 Thanks! There wasn't more Kenny Smith because we filmed everything at the peak of Whistler in fall 2012. Unfortunately due to timeline, injuries and a full production schedule in the spring, we werent able to collect more. It's tough when there is so much to build, film and coordinate while keeping consitency throughout segments. We are all running Specialized apparel, and the shorts you see will be available early 2014.

 How did the coastal gravity park opportunity come around? It's number 1 on my list of places to visit! I loved the film so much, I could tell how much work has gone into the filming and editing, it flowed from section to section so well! Also the trails you built are dream trails, so rad!  The opportunity came around just over a year ago. Some like minded friends/business owners from the Sunshine Coast came to us with the potential property, and the vision. We knew it would be one of the best things we could do for Sechelt and the entire Sunshine Coast. With a dwindling economy and next to nothing to do here for kids and young people we saw it as a no brainer. Provide jobs, bring people to the coast and most of all build the best trails possible! The support from our fans over the years has been unreal. We just want to give back as much as possible and try to do something bigger than just making videos. The trails are looking amazing, we have tons of work to do still but we cant wait to get everyone up there and on their bikes!

 You're welcome for the film! We each do our own decal jobs on our bikes and helmets. Specialized allows us to be creative and have fun with them, and its great!

Brandon is working on a major film project of his own which he is putting a lot of effort into as a big focus.  how long (on average) does it take you to build a trail from walking around planning it out to riding it? Loved arrival btw!

 Thanks! It can take a few weeks on average. It really depends on length of trail and terrain/ dirt we're working with.

 I can imagine there is already a ridiculous number of hours put into every film you produce, but is there any chance of a future film being closer to the one hour mark... they are simply to stoke worthy to end between 30-40 minutes.

 As The Coastal Crew we simply have too much to do! Just like you say there are countless hours put into a movie like this and its a very consuming process especially for just 3 guys. We are professional riders with a lot of other obligations that are hard to juggle, but in the end we get to do what we love! We love the length of Arrival, short and sweet. To answer your question the bottom line is to make it longer we have to dedicate more time, which we don't have!

 At the end of the day, you get to watch the video online for free, and then decide if you're willing to pony up a whopping $12.99 for it... I'd say that is whopping good value for a 30 minute film!! Better then back in the day when a VHS was like $40, had awful everything in it, and was still barely 40 minutes long! Good work boys, always my faves, own 'em all.

 What would you guys recommend to someone wanting to do videos? and what kind of camera to start with, a DSLR or a Video camera ?

 The first thing you have to ask is do you want auto focus? If its not really important then go DSLR. The quality of video you get for the cost is pretty unreal, small compact and very versatile. We started with a Canon 7D and a 50mm lens. It has filmed everything from our first web video all the way to the tree falling shot in Arrival. We were able to get where we are today with that one camera. After investing in a few lenses and learning the basics the sky is the limits. If your ready to make the jump down the road, your Canon lenses can be adapted to almost any high end camera e.g. Sony fs700, RED, Panasonic Af100 etc.

 The higher end cameras have auto focus just as the 7D even had auto focus while filming but it's 100% worthless. I have an af100 and fs700 - both have decent autofocus however, nobody really uses it. It's always better to use manual focus when setting up your shots just to guarantee you get the shot.

 Hi, there is allot of jabber about this movie not having a theme.. one could say the whistler seggy was the basis of the movie.The music seemed to lead up to that moment and then set the tone for the rest.. Was that your plan? also i would like to say i do like the strait up action approach i can understand why the fans want more.. Thnx for making things happen in the mtb world..

 Thanks! It's tough to put a theme into action sports movies when its really all about riding. The films theme was pretty much to showcase a group of talented young riders who were given an opportunity to put their skills to work. We just wanted to make a bike movie that gets people stoked to ride and not worry about a storyline.

 I'm an enthusiastic trail builder and have been greatly inspired by the work you guys have done on the new Coastal Gravity Park, could I ask, where did the inspiration come from for the boat kicker? Definitely one of the coolest features I've seen.

