Contest: Name This Frame From Dartmoor Bikes - Winner

Apr 3, 2013
by Dartmoor-Bikes
It was not easy to make this decision. After hours spent reading came hours of discussion, which resulted in picking the Top Ten. Now we want to present you the winner.

We were searching for a name that would fit the character and application of this frame. We were searching for associations with the freedom of shredding down the mountains and touching nature.

Micha liwa and Maciej Hojnor took Dartmoor Wish and new FR proto for local shredding in My lenice Poland. www.wolisphoto.com menaged to combine Winter amp Autumn feel in those beauties

For each one of us, those riding bikes, different words have different meanings. Many times, the meaning of a word is a sum of one’s life experience and personal character. For all of us this meaning will be definitely influenced by the hundreds of miles spent on the trails.

Sometimes we celebrate the freedom of choice when picking the right track or enjoy how the wind is blowing in our backs. Sometimes riding is a cure helping us to recover after a hard week at work, and soon becomes our addiction. Sometimes riding helps us to hear the primal call of the nature and come back to the roots as far as possible from the city jungle.

We want our new frame to help riding like that. We know the decision we made will not please everyone. But this is our choice and we hope that you can respect this. The winning name is ROOTS and the first one who posted this name and won the prize is Gmancool99 from Scotland.

Congratulations from Pinkbike and Dartmoor-Bikes! The Wish Pro complete bike will be sent to the winner before and of April.

The meaning of ROOTS for us sounds like getting back to nature. With mountain tracks full of roots. With woods and big trees drawing their strength from their roots. That is the place where we want to meet you. No matter if you will come there with a new Dartmoor Roots frame or any other bike. The most important is that we are all the part of the mountain biking world.

Ride Your Way!

I believe "roots"in Australia means triumphant copulation of sorts...
In Aussie land, rooting someone is a coliquilaism for shagging.

Kinda a dirty name now that I think of it...

Enjoy the sex machine Gman

 Congrats
I was in the running with Shiva.

seriously I thought the top ten was a joke. Who would have thought they missed the hundreds of props of agreement from the mountain bike community the Dartmoor Santa Cruz Nomad got?
  • 2 0
 happy shredding ! Smile
  • 6 0
Being Australian, it's going to make telling my parents what bike I want a rather awkward situation

Same thing for me, when I was younger I asked for a bike called "morning glory" before I knew what that was. It was very awkward once dad stopped laughing and told me what it meant.
  • 1 0
So saying I want a morning glory was the worst thing I've said
  • 2 0
i cant even imagine your happyness enjoy your bike!!!
  • 2 0
 congrats, bthw sick name mate!
  • 1 0
So could i design the color scheme for the frame for coming up with "root"?
  • 3 1
Congrats! I actually posted the same with the needed explanation on their Facebook, but I am sure somwbody must've been faster. Enjoy your prize! It's cool to know you are right, kind of. Smile Cheers!
  • 3 2
My idea was the Dartmoor Chara (Latin for root) Frown
  • 1 0
 Well done mate!
  • 33 1
Congrats to the winner. Hope u enjoy the bike as much as I would!
  • 122 4
I can't believe "Dartmoor Trek Session" didn't win...
  • 4 1
I actually like the name a lot! People said the top 10 were bad, but I like this because it's simple and actually has the meaning dartmoor wanted!
  • 20 5
I still the "Dartmoor Norbs" got robbed.
  • 15 1
is there a "norbs got robbed" t-shirt i can buy?
  • 18 1
Fullbug, there is a 'Norbs got robbed' t-shirt. I had one... but someone stole it.
  • 3 6
iamamodel.. WHERE DID YOU GET IT?!
  • 1 4
my aging bones would benefit more from that shirt than that bike! where do we get 'em?!
  • 4 0
I was wondering why I got neg propped, then it hit me.. I'm not blonde, in case you guys were wondering.
  • 1 0
 @iamamodel HAHAHAHHHAHAH!!!!
  • 21 2
damn, winning something awesome with a little creativity behind you computer.. I wish winning was that easy with everything Smile
  • 12 2
I'm not sure creativity is the right word to use because that was a god awful top 10. Congrats to that Scot ripper!
  • 5 1
yeah, there were far more creative names. Dartmoor Pork Sword, Norbs got robbed and Trek session spring to mind Wink
  • 2 0
 Where' the top 10?
  • 2 3
would be cool to win a new bike like this. but roots sucks and i think that top ten was crap. sorry
  • 19 2
i think Specialized is gonna sue cause Trees have roots, but if you cut them down to stumps, the roots are still there and that's to close to Stumpjumper... consumers might get confused...
  • 15 0
And looks like the winner really was in need of a proper bike too!
Really stoked for the guy tup
  • 20 6
How did Dartmoor Trek Session not win? It's a fix.
  • 1 0
 Yeah !
  • 20 7
I still think MRbrett deserves the prize for "Santa Cruz Nomad"
  • 4 3
That almost works but it would have to be "modified single pivot SC Nomad" because at the end of the day that's all this frame design is.
  • 10 1
Pretty rad considering the kid states he's 13 on his profile. Maybe a load of shit but if not it's nice to see the bike going to someone that, in any other regard, find it difficult to fund a bike. Congrats dude regardless!
  • 6 0
Congrats Gman. Have fun on your new ride!
  • 6 0
dartmoor dingleberry would have been much better
  • 2 1
Haha, when I saw this on the front page all I could think of was "nomad". For obvious reasons. The damn page was spinning in circles though so I couldn't leave a comment at the time.

