A lot of Eastern stuff is missed out on..

It is kind of odd that a Canadian website has more stuff on European races than here. Perhaps there just needs to be more people submitting content?

If there were someone covering the events and submitting photos and stories etc as suggested by Canadmos we would cover it. Most of our European coverage is sent to us by the event organizers or promoters, Canadian Cycling doesn't do that unfortunately.

@Ian sorry but I don't buy it, this is a major event on the circuit and deserves much better coverage, you guys need an agent located in the east to collate and submit content. This is lame sauce and IMHO a bit of an insult to the huge and long established racing, DH and XC scene out east. My 2c.

flag IanHylands Mod Plus (May 23, 2011 at 13:59)
Exactly, we need an agent located in the east, that would be the "someone covering the events and submitting photos and stories etc" that I suggested. Unfortunately so far we haven't had any volunteers, and a quick look through the photos on the site this morning didn't turn up anything from the event so far. So I agree that it's lame, but lame on the part of the bike community, not us. The majority of news coverage that we produce is user generated, we might post it, but the photos and videos and race reports come from Pinkbike users. We pay for select coverage of major international events, right now that's the World Cup circuit and a few larger freeride events, outside of that the budget is $0. So instead of complaining here you should complain to Cycling Canada for not promoting their events...

flag gnarbar (May 23, 2011 at 14:11)
Who's "complaining" ? I'm giving you feedback. Take it or leave it as far as that is concerned but leaving a big hole in your content and then turning that issue back on the riding community......whatever. But since Pinkbike became a commercially orientated profit driven "online magazine" with a gazillion new employees and experts and the accountability and expectations that come with it, instead of a site geared around grassroots user-generated content, you can expect more constructive criticism coming from the peanut gallery.
  • + 9
flag IanHylands Mod Plus (May 23, 2011 at 14:24)
"Lame Sauce" is feedback? Hardly, but it's nice to know what certain people think, thank you for expressing your opinion, and I do mean that quite sincerely. As for "commecially orientated profit driven"??? There is no profit, if there was it go straight to photographers etc so that we could have more exclusive content. We currently have 7 employees, and we work incredibly long hours, usually 7 days a week. Before you start making comments like the one above you should learn a little bit about what you're talking about. Pinkbike is a site that is geared around grassroots user-generated content, that's exactly what I said above, you got that part right, but for some reason you put an "instead" in front of your point. If and when Pinkbike does become a "commercially orientated profit driven" website I will be stoked as hopefully we'll all get paid a little more for the hours we put in and we'll also be able to provide you with more "local" content. That's the end of my discussion, please do some basic research and figure out the facts before you start spouting off. Also in the future if you have some long discussion you want to get into please do it by personal message, this is not the place for it.

hey Ian, being at the event was a great experience although it was short because of a broken collar bone and internal bleeding in my thigh. but here is an idea that will resolve both of u argueing. Why not make a group on PB of riders and organizers that will cover these events?and have aa place where u can post pictures and stories in the forum. i know i have a lot of input. Also is there a canada cup forum? i know there is one for ontario. hope you consider my idea,Scott
  • + 1
flag IanHylands Mod Plus (May 23, 2011 at 16:20)
Thanks Scott, There isn't currently a place to create a Canada Cup forum, so we'll have to figure that part out first, the rest should be easy. I'm thinking probably in the DH/4X section. There are currently Canadian forums by region, but the Canada Cup series crosses regional boundaries. There is normally coverage of regional events on the site, and as LlamaCycles has said below he will be doing a post on the event. I think the biggest issue in this case is that in Canada it's a long weekend, and Tyler, even though he's out of the office, went out of his way to post the results as soon as he got them, but there wasn't any other content available at the time... It's fairly normal for us to post quick results and then update the post later with photos etc. and I fully expected there to be a bunch of people submitting content from this race today.