 The inspiration came when we saw the boat sitting in an empty lot and someone throwing the idea out that we should put a kicker on the roof and air over it. Stoked you like it!!

 Hi guys, a shout out from Greece, great movie! Watching Arrival but also other movies shot in Canada, I notice fallen trees around the trails. I was just wondering how easy/difficult the permitting process is in Canada, to build a trail etc. One of the most important aspects if you wish to build a trail that will last and not get destroyed by authorities or whatever! Many thanks and keep up the good work, the world is watching!!!

 Thanks!! Canada is great because there is a lot of opportunity to go into the woods to create trails. A lot of the time permission is given through private land owners, or partnerships/ agreements with forestry. There is always a ton of dead fall logs in the forest, and it works great to utilize that wood in trail building.

 Every piece of trail is different, sometimes it takes months, sometimes more than a year until our tires touch the dirt for the first time. - chainsaw - mini sledge hammer - axe - spikes - digging spades - tape measure - splitting wedges Roughly sums up the list to build the wooden features. Then hope it all works out!

 All of our camera gear is owned by us. Most of it is ordered and purchased through camera stores just the same as anyone else. You can be like us! Just do what you love!

 There are many challenges with traveling, but its never out of the question. Because we like to build and create new and original lines to shoot, it means putting the time, effort and work in - with traveling that means you have to take a lot of factors into a account, and a lot of time and money.  We all work together on the music choices. A lot of the time its determined by how well the song flows with the footage and the feel of the segment.

 How do you choose music for segmets? Is it your personal preference or is it more like "what suits better"? Is there a chance we're going to see a movie with similar music to NWD from you ? Great movie regardless ! Cheers

 Its a bit of both, but most of all its what in our opinion fits it best. While NWD has some awesome music, our style is so different. We know a of people may not be the biggest fan of certain songs we use but we simply cant please everyone. That being said we would be super stoked to have people give us some music they would like to see in a film or video! We love all types of music, and its hard to find good music. If its got the right feel its perfect, regardless of the genre.

 So cool to hear this! i've been playing music my whole life and have been getting into recording & mixing music with my portable rig. We are The Rogue Scholars and annually for 5 yrs now we get together (in bc) and focus on hanging/catching up, and tracking tunes. We handle every step of it (except mastering) and own all the material. 2 more singles (have 7 currently) to be released in the next month & have a backlog of tunes coming. Love your guys' approach to life with the bikes and filming. Bought the 2-day pass at your park. Arrival is Super inspiring. If ever you need a tune from us, it's yours.  First of all congratulations that was a great film. How posible is it that if some friends and I go to sunshine coast are able to help building trails and ride with you, a trip with the locals of every place are always great, you get to know more of the lifestyle in other places. or Are you going to do like camp of champions in whistler so we mortals can ride with you guys that´ll be great.

 Something like that is quite possible. It all depends when you travel and if you are here when we are here. Our year is quite busy and its always hard to plan when we will actually be home. Summer Gravity Camp in Whistler is always a great opportunity to get to ride with us during the summer!

 Hey coastal crew! I gotta ask you this after watching Arrival(which was outstanding by the way), what camera were you using to get those chest cam shots? I thought it couldn't have been a go pro because it is just so HD. Lastly, what editing software do you guys use? Thanks, Hugh

 Hahah good eye. We use a customized bag which holds our 5DMkIII on the chest of the rider. It sounds cumbersome but its really really easy to ride with. We run a 15mm fish eye or 16mm wide angle lens depending on the look we want. Eg. in Arrival the Whistler seggy is shot a 16mm wide and but every other POV shot is done with a 15mm fish. We did this because the 16mm shows a more natural look where as the 15mm fish shows the action more accurately and most of all provides a wider field of view. For editing Arrival we used Final Cut. Since then we have switched to Adobe Premier Pro. You can't go wrong with either platform.

 The most difficult shoot was Brazil. It was really hard to adapt to the temperatures and conditions. We had a few set backs during the trip which we had to overcome as well. It wasn't easy

 How old were you guys when you first started mountain biking and filming?

 roughly between 12-14 when we started bringing a camera on rides we went on and when we got home after we could watch all the moments that made us laugh or get us stoked to go back out and ride. It hasn't really changed too much since, natural progression took over!

