Top 5 Shimano Slopestyle

1. Brandon Semenuk 96.67
2. Martin Soderstrom 94
3. Brett Rheeder 90.67
4. Cam Zink 86.67
5. Casey Groves 85.67

Hi-Chew Best Trick

1. Thomas Genon

Wow, Brandon Semenuk seems unstoppable at the moment. Once again he threw down what was the winner on his first run. Thomas Genon took home the Hi-Chew Best Trick award with his truck driver to tailwhip combo.

Top 3 First Runs

Brandon Semenuk - 360 x up off the drop, tail whip over the berm to berm, opposite whip on and opposite 360 off the whale tail, hard 3 over the hip, jumping clear over the up box, tuck no over the long low, and a cork 720 over the jump. 96.67 points

Martin Soderstrom - 360 table off the drop, tail whip over the berm to berm gap, tuck no hander onto and double whip off the whale tail, hard 360 table over the hip, truck off the up box, nac over the long low, then a 360 double whip over the jump for 94 points. Only 2.67 points behind Semenuk. Brandon may have to work for this one.

Brett Rheeder - 360 off the drop, opposite whip on and 360 table off the whale tail, truck over the hip, 360 off the up box, tail whip over the long low, and then a front flip over the jump for 90.67 points.

Second Runs

Part way through the 2nd runs there was a rain hold, and then the rain started to really come down. The decision was made to wait for things to dry out a bit before continuing the event.

Semenuk, Soderstrom and Rheeder couldn't quite keep it together on their second runs, so their first-run scores stand.

FMBA Overall

Sam Pilgrim was unable to compete today, leaving the number one spot in the FMBA World Tour open for Martin Soderstrom. This is the first time Martin has been in the FMBA points lead, we'll have to see if he can keep it through Claw's, Crankworx, and Rampage.

 Soderstrom = Robbed, again
  • + 15
Are you a bit slow? Look at the tricklist. The only feature where he *might* have been scored higher than Brandon is the 3 double whip on the last jump... MAYBE. Everything else is either the same or Brandon takes it.
  • - 7
not even gonna bother arguing because his run was cleaner...
  • + 30
Brandon: opposite whip on and opposite 360 off the whale tail
Martin: tuck no hander onto and double whip off the whale tail

Brandon: jumping clear over the up box
Martin: truck off the up box

Brandon: cork 720 over the jump
Martin: 360 double whip over the jump
  • - 39
his double whip was better than clearing the box, id class that as a straight air and no points... and the 3 double whip was waaay cleaner than the 720....
  • - 18
cheers for that, you know i can read... i said cleaner not about which tricks...
  • + 25
face it the canadians are just jealous because we just beat them at volleyball in the olympics Wink
  • + 20
Look at the runs up top. They were close. Semenuk clearing the up box and Soderstrom double whiping off the whale tail are the main differences. First of all Semenuk was the only one to clear the up box all together, which adds big points. Last jump was a 3 double whip for Soderstrom and a cork 720 for Brandon. Could be wrong but is the 720 not a bit more difficult?

It also comes down to smoothness of every trick, and with the quality of that footage there was no doubt things we missed. Either way they were close and I don't disagree with the judges.
  • - 12
a truck off the box would be alot harder than simply gapping it?
  • - 26
clearing the box wasnt even the biggest gap on course... it was a straight air
  • + 3
 Zink 4th , seriously ? still cant believe , wtf judges ?!
  • + 6
a lot more people did a truck off the box while only semenuk gapped the whole box. still would've been cool to see semenuk trick over the box.
  • + 10
Haha all the euro folk are going to complain right the the end of the tour and definitely after north America takes it again. Really soderstrom had a good run but its not like it was day and night between him and semenuk.
  • + 1
i thought that 360 off the whale tail was regular not an oppo. however, martin run was better. again zink gets points for ballride and land on 4th position before guys who pulled clear run from top to bottom... ehh
  • + 1
Didn't say harder. More original yes. Im no pro at judging these events, neither is anyone else here. These are just our opinions. And seriously that footage was not great quality. We we're not there.
  • + 12
all these pros can double tail whip and its becoming a staple trick. not too many can do the cork 7 or even want to try and attempt one. This sports about progression and you have to throw down new tricks to win it. if everyone was throwing down the same tricks it will come down to who was cleaner. me personally im tired of watching martin double tail whip year after year its becoming a one trick pony
  • - 5
And a lot of pros can oppo whip and oppo 360, its a staple trick too, but everyone goes mad over semenuks. martins double whips may be a staple trick too, but they are more impressive IMO than oppo crap.
  • + 41
i think everything was appropriately judged. but honestly can kyle ebbett shut up for two seconds? all he talks about is his course building ability and how he has such good input on constructing a course. guess what, if half the riders are using hardtails and someone can gap OVER one of your features...its time to step it up. and all of his commentary was not constructive and rather offensive to some of the riders, you dont talk about how you "hope this guy doesnt blow a tire like he did in practice" while the dude is about to drop in. and if some of the riders sat and watched their run and listened to what he was saying im sure a handful would have been beyond pissed. please get a new announcer who is alittle more positive it makes these competitions alot more fun to watch
  • + 5
Ebbet def had some questionable comments. But his heart and soul were deep in the event. That is something you all have to admire.
  • - 5
the way he talked about kelly mcgarry wa pretty rude, so what if hes older than the other guys? he shreds like noone else! kyle ebbet is all washed up and building courses, and not even good ones at that.

