Don't think he the right man to test prototype Shimano saint brakes, he never uses them haha. one rapid dude, good to see someone setting a new benchmark. so fast
u mean cmon UCI MAKE all racers where helmet cams! It would bring viewing to the next level and make it a live feed so we can watch in real time spliced with other camera angles. That's next level stuff that would bring DH racing to everyone!
yeah cmon!! markeed totally agree with you! it will be crazy to see some live stuff with the riders' point of view in the world champs... and it's awesome how smooth aaron looks...!! nevertheless, really funny to see all the people crossing near aaron like "look, another rider" and not, "LOOK!! AARON GWIN!!"
live feed helmet cams would be the best thing ever. that coverage was shocking looking back at it, the helmet cam shows the other 90% of the track we missed!!!
I really dont want downhill to grow to much it would really take the community feel out of it and drive the big business like nike to it just make money off it. I ride to get away and chill with friends, i dont want to be it to become like football.
The worlds fastest dude on the planet coming down one of the gnarliest tracks in the world. Seriously, I have a new found respect for Aaron Gwin. He is simply 'On It'.
It might be my imagination but he seems to always take the smoothest and crucially shortest line every single time. Gwin seems to stick to the inside of every turn to shorten every corner yet still not have to slow down by taking a tighter turn- awesome!
I'd love to see the comments of the other WC racers watching this to know how they think their runs differ....
Eh... He clearly doesn't take the shortest line every time. Watch it a few times. In many cases he takes lines that look rougher/longer, but would allow his bike to float over things but put him in a good position to carry momentum and speed better through turns.
Overall he has great line choice. Which is what helps him create the gaps he does. But if you look at splits, he certainly lags in areas compared to other riders. He's not invincible, but he's found the best overall strategy that works for him. I mean, if I had to say it, he probably has a great ability to look at the track and really see a way to carry consistent speed, whereas it seems other riders lag heavily in certain areas but excel in others. And that's very noticeable comparing splits amongst the other riders.
Then again, I'm no professional. I'm just a shmuck making assumptions based on what I see. I'm probably full of shit.
Haha. Someone, it seems, was so offended by what I had said they decided to message me and inform me that my mother and sisters are all whores.
Stay classy guys. Or rather I should say, stay classy brett.
Thing is your right. In a video on here it was asking 'How is Aron Gwin so fast'. He says that he finds little bit of times in certain areas. This looks like how he does it.
cyrix says some wise things. Here's how another non-professional (me) sees it. Gwin sees lines differently, more like a chess player. A line that seems shortest, quickest or smoothest through a given section or turn might be a bad setup for something below that section or turn, which would be a bad setup for something below that. Connecting things for a smoother overall line, rather than imagining it's about tricky spots and focusing on tricky spots. The whole track is a tricky spot, in other words. Might not be as thrilling to watch, if you're watching to see people super-loose and just this side of exploding. I find it exciting watching someone make a track look simple when it's not simple at all.
This is a sign of his moto background. In motocross they always look for fastest line, on every corner. Also Aaron said in an interview that he was best at sections of motocross that weren't filled with riders, and he always felt that he would do well in a timed version of moto (which would be very similar to DH). Correct me if I'm wrong, because I really don't know much about dh.
Beardless you must also remember that the camera is mounted on his head so when he leans into the corner, the view of he camera will always be near the most inside line. It does not mean he is riding over the dirt just below his helmet through every turn though.
Hang on a minute.... this video shows Gwin travelling down the track in 4:46 seconds in practice?!?! his winning time was 4:48............. Have we just seen someone ride faster in practice than in their actual race run and take the lead??
That made me literally go for a shit. I'm writing this right on my phone taking a shit. Head cams never give it justice but that still look super fast.
HI I just did a run, My name is Aron what is yours, I think I wil just ride through ,,mmmm,, not one noticed me.. cool. they will later....This guy is a machine, ubber fast and has style for miles ....Still waiting for Hill to take one. Gee needs one to. CG get better.
world champs in champery he crashed, probs would have won if he stayed on. maybe. and he crashed in fort bill quali but won in finals. he has mad skilzz.
@jumpingman: He crashed in val di sole in 2010 just after the road gap when he used to ride for Yeti, and at Fort Bill in 2011, but wasn't on camera. He is still human, just a human that is also scary fast at riding a bike. Gwin makes mistakes like everyone else, he's just better at finding lines that keep him going the quickest.
"in the zone" that is a good call. For the briefest moment I almost knew what it felt like to go that fast. Then I realized I was sitting in front of a computer. Some of those segments really draw you in.
Lord almighty! Gwin is the Master52 of Downhill (only a select few of you will get that reference). My favorite part of the race was at the end everyone clapping slowly on the podium in silence as if saying "Well eff this..."
But would you push more on a head cam run in practice, or you actual qualy run? I would say your qualifying run, especially if your an adopted atherton.
I'm not saying that this helmet cam was Gwin pushing it to the max, I'm just saying that everyone is impressed with the helmet cam run and that same run was still 6 sec slower than Marcs quali run.. Now imagine if we had a helmet cam of Marcs run .
You can actually hear the Doppler shift in the cow bells pitch as he blasts past. Someone should work out how fast he is going using the change in pitch...
dude i finally figured out why Aaron Gwin is so fast!... his machanic! hes fuckin awesome hahaha if u want to win races u need a mechanic like this guy!
I thought it would have looked alot faster...for some reason it looked kinda slow to me. Especially around the turns and through some of the rocky sections.
