Video: Coastal Crew - Wetness

Jan 13, 2015
by Coastal Crew
The only thing you hear going down the trail is your bike, you're tuned into every sound it makes. One of the most satisfying things is a tire pattering down the trail, squashing muck, sliding over roots and smashing puddles. Unfortunately this lush, raw sound is often lost in most videos, overtaken by the music. Curtis Robinson takes advantage of winter conditions and makes some noise with his Stumpjumper FSR EVO.

haha while it is incredible with the lights off... I'd argue that its better with the lights on so you can see all the action...

OH I can see a wave coming. A wave of videos with out music in 2015. Good? Bad? I cant tell yet!
  • 10 0
Don't feed the troll. "Keyboardkilla"? Really?
  • 37 1
Was the title a reference to the trail conditions or the effect the video has on my underwear?

Is it just me or from 1:14-1:26 does it sound like cartoon characters running?

 Brown Wetness.

Wait - they rode wet trails. And the trails survived? How can that be? The trail nazis here would never believe that to be true. If I even hint that I rode in the mud, they have an aneurism...
  • 5 3
 they built the trail...?
  • 29 1
The B.C. Loam can handle it I think. It is a bummer to find rutted, widened trails here in San Diego after a rare rain storm. I usually ride fire roads when it is wet to save the singletrack. Hey, wait,... Maybe they should outlaw riding wet trails in Canada so the Americans can compete in the FMB.
  • 22 2
It's soil dependent. Ride on our trails in Calgary and you'll destroy them, ride Silverstar or Whistler wet and you'll do no harm.
  • 1 0
@cueTIP - agreed. Most will go to the spots least or unaffected. Usually sandy soil.
  • 5 1
Certain trails can handle it and certain ones can't. As a rider on the west coast you should learn which trails handle the wet (ie more exposed rock or well worn trails) and which can't (low areas with no drainage etc). One of my favorite trails is pretty torn up this winter with deep holes that will require alot of work to fix and it is a trail that should be avoided in the wet.
  • 2 1
@sasquatch-yeti the truest statement. i am going out tomrrow, and i'm certain i'll find rutts and destroyed trail features everywhere. screw our dirt man

It took me awhile to get used to wet weather riding and how accepted it was in the PNW after moving here from the Midwest US. Out there, you'd get rediculed for riding trails right after (or during) rain, people would spit in your general direction.

In Seattle, some trails drain well enough or have been armored enough that wet riding doesn't do it much harm, if any. Some trails are ONLY fun in the wet season out here Smile

That particular trail is an abandoned logging road from 100+ years ago that will likely withstand the apocalypse, let alone some rainy day sessions!
  • 1 0
Riding wet trails seems so odd to me. One it doesnt't rain in California anymore. Two, well...one just about covers it.
  • 5 0
If you ever ride in the UK guys, any trail is on in the wet. If the trail gets 'harmed' it's just more ruts for next time whoop whoop
  • 1 0
@Dally666 we've been getting more than average rain recently. as in actual rain.

Love hearing the sounds of just the bike, brings a whole different feeling to the video
  • 17 0
That feeling when you're already wet everywhere and you just say: Oh shit! I don't care! ...and shred it through all the water. Big Grin

I like no music over the usual terrible shit people choose for their videos.

Is it only me or does it look like the bike was a bit small for him, or he was too big for the bike?
  • 3 0
I got that impression as well.

Always cheers up my day watching a coastal crew video
  • 9 0
That bike sounds like a running horse!!!
  • 9 1
too much full speed video said no one ever.
  • 5 1
I wonder if this video was made in response to the constant complaints of crap music used in many of the vids on PB. I personally love it and vote for a whole month of no music/just bike sounds videos. Great riding btw.
  • 5 0
So thats how u ride in the wet.. I thought i was doing something wrong when i was taking silly lines to avoid puddles and wet horse shit
  • 2 1
They prepared the trail or something. When I ride in the wet, there is no grip...

 26 Stumpy, my love !
  • 7 1
i love this bike! and i like how the coastal crew is sticking to their beloved 26" rigs! 27,5" no, 29" no :-)

Recently got a 26" stumpy evo. Fantastic bike, especially with a Monarch Plus and Pike!

watching this video is what makes me love riding in the Pacific Northwest. The terrain here can be very rocky, tree roots, dry, slick mud, loamy and steep. I also own a 26 Stumpy pro. I love that bike.
  • 5 1
Mountain bike Industry has abandoned 26" wheels... because bigger/wagon wheels are better.

Not sure why all the costal crew still rides 26" ????? ... Hmmm

Well done Coastal Crew; Well done Curtis
Couldn't meet a greater crew of Sport Ambassadors, my son was there this past weekend, with the Whistler Bike Park Crew, and he raved about the conditions and the great hospitality.....
The Coast Gravity Park is a "diamond" that must be seen.

I watched this wearing one headphone. 0:13 till 0:16 gave me the strong feeling that someone was peeing in my ear.

In fairness, of the winter ride vids I've seen so far, that actually qualifies as being fairly damp. Almost actually wet in fact. Nice no bullshit video as well.

OH MY GOSH, this is one of the best videos I have ever seen. Am I alone here?????
  • 1 0
Fantasticness. How do you ride in condiments like this with no eyewear though? I'm always squinting! Can you just go fast enough so that the water never makes it to your eyes?
  • 3 0
Raw was a pretty sweet change aswell! Well done!

Velociraptor at 0:55, galloping horses at 1:20 and the look of pure joy at 1:30. More please!
  • 3 1
The only thing better than the coastal crew's song choices is their choice of pure riding noises. Simply brilliant!
  • 1 0
Great video, I never ride with music so really nice to not only watch great riding but actually hear the beautiful sounds that the bike and nature make. Good work!
  • 3 0
Holy jebus dude is fast. Rocky rooty section that fast in the wet! Wow.

When is coastal crews fat bike video coming out?
  • 1 0
Living on the west coast I have many epic rides like this. Feels amazing till you stop then try to do anything with an extremely wet pair of shorts on. Soggy ass not fun.

Dear @leelau Please do not watch this. The erosion factor must be through the roof!
  • 1 0
 Nah, not with that soil.
  • 3 0
Huh? I haven't. Should I? They build their own trails
  • 3 1
This made me wet. Wetter than an otters pocket.
  • 7 0
actually there are close to a million otter hairs per square inch of otter. This keeps their skin from getting wet. Therefore an otter's pocket would be bone dry.
  • 7 0
does it have sealed zips or something? It would be impossible for an otter to reach into it's pocket to get a snickers or what have you without water getting in. Without waterproof zips, and otters pocket would be very wet, it's skin is not in question, i'm sure Darwin's theory set those little scamps up very well in that regard. But zips? Hmmmm.
  • 3 0
As a west coast sea otter expert, i l know that they do indeed have waterproof, sealed zips. hand made in North America, not in Taiwan. (extremely expensive) I guess French otters have cheaper Taiwanese zips so I can see your confusion.
