Big Mountain Enduro 1: Angel Fire/Taos

Jun 20, 2013
by Big Mountain Enduro
BME #1, Angel Fire/Taos shuttled racers into the backcountry and up the longest lift in the U.S. for two days, five stages, and countless rock gardens at Angel Fire Bike Park, throwing every kind of riding at racers. A true test of all-around skill and all-day riding ability set the true Enduro racers a part from those who just showed up for the ride.

Ross Schnell (Trek) and Kelli Emmet (Giant) took a commanding lead from Stage 1 on the South Boundary Trail putting several seconds into their competitors. Day 2 of BME #1, Angel Fire/Taos kept racers of the edge of their seats with near-instantaneous results popping up after every stage. Some say it came down to tire selection and keeping it upright for the weekend, but everyone knows it came down to who wanted it the most.

Balancing speed, technical prowess and fitness is the name of the game for excelling in the world of enduro racing. The stages ranged from pedal-heavy fast singletrack to bonafide downhill course, challenging riders gear and skills.

Nate Hills riding for SRAM Mavic and Yeti is no stranger to the Enduro circuit and came in fifth for the weekend. Expect to see Hills at all of the BME s this season

Nate Hills (SRAM/Mavic/Yeti) is no stranger to the enduro circuit and exemplifies enduro racing with a background in both pro downhill and cross country racing. Expect to see Hills at all Big Mountain Enduro events and North American Enduro Tour stops.

Riders enjoyed getting air throughout the weekend. Day 2 is where the gravity folk made up some ground.

Irmiger s smile says it all on how she feels about her recent transition into enduro racing.

Heather Irmiger's smile says it all... when she talks about transitioning into enduro racing, the real mountain biker inside comes to life. Irmiger has an accomplished background in racing World Cup cross country for many years, and is finally enjoying the finer points of mountain biking racing enduros this season.

Stage 2 for the weekend started at the top of the Chile Pepper Express. Riders has a fast sprint into the first corner of Ziggy before their 10 minute descent.

Stage 2 shot riders straight out of the gate at the top of the Chile Pepper Express. A short sprint into Ziggy followed by 10 minutes of holding on for dear life.

I didn't even know this was going down. Pinkbike needs to have an events calendar on their site so we can know ahead of time and show up to these events. Can't be that hard to program.

 I second the events calendar.

Have the calender be a part of the profile. Sort event by region, display regional events on dashboard.

decline has something like this on their site.. looked at it a couple of months ago, give it a shot! (not entirely sure if its all dh or if other types of riding are in there too.)

with that said, it still would be a great idea to have a calender with ALL the events (XC, 'enduro', gravity games, world cups, other races like sea utter, etc etc), even if xc is boring Wink

aye. Just a little tab on the homepage and you hit it and a full calendar of events big and small come up! woohoo

I have made that suggestion several times but have never seen nor heard of any such developments. It would be the best addition/improvement to the site possible. Similar to the USA cycling calendar but with both grassroot and sanctioned events listed.. With the possibility of either event organisers or those in the know to update/create events. Come on pb, let's create the most comprehensive racing database there is.

 EVENTS CALENDAR......YES PLEASE!

Bam!
Don't think this event was on there but this calender is pretty good. You can't check the boxes and narrow down the events to region and some other categories too.

Yeah a tab on the main page with an events calendar would be sweet.

I got a clip! #25 jumping the tabletop at :40. Congrats to the fast guys, I got 15th. DHest enduro courses you'll ever see. Fast, rocky, very little climbing. I chose my DH bike over my enduro bike to avoid flats and crashes.

I think on Vital they were talking about you. They said one of the guys showed up in a full DH bike and killed it. Grats.

A lot of these races fill up quickly so around March you gotta start making your summer plans and then get on their websites right when registration opens. I just buckle down and spend an evening researching and planning out my summer race schedule.