 Coast Gravity Park will definitely be a continuous focus of ours, being able to design and create our vision is something we have always loved to do. Definitely expect to see a good dosage of Coastal crew content throughout next year! Always keeping the wheels in motion with the Crew.

 Which song was the one which caused the delay of a couple weeks, and is it still on the project as of now?

 The song we had in place for the first Brazil segment is the song that ended up not being possible to license. The song was Desperate Youth by Santigold. It was unfortnate that we weren't able to license the song, because everything was clear until the last minute. It came down to Santigolds choice not to have her music used in action sports films anymore, and we can respect that choice.

1st for Dylan. As a budding videographer I'd like to know the programs you use to edit your stuff?
2nd for all yall is did you always ride FR/DH or did you start somewhere else? I ask because I have a hard time deciding what style to ride I mean I love them all and I want to do FR/DH but living on small town Ontario that really isn't in my cards. I guess it's what style did you start with and what-apart from general riding-helped shape your skills? Thanks for your time and i can't wait to watch Arrival, stoked!!

 For Arrival we used Final Cut to edit.

If I was you I would try to take a step back and not worry about the "style" of riding you want to get into. Just get a sweet all mountain bike and go find some trails and learn what you love to ride the most. You can express self how ever you want thats the beauty of mountain biking, don't bound your self to a certain style. If your riding and having fun thats all that matters. Thats where it started for all of us. Just riding trails with your friends and having fun is the best place to start.

 At what point in your lives did you decide to chase the dream lifestyle you guys live? Rather than getting a job for financial security and riding/filming in your spare time? I'm just real interested in how you made that decision, as for me its almost fantasy and in my life making that decision to go for it and chase your lifestyle would take some and would be something of a risk!  do you guys ever consider coming to ride the east coast of canada? because quebec has some great riding that doesn't really get showcased in films

 It's in consideration because theres a lot of great riding over there. It would be great to visit the maritime provinces but we have no definite plans at this point.

 The matitimes do have some good trails, not a whole lot for free ride though. Only two real downhill bike parks, but lots of incredible private trails throughout the provinces, especially near Moncton NB and Kentville NS. Come visit us sometime!

 I'm very uncomfortable in the air.. I feel like I get overly concerned with being on axis, not leaning too far forward or back...any tips? Open for lessons?

 I love the inclusion of the cameras themselves in the film... but was this a conscious decision made early on or did you decide to do this because of the freedom it gave you? Not having to worry about getting in each other's shots must have been nice. The shot looking at the screen of the main camera on the cable rig was one of my personal favourites... such a cool idea. Oh yeah, you guys NAILED it.

 Thanks! We did plan to allow of certain shots to give the viewer a different perspective and show a bit more of what is happening behind the scenes.

 It defo helped to show your relationship with MTB both as filmers and riders. It was also good to see the results you can achieve with equipment at a reasonable cost. Mind you, I've just looked at how much that 70-200 costs. Holy shit! Thanks for making my night, not every day you get to talk to the people behind such an awesome creation. I hope you're all happy with the response it has had.

 What was the deal with the static issues on the playback? I couldn't get it to work and I was pretty disappointed to not get to see the rest of the film. I loved it so far, i just wanted the rest! haha

 Hey Kyle, you were a legend in PG growing up, I remember you even as a kid in John Mcginnis Junior High. Is there anything you would like to see different in terms of organization/trail building in PG? What got you in gear to move down south and become more know in the scene?

 Haha that is awesome! I don't think I would be where I am today without having started in PG and getting to ride with all the local guys I grew up around who would take me on the trails. I want to see the riding scene in PG stay strong in all the spots I grew up riding, like Pidherny, Cranbrook and the University trails. I loved when Tabor was open too. I know theres a lot of great people there keeping the scene going and I don't think that will ever change.  How close is the Coastal Gravity Park to the water? I'm in Nanaimo and wondering what it's going to cost me to buy a boat, mount a bike rack to it and get my butt over there on a regular basis. That's, of course, assuming that I could get my bike from the water to the park... Thanks. Smile

 The Park is only about 1km from down town Sechelt which is boat accessible. Another great option for anyone on the island or flying to YVR first is to take a float plane. There are 2 float plane business near the base of the park, you could be there in 20 minutes.