still think soderstrom was robbed, euros should abandon american/canadian comps
  • + 4
that whole course was pretty crap. Just look at this, everybody had to pedal between features to jump and these 2 berms over 35ft drop, seriously?
  • - 3
the 2berms were a waste of space, could have been a big old gnarly hip in there so we could have seen more tricks which would have made for a more interesting competition
  • + 6
I don't get why everyone is whining about the result... both runs were very good! It's hard to say which was better, I can live with semenuk getting a higher score, as soderstrom didn't trick on the whale tail and semenuks huck over the up box was crazy!!! Don't forget there's also points for creativity, he was the only one who dared to do it, so that gets you lots of points!!! But both had the chance to do a second run, both bailed, semenuk wins, everything is ok! As long as Soderstrom doesn't whine about it, no one else should!!
  • + 8
No one was robbed - fairly judged could have gone either way. If you really think Canadians and Americans team up and slag euro riders at FMB events by ranking them 2nd!!! you're an idiot. The British are just jealous at how much better our Oympics were
  • + 7
does anyone give a f*ck about the olympics right now? this is far more important
  • + 2
 What is THIS?
  • + 3
Sorry, ignore the previous one. Stupid comment, too many coronas already Wink
  • - 4
Tho a truck off the box would be more difficult then gapping it proubly semenuk was the only person doing the gap and that's what got him those points I think
  • + 16
People bitch about Slopestyle turning into just a big DJ Trick contest then, when riders take huge lines like Semenuk over the up box they bitch because he didnt trick it!! Its SlopeSTYLE, you get points for doing badass stuff like being creative and hucking things that no one else is.
  • + 4
I was talking today about weather or not the brits would complain about the results (as they are known to do) but decided no way because semenuk was the clear winner but i guess not lol It seems like you guys are just a bit scared because you know semenuk is gonna win the overall!
  • + 4
Regardless of the scoring on the podium (even though I agree with the judges) I gotta say it's insane how consistent the top tier of riders has gotten. Forget about the different banger tricks, Semenuk, Rheeder, and Soderstrom have been throwing down amazing runs at every comp and consistently landing their tricks. I feel like last year there was more of a toss-up for the winner simply because EVERYONE has a bail at some point. But damn, the top 3-4 riders look like they've put in some serious practice work on consistency and having everything dialed. Incredible sport to watch nowadays!
  • + 2
I completely agree with the comments about Ebbet. He has to be the stupidest announcer ever. He gets really excited and makes everything sound so cool when the rider is a buddy of his. He says the stupidest shit sometimes. I don`t care if his `hearts in it`, him and his stupid comments should not be how some riders get remembered. PLUS the sand landing was killing people and he built it, he even admitted some riders crashed cause of it. Good on ya..
  • + 2
Could the riders hear the announcers during their runs, or was it just for the video?
  • - 1
Ha ha, lots of hypocrites on this website. Semenuk does something no one else does in a comp run and everyone is all over it like it's the best thing ever and super innovative, Pilgrim does the first ever flat drop backflip in a comp a few weeks before and no one mentions anything about innovation or creativity or even cares because his name isn't Semenuk. The sand landing at the end was a mixed bag for me. If people like Semenuk and Soderstrom can land it clean then I reckon it must have been ok. Sure they are the top level pro's but then this was a pro level event so you need to be able to adapt to different course conditions to win it.

Thomas Genon should have been 3rd!!! Seriously wtf?!?!?! 7th!?!?!?!

So bummed that soderstrom didn't stick his second run. He definatley could have beaten semenuk.

Couldn't ride because of a hurt shoulder

He deserved 3rd or second... cmon judges his run was sick!!