Hope you heal up quick!

flag cloverleaf Plus (May 23, 2011 at 16:24)
As Ian has already said, there's lots of European coverage because there are a good number of guys this side of the pond who either race and submit reports like I do, photographers who produce a report to showcase their images or organisers who are willing to pull some photo's and words together about what happened at their event to boost coverage. If people aren't willing to do that then it's difficult to get content - all too often riders promise to provide a report but never fulfil.

As an example, last year I raced over twenty five events and pulled together reports for virtually all of them - only a lack of pictures at one and work/travel commitments immediately after another stopped me having a 100% record. That's not paid either, before some get the wrong idea. It involves time spent speaking to photographers to arrange photos to be loaded asap after an event (themselves having to balance a job in the real world) and dragging full copies of results from the organisers. If people are desperate to see an event covered and are there themselves then why not try to sort out some pics and pull together a report yourself? Race reports aren't hard to put together but it's hard to get people, racers especially, to find the time to produce one for an event. Also, in Europe there are huge numbers of races going on, even in the UK there are two or sometimes three events going on every weekend from March to October with between 200 and 300 racers at each. That means more people interested in reading about them, more to write about and more people potentially able to do the writing.

flag IanHylands Mod Plus (May 23, 2011 at 16:46)
Thanks Marc! For stuff like this we don't need a zillion banger shots. I'm very happy to have podium shots as well as one or two decent shots of the winners in action and maybe a couple of random action and lifestyle shots. If there are some great shots in there all the better, but I don't expect photographers to give away stuff that they could be selling... Ideally we like to have the results up pretty quick, at least the top 5 or 10 in pro men and women, followed by a few photos and a brief report when available, perhaps some more supporting images after. Everyone feel free to let me know what they're doing and posting, and add me as a friend here if you haven't so that I'll see your stuff when you post it. A big part of my job is coordinating photos and reports from events, and as cloverleaf said above, there is a lot going on. And the stuff that gets submitted has a good chance of being posted, stuff that I have to search out and wait for ends up at the bottom usually...

flag racealot (May 23, 2011 at 18:53)
I think complaining or rather what I call back and forth open ended feedback is a little much from everybody. What needs to be addressed is there was a race, above are the results a race report with photos will follow at some point in the next day or so,we all know there will be an onslaught of them too. And a friendly reminder that Pinkbike is west coast based and this event happened out east, so there is the possibility of time/travel discrepancies. Not to mention that today is a holiday here, so the fact Ian took the time and due diligence to post something today should suffice enough until those photos and write-ups are presented, in this case contributed by Lama, along any other media resources that were in attendance. Be patient everybody, the digital world is efficient but there's also a tipping point for those working theirs butt off to be as real time as possible..

Thanks everyone, this may be a starting point. I know we reached out to almost everyone we knew of that might have had photos of the race and none of the photographers we contacted went to the event. We managed to get the results from Canadian Cyclist, but even they didn't have any photos, which truly amazes me. We've had hundreds of DH photos posted today on the site (592 at this point) but not one from the Canada Cup. I can only assume that there really weren't any photographers there. I'm looking forward to seeing what shows up tomorrow though, I won't be around to post anything as I'm flying to the East Coast for the US Open, but Brule should be back in the office tomorrow sometime.

Pinkbike has gone worldwide. Most people don't care whats happening in the grassroots BC races (except for us in BC). Used to have tons of Canadian DH racing coverage. but there comes a time when you have to go with what pays the bills.

Nice work Drew, Dean, Lauren, Miranda, Riley, and Max. BC killing it on the National scene. sorry if I missed more of the BC rippers.

The problem is finding folks like yourself that are able to create content at events. Since we work all week and then are expected to cover all events all over the world on the weekends, it's tough to pull it all together. We got this info from the good folks at Canadian Cyclist and even they were not able to get pics from the event.

I understand that Pinkbike has limited resources and cannot cover all events but that is a lame excuse; this is a Canada Cup hosted in Pinkbike’s own Country and deserves a bit of an effort. Instead of hoping for someone to offer up pictures and coverage, why doesn’t Pinkbike be more proactive and seek out volunteers and photographers prior to the competition?? I hate it when Websites and Companies get some global traction and then they forsake their domestic audience.