 They were using the Sony FS700, and I saw the Canon 70-200 so I imagine they were using the Metabones Speedbooster as well. There was a jib shot with a Canon 5D(don't remember if it was MkII or MkIII), and they probably used other Canon L glass for the rest of it. Hope that helps!

 i loved the online premier yesterday other that the glitch at the end of the whistler segment and the rest of the way throught the movie, still a great film. good job on that!  Great film, I use a FS700 at work. What were some of the limitations or frustrations you had using the FS700? Like how did you do an End Trigger on the cable cam for super slow mo? Thanks for doing this AMA!

 Not too many complaints at all. The end trigger is a very strong tool for action sports. One stand out flaw is the screen. It sucks, especially once you put the eye piece over it, its flops around pretty easy. That being said it was still quite easy to expose and shoot a sharp image. They are amazing cameras and awesome bang for your buck. I dont feel the need to upgrade any time soon. Cable cam was pretty easy, the run needed to take a little less time than the buffer allows. With an operator at the top running the cable and another at the end hitting end trigger. Worked perfect! -Dylan

 We build trails by using the terrain the best we can. It just takes time and effort to make the trails ride how you want them to. Just get a shovel in the dirt, build some turns, and ride them! The more you do it the more you will learn what works best. Have fun!

 We are so lucky because every camera operation is a close friend of ours. Its almost like no one is filming you at all, we are so comfortable working together. We don't roll full time but enough to get a true look at whats going on.

 We are all pretty used to being filmed and having cameras rolling. Nic Genovese helped us out huge this year and kept the cameras rolling through out each days work. Often you forget theres even cameras filming you, and that creates the best content because everything is natural.

 I wonder that (probably you used the high speed cameras for slow motion) is this possible converting a 30 fps video to 120 fps(or more) without loss of quality( I mean significant loss) ? whic software/plug-in you are using for that? and how can you set up the cable-camera thing and isn't that hard to follow the rider ?  You guys all killed it in arrival mad props. I noticed in one of the earlier questions you (norbs) mentioned you guys met in the MTB operations program at Capilano University. I currently attend the University of Colorado and the MTB scene seems to be growing a lot. I am curious if I were to propose to the University of Colorado to get a MTB operations program and get the ball rolling if I could get input from you guys on what you guys learned that made you so successful and if you guys would be willing to help me start the program in order to expand the sport?

 Local trail organizations or local MTB community leaders do a great job in organizing volunteer trail building days on their trails. We stand behind that 100% and contribute as much as we can to our local trails. Doing so on a bigger scale is tough at this point because our current work load is so heavy. Maybe its something for the future though!

 Hey guys, love the preview. As stated by others, I really look up to you guys and how you are progressing the sport. I'm in Memphis, TN and there is not really much to ride, nor do I even have a bike at the moment. I've always wanted a dual suspension bike after riding a Specialized big hit and also trashing my Hardrock when I was younger. What words of wisdom do you have for someone who dreams of riding downhill and perfectly sculpted jumps everyday, yet has no money, no bike, and no place to ride? Also what were you guys riding before trek and specialized handed you the best of the best equipment. This sport isn't cheap, especially for a poor college student. I'm at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi when i'm not in memphis, where there is also nothing to ride.

 I've been following yous guys since I took up mtb'n two years ago. I was late getting into the sport, only started when I was 22. Your vids on the net have inspired me to think about moving to Canada. I'm not getting any younger so I thought let's head to the place where my game can be tested everyday and hopefully someday be able to come back home and shred the trails with ease.  We've ridden bikes our whole lives. The past 6 − 7 years we have slowly become recognized and moved into the position of being professionals on our bikes and as film makers and trail builders. It didnt happen all at once.

