Holder of no less than nineteen world and national titles and a member of both BMX and Mountain Bike Halls of Fame, Brian Lopes remains one of the most recognizable names in the sport and still holds the enviable record of the biggest number of wins for any male on the UCI circuit. Edge Composites is delighted to announce the addition of this mountain biking legend to round out an already stunning line-up of riders for 2010.

Asked about his move to the Ogden, Utah brand, Lopes said "I'm stoked to be working alongside and running Edge Composites products. I'm blown away on how good their products are and couldn't be happier to join forces with Edge Composites as a rider and a product development partner. I'm always looking to better myself and my rides, and Edge has definitely raised the bar with their wheels, bars, stems, and seat posts. My bikes were already amazing but have just gotten that much lighter, stiffer, and more responsive - all categories that can only make my job of going fast that much easier.”

Lopes is renowned not only for his resolve and longevity in the sport; but also for the fact that he is never satisfied to simply rest on his laurels. Ever the competitor, he is always looking for ways to go faster, higher, and with more control be that on the bike, on his motorcycle or, as Edge employees recently discovered, in a go kart at the local track, Speed Street in Layton, Utah. Also lapped (but only twice) was Edge VP Global Sales and Marketing, Beverly Lucas, who agreed “I’ve known Lopes for years and always said that if I ever I had an opportunity to forge an alliance with one of the most professional, competitive and technically minded guys in the sport, I would call him in a heartbeat. Brian is an elite level every-guy style of rider – some one who every rider can relate to, whether they’re a racer or a weekend warrior. When we asked him to ride our wheels, I don't even think the sentence was finished before he said "yes", so it was great to have that sentiment reciprocated.”

Brian will equip all of his Ibis bikes with a range of Edge products including the Edge AM wheelset on Chris King hubs, the all new Edge sweep bar, Edge stem and seatpost. He will also be working closely with Edge engineers on future mountain bike specific projects. Asked what his new season will comprise, Lopes replied, “A lot like last year. I plan to hit 2010 events that have a good vibe, are well supported by the media, and most of all are fun events. Downhill, Dual Slalom, Super D, Enduro; I will be doing a little of everything on pretty much every continent.”

Stay tuned for an upcoming close up and review of Edge's AM Series carbon wheels and Sweep riser bar in the near future!

Cool that they got a good rider on there... Do want to see what these wheels will stand up to in '10 though with both him and the Syndicate guys on EDGE

I would kill to ride half as good as he can.

meh when you and your friends have had multiple bad experiences with him at multiple events, it starts to say something. Doesn't take away though that he's an amazing rider though. But people like weir and peaty are amazing riders and great people.

I'd read that site too, and then I met Brian. Now he and I had small incident a few months ago where IF he was going to be a super-douche, I can tell you it would have come out right then because he wanted me to change something that I couldn't change - but he was extremely understanding and professional about it and accepted my side of things. And at this event everyone wanted a little piece of Brian - I'd get sick of it too. And skills-wise - gotta be one of the best of all time.

I've heard all the trash talk, too, but I had a conversation with him at Crankworx Whistler last year and the guy was nothing but a class act. Took the time to talk to an old fart like me even though a crowd was wanting to chat him up. Think of how many times people seek him out to talk about (what must be for him) the same thing time after time. Bound to be edgy every now and again. Not only was he decent to me, he was downright nice.

so it seems like if you are older he'll be civil to you, but if you are "under him" he's a jerk...hmmm that seems like a professional attitude Rolleyes

I WILL NOT BE CENSORED OUT BY MODS!!!

Good luck with that. I posted an intelligent statement about the differences between the difference between having a "different" personality and being a jerk...but apparently that wasn't a warranted post and the person who is bending definitions of words and grammar to their whim gets to stay...

Brian Lopes is definitely an egocentric jerk. When you're in the spotlight as a pro you have certain responsibilities as a role model and sponsor promoter. He constantly comes off as a jerk and can't control his emotions and temper. I've seen this bad attitude a couple of times at the Sea Otter. This may help Edge with product development but many people, including me, will shy away from the rims because of his bad attitude. I'll stick with Reynolds, thanks.

 From a product viewpoint...

