DH1 Likely Cancelled, Redbull Media House Tackles World Cups

by Fraser Britton
Dec 16, 2011

AIGLE, Switzerland (transcendmagazine) -- Rumours are lighting up email boxes everywhere this morning that the alternative DH1 race circuit proposed by Freecaster owner Raymond Dulieu is likely cancelled. This coincides with word coming out of our european sources that Redbull Media House will be taking over direction and live broadcasts of all MTB world cup events. Smaragd will reportedly still be doing the actual production work as in years past.
dsfv
Dulieu recently gave an interview to french magazine Velovert, and stated that if Redbull were to take over the broadcasts, he would not want, or have the ability, to compete.

As of this time we haven't been able to get in touch with representatives of any of the parties involved. DH1 has been pushing for venues and sponsors to jump on board up until just a few days ago via social media, so the moves does come as a surprise if it is the case.

Just in case you hit your head and forget where you are the kind Swiss folks have put in some rather permanent reminders. Photo by Fraser britton

UPDATE: Raymond Dulieu of Freecaster has had this to say:
bigquotesIf it is confirmed that red bull will now finance and produce a full HD coverage of the UCI world cup I'll have to consider wether we haven't then ultimately achieved our goal of secure excellent coverage for DH MTB and DH1 might then have served its purpose. In any case for red bull to consider MTB is greatly do to Freecaster fantastic work to put it back in the public eye.

Pinkbike's Take: When Redbull do something, they do it right. We're willing to bet that we'll see free online coverage next year, keeping smiles on the faces of many diehard race fans who stay up late into the night to see all of the action. Expect quite a few HD cameras, as well as a good chance of Rob Warner to staying put with a mic in hand, given his ties to Redbull. While the DH1 series sounded promising in many ways, and we're sad to see it not come to fruition, many teams will exhale a sigh of relief at the thought of not having to attend a competing race series.

Everyone likes a scapegoat. In many DHers' minds it's the UCI. Yes their event management can suck at times, frontloading the cost onto the resort. Yes they cancelled 4X - a decision that it must be said, from a pragmatic point of view, made sense - not much of a burgeoning grassroots scene, not enough top athletes in both genders and didn't merit the spend and exposure to have a world series, but it still pissed off plenty of fans. But, as the collapse of DH1 shows, and, despite DH fans denying it and pretending it's not the case, downhill mountain biking needs the UCI. We're a tiny niche, even in the MTB market, never mind cycling at large, and the financial bulk that the UCI gives DH is absolutely vital. Without them I doubt any brand or sponsor would see a financial incentive in shelling out for a world series, there's no way DH could sustain such a big and popular World Cup circuit without the UCI.

In the bike industry, as in most, money talks. And DH is financially irrelevant in the grand scheme of cycling.

You guys can rage against the UCI like a moody teenager in a huff with his parents all you like, it ain't going to change reality. UCI has the dolla. DH doesn't. I don't like it any more than you, but the sooner everyone realises this the better.

How does this show the UCI has taken any steps to anything? Redbull decided to stump up the money freecaster couldn't. If they pull out or don't want to renew next year DH will be back where it was 2 months ago.

 Matt
With respect Matt, just think about what you have written for a minute.
"How does this show the UCI has taken any steps...?"....... possibly by renegotiating the deal for TV rights for the UCI world cup. They have secured a larger organisation than freecaster that is highly likely, given their track record, to bring the sport of DH racing to more people than freecaster have done over the past three seasons perhaps.
"Redbull decided to stump up the money freecaster couldn't"...... Red Bull do not "stump up money" for no reason. They take business decisions, and given their track record, damned good ones. Another way of looking at it is the UCI differentiated the market by upping the price and in doing so gave the industry the message that the DH series now has added value and thus is more attractive. It seems to have worked has it not?
"If they pull out or ..... 2 months ago" ..... so how is this different to if freecaster had bid for the rights? Anyone could pull out you know; there are no guarantees in this world.
I seriously fail to see how anyone can think getting Red Bull on board is a step backwards.....

People seem to have forgotten the ban on sponsors on WC jerseys, the skinsuits, the rocky roads saga, the world cup drama. There were threats to burn down their offices a few months ago there was so much hate and now everyone is happy with the UCI just because Redbull saved the day?

Gutted DH1 didn't take off like the FMB world tour, dependance on the predominantly road orientated UCI is a bad for us.

flag kev-roberts (Dec 17, 2011 at 15:30)
Matt.... you really don't have a massively valid point, the reason the us is "predominantly road orientated" is because that is the largest market, DH as pointed out is a niche market (speaking from experience) as i'm studying business management and finance in uni, Large companies or organisations tend to not focus all of their spending power on the niche market as it is less likely to make as much money for them to re invest, compared to the tour de france which brings in so much money from sponsors, tv rights, entry fees etc. it makes 100% total sense for the UCI to focus on the "lycra clad road dominated cycling"

personally, Red Bull could do wonders if they do this right, and looking at the past they generally tend to do them right, look at all of their sports men and women/teams.... 2 formula one teams, red bull x fighters, WRC sponsorship.... do i really need to point out any more ?

the perfect equation is: Rob Warner + Amazing racing like last year + Red Bull = DH becoming a big success!

So in certain ways we can say that although DH1 never actually made it to become a real event, it still did more in the mountain biking world for bringing it to a more main stream level compared to what UCI did in all its years having world cups? Pretty funny how they UCI can make this happen when another race series was about to take them out yet they didn't do it all these years beforehand...
  • + 3
flag orientdave (Dec 16, 2011 at 17:46)
There is very little actual evidence to support that idea in my opinion.