 It's autumn time over here, shitty weather, cold,... so watching the movie yesterday made me want summer so bad! The big bike hasn't been out since august but tomorrow it will get some proper shredding. You guys take so many different angles and positions to shoot riding to make it even more spectacular. Do you decide what angles and positions to shoot on the spot or do you prepare them long time in advance?

 Thanks! Hopefully your ride will be good! We decide on angles once we are actually in the location for every shoot. You don't really know what something will look like until you set up and view the shot through the camera.

 Movie was sweet but Brazil section seemed to be lacking. Why would you send a world cup racer to hit some sketchy drops and ride some mediocre trails padless (first part of section, once bernardo was in the mix it was cool) and not just film him here in B.C. riding fast in his element? IMO the part with bernardo was cool and seeing them shred together was neat, but stevies solo part at the beginning of the brazil segment didn't really show his riding how it could have.

 They obviously were taking a chance to go to Brazil. As they said above, it was their hardest shoot because of the humidity and heat. We aren't going to progress unless we take some chances right?

 We took a big chance by going down to Brazil. As noted, there were a lot of set backs during the trip. We all did our best while we were down there and we are really happy with how the segments turned out. We did research the trails and locations before hand, but you never actually know what you'll get until you set foot in a new location. Stevie absolutely killed it for us down there.

 The bikes we rode in the film are custom one off color ways that we do our selves, its fun for us to come up with an idea and having Specialized allow us to have fun with our vision which makes for a bike that no one else has. Sorry but these 3 bikes are one off Coastal crew wrapped.

 The slo mo footage is spectacular! Do you use thr red camera for slo mo? how many frames per second to get that crisp detailed slo mo effect.

 The movie is shot on a 5DMkIII and the SonyFS700. All slo mo was shot at 120 or 240 fps on the FS700. No Red cameras, they are excessive and very overkill in my opinion. -Dylan

Perhaps one day SLR,s will have 120/240 frames per sec. settings.

 The FS700 is a crop sensor but the Metabones speedbooster makes it a full frame camera and also gives you another stop of light. Your f/2.8 lens is all of a sudden a f/2.0 and full frame!

 I looked up the Sony FS700 14 stops of latitude. Proprietary Cmos chip built for shooting vid. (Sony is one of the only manafactures of sensors)
240 frames at full HD.
Cost about one quarter the cost of a Red camera.
Something new to lust over...........
My Canon point n shoot does 120/240 frames per sec. At 640 by 480 lol.
Mind you is shoots full HD at 60 frames per sec.
You might say my vids are a bit cruder than your outstanding effort.

 First of all, I've been a huge fan from your day 1 (that would be the part from kranked 7 if i remember corectly,) then coastal crew series and now full time films + bikeparks + all the stuff you do! But nothing can compe to level of excitement the Kranked 8 brought with another amazing trail + unforgetable X marks the spot stunt! So I went out and rebuild one of our old trails so it would fit coastal crew style...
Question is, did I succeed (lets imagine scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is gravel road and 10 is Arrival material)?  When you guys first started out as the crew how did you or what did you do to get your name out there? Did you guys have connections or like call around for support? Just curious what really kicked it off,

 When you shoot with another rider (not in the costal crew), is it like the movie industry where they get paid a certain amount for their time? Or does it depend more on your personal relationship with the rider? What about traveling expenses? I would think sponsors would account for some of that...

 No we don't pay the riders. As a rider its you job to get exposure in movie and photos or win events. That hows you you make a living. We choose to work with people that work hard and deserve the exposure. We have a platform to help riders grow, get exposure and in the end make a living. We try our best to make that happen for our friends and fellow riders. Usually the riders help us by getting support from their sponsors to make certain trips or shoots happen. Its a collective effort between the riders and the filmers. We are kind of one in the same, its all part of the movie making process.

 How much time is invested into each minute of a movie like Arrival? From planning a line, to grooming a trail, riding it over and over to get all the angles, then editing it into a cohesive scene seems like each little clip would take forever.