The Reynolds rims are quite XC, while Edge make a AM rim that has wider internal width (the external widths of both rims muddy the waters because of the bulge on the Reynolds). I like my Topo C's, but I'd swap it for an Edge AM in a heartbeat because I want to run fatter tires. I was lucky that I got some runout Topo C's when they switched from 28 hole to 24 (which just goes to show how strong those rims are). Weights are comparable much the same with the same hub and spoke count.

I emailed Reynolds on maximum tire width (and max pressure for my commuting slicks) but got no response. Even a 2.2 Larsen looks so fat on the Topo C - I'd hate to bust that lip off and its not something I'd really like to test the limits of.

"some one who every rider can relate to"- Ha. Lopes is a dick. He could win every race ever in the history entire world, he's still dick. He's a pro, that mad folks look up to, so he should drop the douche bag act and maybe try to not be a general a$$hole to just about everyone he meets.

Who cares if he's a jerk?! It's not like he's crashing any of your rides or backyard bbqs.
  • 3 1
because he is a representative for the company, would you want a jerk to represent you?
  • 3 0
norcalnomad...give it a rest dude. Your axe to grind gets old. That being said, I had never heard of EDGE until I saw the rims on Lopes bike. I asked him the other day friend to friend "so dude, carbon rims, they can't possibly be good" and he told me of some huge rock hits he has had with no issues, then took him and my wife for some DH runs and those things were straight as an arrow. Really nice stuff EDGE makes, wish I could afford it.

I don't like the actionphoto in this article, no matter who made it. it doesn't tell a story. It showes the Edge logo maybe, but it isn't promoting the brand Edge. They contracted Lopes to make the brand hot, and in this photo you can't see the value of Lopes for Edge. This photo does not show his style and what he is famous for. Don't take it to personal, but it just pisses me of as a photographer in the early morning haha. because in this case, Lopes is the brand to show of, he makes Edge wheels hot, not the other way around. Sorry, spend some money to hire a pro photographer or if this is a company's choice, get your act together, this won't sell.

I haven't met him personally, but he came to our country along with Hans, this was Hans second visit here. People/riders were very excited to meet Brian, but after the event some people have had some negative things to say about him, whilst Hans Rey was the coolest guy ever.

So his rims that are lighter than normal, great. he's also got heavy hubs with more drag than usual, what's the benefit?

 Good point!

dang, this company is shelling out big bucks...syndicate and lopes...o man, well goodluck...as per brian lopes,he's not too bad,he may seem like a prick at first, but i dont think anyone here would appreciate it if people wanted to chat with you while your doing practice runs, tuning ur bike or what not, doesmt matter who u are,pro or not, that can be annoying at times....i say, take a few steps back and try to see where he's coming from....oh yeah,he was nice enough to sign my oakley goggles and my fork (which happend to be a boxxer) lol..

EDGE handle bars are only 700mm wide. The price is also rediculously high for such thing. I don't think this can be called an upgrade.
  • 3 0
that will be one superlight bike
  • 3 1
I'm just wondering how such a small company suddenly found the cash to sponsor 4 of the biggest names in mountain biking.
  • 18 2
They finally sold a couple of sets of wheels at retail price!

How much more carbon could he possibly put on his ibis lol

To anyone giving Lopes a hard time or a bad name, lighten the hell up. This is Pinkbike not STAR weekly or the Enquirer, I dont care if he was a dick to you, in fact the first thing that comes to my mind is How big a dick are YOU. The only thing that matters is the way in which he rides his bike, and NO one on here can dispute that Brian Lopes is one of the Greatest all around Mountain bikers of all time. If you disagree then Who's better? He does it all and at a level that most of us couldnt even comprehend. Stop talking about his personality or how he didnt offer you a reach around after he finished his race, signed a couple hundred autographs, met with his sponsors and God forbid took 30 seconds to himself. Lopes dosent owe you anything and he' not super human, stop being a selfish prick.

There are tons of other pro's that are as good as him but are still amazingly friendly on all levels...I've never once heard one thing bad about weir or shaums, shit weir lets just about random kids from marin ride his pump track.
  • 3 0
NorCalNomad, people are DIFFERENT, the have different personalities. I've never heard of him physically hurting anyone. There's no rule that great athletes HAVE to kiss everyones ass, especially snotty little rich kids looking for handouts. Friends and family are what's important, I was under the impression he's not short of either..

Full carbon is a good thing, soooooooooooooooooooooooper light!