  • + 8
Is it just me, or are a lot of people getting boners over opposite tricks right now? Thats been the big deal of the last few contests, Semenuks oppo steeze. I missed the contest, but congrats to the winners, and its nice to see zink back up there, not crashing out on a frontflip.
  • + 0
Other than being very difficult, I personally think oppo tricks look way cool and more flowy down the hill ( when done right ). IIRC, up until a year or two ago, The Claw was the only one spinning both ways in a comp.
  • + 1
Opposite tricks score huge with the judges, most people can't trick those stunts regularly, for these guys to be pulling a trick as tech as a tailwhip opposite is nuts. Makes it significantly harder when you have to kick with your front foot, same goes for spinning into your front foot. I don't know how much jumping you do but it's extremely awkward so doing it smooth and over whale-tails and off drops is worth a lot of points in the judges eyes.

  • + 7
I agree that the runs were close, but Brandon definitely had the edge. When all you all have the balls to throw down a cork 7 and jump that "straight air" then you can voice your opinions about the "unjust" judging.
[Reply]
  • + 6
I think if it weren't for the sand landing on the last jump things could have been different, guys werent landing there tricks because of it, hopefully next year it's a harder packed landing and these guys can stomp some huge tricks. Props to semenuk for yet another win!

Guys I was there and watched the whole thing, I think that most times judges help Semenuk and I was really cheering for Martin(srsly) but I really think this time he deserved to win, about gapping the box, it was fair for him to score on that because it wasn't made for gapping... I know that he doesn't deserves many of his wins, but when he does win by doing a awesome run you guys shouldn't start sayin' that he didn't derserve to win... Besides, look the scores, Semenuk got 96.67 while Martin got 94.00, thats a difference of 2.67 points(you don't say) those are pretty close scores guys...
[Reply]
  • + 3
Yeah, this was a close one but I think the judges had it right. Semenuk's run was more innovative and set apart from the other riders. Soderstrom's run was really nice but not quite as innovative. This is the first year I missed going to this event. At least the webcast was solid with no chop! Props
[Reply]
  • + 3
think that semenuk won for all his oppo tricks and deserved it but maybe not by such i big margin, though if martin manged his second run with a 3 triple whip it would have been his
  • + 1
he missed his barspin on the whale tail, if he had done that, it would've been worth more than 2 points, so he would've won!
[Reply]

Watched a few of these now, and for me there's 3 reasons why Semenuk wins and why he's better than the rest.
1. He's consistently good, his runs are well constructed and faultless.
2. His level is so high that he could watch a run by a competitor, see them raise the bar, then should he choose to do so replace one trick with another at a moments notice.
3. Confidence he's so goo on anybike (as shown in Life Behind Bars & Strength in Numbers) he knows he will pull it off 1st time, whereas all the rest have one or two really big tricks and hope for the best.

All this after following injury. For me the only riders coming close are Soderstrom (aslo unbeliveable on a big bike) Pilgrim (whose still a bit ragged around the edges and now Rheeder.

By the way as a Brit, If it weren't for the North Americans there'd be no slopestyle, so lets stop moaning.

Semenuk's run was rad, crazy risky manoeuvre gapping that up-box, definitely a deserved win! But imho that course looked lame, the stunts were very run of the mill and might have been decent 2-3 years ago, the level of the other courses on the FMBA tour have been much higher, as for the sand-landing, thats a seriously big WTF!!! These guys are top pros, sand landings are for practising tricks and are very difficult to ride out of, at a pro competition riders should have their tricks dialled and not need soft landings. Very poor decision there!

Semenuk deserved the win by far. cleanest run. i dont see anyone pulling tricks nearly as great as that cork 720, such an amazing trick

I love how goons think the air over the trick box was no big deal! Gnarliest move of the comp, doing that should have won even if Semenuk did x ups the whole way down.
  • + 1
I remember watching Timo P. almost die when he tried airing over a box during joyride many years back. Even though he didn't stick it, it is still the only thing that I remember from that event, not the winner. Just like Anthony Messere doing the first front flip off a drop in comp on his first trick, I don't remember B's run. You gotta go big to get remembered. I am stoked that this year I got a media pass to shoot this years Joyride. I hope B sends it over the box I'm shooting under.

Lets put it this way, both runs were great, so fun to watch, but... Don't you think Semenuk could do a run like Martins with his eyes closed? Semenuk was doing runs like that two years ago. Sure, Martins run was a bit cleaner, but Semenuks was more innovative. Don't get me wrong, Martins run was great, super clean in all aspects, but if he hit the one he missed maybe he wins. Semenuk pushes the envelope of the sport more than anyone and does things no one else does, thats why he wins.

I have to say it would be a little difficult to choose best trick, especially between Thomas Genon's truck to late whip and Casey Groves' 360 superseat to late bar.

semenuk is still the machine this guy is unstopable.he will propably win fmb tour this year.he is followed by soderstrom but whith rampage and joyride coming up chances are not that good for soderstrom to win because he is not that good on bigger jumps.rheeder is a rising star but he wont take the win this year but when semenuk gets older he will be the best
