nice film guys, not sure you have added enough sharpness in the post, the raw files need a tweak. Dslr's do this automatically, I have to turn the sharpness down on this things. With a proper cine camera you need to crank it up a bit
love the idea of the using the red for super slow mo, but theres a point when its just overkill. 2 minutes til theres even riding, personally I just got bored.