 I'm working in Israel as a tv director 24/7 doing mainly prime time series's (mostly shi....) on my spare time beside my own family I ride bikes for the last 14 years...never shot a frame in my life!!.....
How do you do it? What a about the question of money ?when you get into production do you raise money from your Sponcers ? Can you tell how much time and money cost to make a film
I have full acsees to all the shooting gear that I want but I really don't know how to start and it seams so difficult ....

 Looking at your pics it seems you ride really well. So you have the riding element sorted out and you have acess to the equipment.I bet you're gona have at least a couple of friends that ride as good as you so you have a small "crew" to ride with. You could start doing short edits showcasing how you and your friends and see how it progresses. You could get a couple of friends to operate the cameras as you ride. Since youa re already a director you can use it to your advantage and make small themed edits that tell a story of some sorts.

I understand it's dificult starting to film somewhere where mountain biking isn't as widespread as Canada. I guess the situation in Israel is similar to Greece where I live where not many people ride and mountain biking is not well known. Nevertheless I've seen nice dits done by small groups of friends here in Greece and I guess you could do the same. I guess it all comes to starting out small. If you try to make a film like the ones made by the Coastal Crew on your first try it wil be overwhelming and you'll probably fail. Start slow and enjoy what you do.  I understand the dileme between riding and filming and it must be evn more difficult since making film is something you do mots of the day in your work. Still I think it would be awesome to showcase the riding scene in Israel. I wasn't aware there is such a big scene with so many riders. Would you have any advice on how to get involved specifically in extreme sports videography and maybe some suggested courses for that and bike park trail building/maintenance.  Firstly awesome film. Secondly how do you guys get the confidence to hit some of the bigger stuff and make it look so effortless? do you worry about what could go wrong at all?

 Every new build has to be tested for the first time and there's always a chance it could go wrong. Trial and error is something we have always gone with, enough experience and time on your bike always makes for a better execution. Work your way up, and if you want something bad enough, dig deep and know your limits. You know what they say, "if it feels good do it". The same thing applies when testing something bigger than you're used to.

 What is the most interesting thing that has happened to you during a film shoot?

 Probably the worst thing that we can talk about would be Matty Miles accident at Retallak when we were out in the middle of know where. A rider that had passed us on there way up while we were shooting ended up riding right into the line of jumps 5 minutes later that Matty was riding. Being a few hundred feet down the trail out of site, this rider ends up hiking her bike up the middle of the landing of the first jump after they hear Matty yell "dropping innnn". A head on collision mid air at very high speed could have ended up much worse than his dislocated elbow, broken hand and severed tendon on his index finger with 2 surgeries, so happy he was able to walk away from that one. Matty is back 6+ months later riding like a boss! Note to every rider out there, walking up trails can result in very bad injuries ( stating the obvious ) but I never want to see that happen again.

 The motivation comes from the satifaction you get when you build a line that you're able to ride, whether its a piece of trail or a progressive move. We put a lot of effort and detail into the trails we build because we want to be proud of the work we do.

 In High school we were offered photography as an elective class. Learning how to shoot still images on an old film camera using manual lenses at an early age helped understand the basics. Then its figuring out how to bring your vision to its end result, using Sony fs700 we have high speed possibilities to show all the moments we really enjoy seeing when watching someone ride.

 Our park is so close to the ocean that we hardly get any snow at all. Depending on the weather in any given winter we may not get any snow at all. So if we do get snow it is very minimal and should be easy to broom off the trails. Ice is more of an issue and we will take it as it comes. Park and trail closures will be very minimal during the winter!

 Hey just to tell you guys, your the whole reason I got into mountain biking. Here in Indiana, mountain biking is basically nonexistent in terms of downhill and freeride. I stumbled across your segment in Kranked 8 back in 2011 and I have been mountain biking since.

This question is for Curtis, How much did the crash you took in From the Inside Out slow your riding down? I know some people talk about air sickness after a bad crash and I was just curious if it that big of a crash messed with you any. It doesnt seem to be seeing how gnarly your segment in Arrival is. Your one of my favorite riders dude. Also is there any chance of more webisodes later on like you did in the past? Amazing movie guys, Coastal Crew never disappoints!