It certainly resembles my Nomad, in a large way!
  • 1 0
 Congratulations, however

'Roots', by Alex Haley, was a very popular and powerful novel and later TV mini-series exploring the origins of his own family's "roots" in a terrible time in US and world history. Many literate folks 'of a certain age' were deeply affected by this as this era in history was all too often glossed over in education curricula. Just to bring it full circle, ready for it.... turns out Alex Haley had Scottish roots...

www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/culturenews/4885075/DNA-proves-author-Alex-Haley-had-Scottish-roots.html

How often, truth is stranger, and better, than fiction....
Now to get my root down...
  • 3 0
Dartmoor could use a SEPULTURA song in their next ad for this bike. There is a song called "Roots Bloody Roots". A good one, btw!!!

youtu.be/F_6IjeprfEs
  • 9 5
I didn't win? Then I guess I'm not getting one.
  • 2 1
hahahaha, i like what you did there
  • 3 0
Whoa!!! if you buy this bike and assemble it, the wheels wont need spokes!! Big Grin Congrats to the winner!
  • 5 0
yeah they work like the Dyson bladeless fan. I like the bike more than I like the name- but thankfully I don't buy bikes because of what they're called. Having said that I would not buy a bike called 'The Bellend'.
  • 3 1
winning a new bike is cool, but i think i'd rather wait and win the bike that i was actually responsible for naming. he'll have to buy one just like everybody else.
  • 5 3
 "Whats your name, boy?

Kunta, Kunta Kinte!

::whipcrack::

Your name is Toby!"

Sorry, it's all I can think of when I hear of this bike's name...
  • 5 1
If this is all that comes to your mind I seriously think you should find a new hobby. Maybe weight assisted extreme deep sea snorkeling in shark infested waters.
  • 3 0
 ^offended easily?
  • 2 1
one of my friends use this name too! can you provide a printscreen or something where the people can see the time when the winner post this name , pls!
  • 2 0
If anything its more of a bottle rocket, I think since they got discontinued Dartmoor saw there in
  • 1 0
its exactly like a bottle rocket...
  • 1 0
Semantics, but not really. Shock mount is on top tube on BR and downtube on this bike. Shock linkage is different and the lower piviot point is behind the seat tube on BR and in front of seat tube on Roots, but I see where you are coming from.
  • 1 0
Didn't feal like reading every post to see if I'm repeating what somene already said ......but please post some pics when you get it. It looks sick !!
  • 3 0
KURWA MAĆ !... congratulations man ! enjoy your new bike !
  • 1 0
Aww man, im too late... I would have called it the 'Dartmoor Float'. It kinda links in with their other frame names like 'Wish' and 'Shine'. Frown
  • 6 3
I hate roots , they always make me crash!!!
  • 1 0
just imagin yourself showing off your bike... and you have to say, man i love your new Demo! and then you say yeah, but im riding the new Dartmoor ROOTS. -_-
  • 1 0
Just like that MOVIE about SLAVERY: ROOTS
  • 1 2
looks nice but i hope they get rid of those all black forks with that raw color frame still think my name was better lol the dartmoor beast dh or the dartmoor beast come on think about it !!!!!
  • 1 0
Congrats to the winner!!! Name sounds great. But I must admit, the suspension design of the frame looks a bit like lapierre froggy and spicy, except for the Dropout area.
  • 1 0
this is a linkage driven single pivot, those two are four bar!
  • 2 3
Shitty name for shitty company. All the names had nothing to do with freeride. Polish company giving frame to foreigners, traitors! Dont expect any support in the future. If you like Scotland so much.. GTFO out of here, and stay there. PS. Im selling my set of wheels, they are made on Dartmoor hubs. I dont want to deal with them anymore, again.
  • 1 0
 dafuq!
  • 4 2

  • 1 0
Damn you Gman, you stole my idea! loljk Congratulations! Buy n Sell soon!! hehe
  • 1 0
I can live with Roots, but I thought there was better. Also very odd to use a word in plural.
  • 1 0
you guys are jealous he won, roots is a good term
  • 2 1
he failed grammar - roots is a plural term...
  • 3 1
I second that. Why is a singular object named using the plural form of the word. In all my experiences, things are named as the singular entities that they are sold as. You don't buy a Specialized Demo 7(S), a Santa Cruz Nomad(S), a Dodge Viper(S) because the grammar is incorrect. I would be interested to know how many consumer products in this type of market have plural names. If Roots is the name they want then it should be called the ROOT.

"Hey man, what do you ride?"
"A Roots." ???

Something to think about. Anyway, congrats to the winner. Enjoy the hell out of your new bike!
  • 1 0
Still if it gets changed to root from roots it was the original idea, everyone makes mistakes
