Bell Helmets Announces this Year's 'Bell Built' Winners - Vows to Bring Back the Contest for 2014

Dec 19, 2013
by Richard Cunningham

After a successful first year, Bell Helmets and IMBA proudly announce they will be back again in 2014, providing trail assistance for mountain bike projects across the USA. The success in the first year was remarkable — 2013 Bell Built Grant winners all put in a tremendous effort to turn their visions into publicly accessible, legal trails for the entire mountain biking community to enjoy.

And, the 2013 Bell Built Winners Are:

Pump track/bike park – Eric Routt, County Riders, Steamboat Springs, CO

bigquotesBeing chosen out of hundreds of applicants, and to be given the opportunity to build a trail for the mountain bike community in my hometown is an unreal feeling, It's been especially rewarding to see the entire community go into a frenzy of excitement about this trail. Huge thanks to Bell Helmets and IMBA for providing us the chance to make a difference. - Aaron Rogers, President/Trails Coordinator of Copper Harbor Trails Club

Bell's Plans for 2014

In 2014, the Bell Built program is looking to build upon its 2013 success, and hopes to receive even more interest from different mountain biking communities. Like last year, the 2014 program will consist of $100,000 in grants to fund three mountain bike trail projects that create places for a broad spectrum of mountain bikers — which includes any combination of bike park/pump track, flow trails and/or downhill/gravity trails.

bigquotesIt's unbelievable to see how much impact a program like this has throughout a community, and, just as important, mountain biking as a whole. Being able to watch riders use these new trails, and to see the positive impacts they have had for local communities, is why we did this. It's awesome. - Azul Couzens, Bell Helmets Director of Marketing

Bell Helmets and IMBA received over a hundred grant submissions last year from IMBA chapters, clubs and land management agencies, and it is expected that the number of applications will increase in 2014. IMBA Trail Solutions, the international leader in developing singletrack trails, was responsible for the building and designing of all three trail projects and will continue this in 2014 with help from local volunteers.

bigquotesThe Bell Built program far exceeded our expectations and we're extremely proud of the initial success in 2013. This exciting and effective platform is delivering great riding experiences, and it was great to see the enthusiasm the communities had for their trails - the online videos the winners submitted of their respective trails we helped build really show the program's impact. - IMBA Executive Director Mike Van Abel

Starting in January and running through the end of February, Bell Helmets and IMBA will begin taking applications for 2014 trails, with finalists named during the first week of March. Voting will then come in three regional phases, starting in April with the West coast, and ending in May with the East coast, with central voting in between. From there, all winners will be officially announced in May 2014, with trail design and construction beginning in June.

Hell yeah! Huge thanks to Bell for selecting Copper Harbor, I'm really excited to see what will be done with the money there.

I drove 1200 km to copper harbour last summer to ride for 3 days, after watching this video www.pinkbike.com/video/264030 . I am pleased to say it was well worth it. Now I have to go back next summer too!

I guess I will have to look into buying more Easton-Bell sports parts.

Looks like the program is for the States only. News update. The world and IMBA membership goes beyond that. Might be very, very cool to see the program expended outside the USA.

Why would a U.S. company like Bell Sports help fund new world class trails outside their own country?
Maybe RaceFace should start up a trail grant with IMBA to build something in Canada?
Copper Harbor rocks!

^^This. Or, since Race Face is still building its financial standing back up (quite well I might add), how about Devinci, Kona, Cove, Norco, Rocky Mountain....or the company with the most money to spare (and an IMBA advocacy partner) Dorel Industries, who owns Cannondale, Iron Horse, Schwinn, Mongoose, and GT?

Is it not about giving back to the riding community who supports the company? Are there not Canadian customers? Come on folks, pull your heads out of your arse and use your brain. Then again, they have the right to do with their money what they wish. So all the power to them, its nice to see them making an effort no matter where it may be.

So stoked to be a small part of helping Copper Harbor come so far so fast. Nice work Aaron Rogers and the CH crew, and hats off to IMBA for working with local talent to document the builds. Sustainable trails = a sustainable economy.

And all this time I thought Aaron Rogers was just an overrated quarterback….

IMBA are the last group of builders that you want building park features. Have you ever ridden gravity trail that trail solutions has built. Look at what happened to Tamarac Resort in Idaho.

We got imba involved and were all excited. All that has happened so far is we lost our only intermediate FR trails and got a flowy beginner line. We already had one, but we got another. I let my membership expire.

It always amazes me how some people can bitch about anything. You don't like it, go build your own trail or keep your mouth shut. Any bike trail is a great bike trail in my opinion. Just because it doesn't suit how you ride, doesn't mean it won't suite how someone else rides. They did an awesome job here in Steamboat! Go Bell and IMBA! THanks for the support!

WE BUILT OUR OWN TRAILS BEFORE WE PARTNERED WITH IMBA. The point of my statement was partnering with imba seems to have been related to getting them removed. Your advice was to just do it again, but mot only does that take time and money, but it is illegal. How would you feel if someone went and tore apart your favorite trail? Would it make you love them more?
IMBA wasn't entirely to blame. The NY DEC called the shots. We just thought that IMBA would go to bat for us since we payed them half of our fundraising money. Instead the whole process just left us with no freeride trails or money.

Watch the Copper Harbor video above. The Overflow trail has technical rock features, amazing wood stunts, and some big doubles (not shown in the video). Trail Solutions is certainly capable of building some very fun gravity trails.

Maybe that's further down the road for us. We need it.

Really glad that Bell is supportin trail building through these grants, just wish my home state of Indiana could have won. Would love to see some more agressive trails here.

Brevard NC would be a great candidate for such a program

I know there are some killer trails in NC already. NY could use some love.