Neither is there any evidence to suggest the opposite view that the UCI kicked out freecaster because the UCI knew that in order to bring this blue-ribbon gravity event to the masses via mainstream broadcasting, freecaster was not the answer; they needed a larger organisation to help fulfill their role as promoter of the sport. They decided to up the ante, took a risk by not playing safe with freecaster again on another contract and it has paid off. Big time. Red Bull! Well done the UCI.

At this stage, that could though be argued to be equally plausible. We don't know, however, if that were to be the case then well done the UCI. It would only be dogma that may stop some of us from this time holding up our hands and saying "You know what, this time the UCI has done something truly worthwhile".

Never forget we hear teams/managers/riders repeatedly saying the UCI WC is the most important event and that it comes first. Maybe, just maybe the DH1 series pushed the UCI into action, but it appears to me that they took the first step themselves by deciding to try and shake things up themselves.

flag coralcorn (Dec 16, 2011 at 19:43)
Your last point about the DH1 pushing UCI into action is what I am trying to get across to.. We can't say what really happened behind the scenes but its apparent that when DH1 brought competition to UCI it made sure that UCI got its shit together, can't deny that. Thankfully they did more then just get their shit together!

Red Bull has enough money to invest into the UCI for free broadcasts. They're smart enough to know that if the UCI does better through their highly improved live casts, then they do better as well. Imagine if it got picked up by television programs? It's the reason why Red Bull invests in other sports with events such as the Rampage. Also if they're hosting the videos, they're the ones who profit from tons of views. Personally I can't wait!

With all the announcements at the end of the season he decided to do something about it and bring us DH1. This may not happen now, but as he said himself it might just have been what was necessary to bring someone like Red Bull into the sport as a larger sponsor to cover the events and keep it free for the fans.

Dam it was looking fwd to the Freecaster series, I just hope this is not a way of stuffing up a rival series that potentially could take DH where it should be World Class.

So I hope Red Bull helps grow the sport and increase the number of rounds, the sports needs to go to the next step, not being held back by a lack of visionaries with lycra panties.

I don't mind paying for it if we get that.

I do feel for Freecaster they helped bring DH back through the exposure and proved if you build they will come..
I hope they still go ahead I think they would be successful as long as they are innovative and bring real tracks and better locations than the UCI currently do and also in the window the UCI so badly neglects.

Just do it Raymond Dulieu, don't back down now!!

I don't understand why Raymond is giving up so easily, he must not have secured any big sponsors yet. He says he can't compete with Red Bull, but I don't think he has to. The races are on different weekends so there is no direct competition, I think almost as many fans would still watch the DH1 races. DH racing is blowing up, there should be more high-level races for both the racers and fans.

Don't give up Raymond, you can still make this work! We want more racing, 8 races a year is not enough.

IF it all goes well i could see red bull just doin its own events and saying so long to the uci. Look at ama supercross for example its not a world championship but it has the top athletes in the world competing, why cause thats where the big money is. Racers will leave the uci to race a independent series if the cash reward is higher and there sponsors will be happier cause red bull is a house hold name and the general public is attracted to the events so the possiblity of a larger global audience is there making it more appealing to all parties.Red bull is also awsome at giving people what the want so im sure the races will be free to all and rob will be back screaming.

I have actually meet and had a long conversation with the head media production guy of Redbull Xfighters and I don't know if he will do the other events but I know what's in their thinking. Firstly they always produce first rate tv, which is great, but the downside is they generally restrict/control the amount of other media access. In a stadium this is easy but on a hill side harder, so that aspect of it probably wont change much. ( I have been as media to X-fighters many times). the branding though will be controlled heavily and there will be a reason every logo is in the place it's in. However MTB can rest assured that the main aim will be to make sure people know about these events. Redbull love it when main stream media pick up the stories. So they produce media in a way that is consumable for all, 1) the fan 2) the normal people of the world who don't know about it. So they will have traditional feeds plus for sure videos produced afterwards that cater to the "extreme" elements of it. Although people worry, if Redbull do their work as well as they do at X-fighters the viewers will benefit for sure.

Plus they need a story or Drama in it so they will for sure be good back stage stuff as well. In all Redbull will produce a good show, but the way it is on the ground may change a bit, as they exert their view on the organisation. In the long run though more people will like MTB.

This could just be a feeler for red bull to see how the industry will react it might bit of a gong show season but if red bull decides it wants dh it will get the series the teams and the riders and the uci will be Powerless to do so.  I had a feeling the DH1 series wouldn't work out. I was surprised when they released their event calendar and most of the dates were just dates with no solid venues. The lack of new info about the series in the last couple of months wasn't very promising either. I agree with Pinkbike's take, its too bad that it didn't work out but it should make things easier for teams already committed to the UCI series.

to cancel dh1 , that means less races . would still be sick to have 2 series with the all the top riders .Like Gwin could be DH1 and UCI World cup Champion.

flag fraserbritton Plus (Dec 16, 2011 at 14:08)
Wouldn't happen. None of the top teams would commit. They would likely have done one or two races each that fit into their travel schedules. Too many races burn out athletes and stretch budgets too thinly.

flag Protour (Dec 18, 2011 at 11:43)
That post is a load of bull crap how did it get any props? First of all, two major teams had committed to the entire series, and other teams indicated they would attend some of the races. Any pros that lived near the race venues also would have gone to the DH1 races. So there would have been a decent turnout at the races, especially since the purses would be bigger than World Cup races.

More races might stretch budgets, but it also gives the sport and the sponsors more publicity, which is the whole point of them going to races. You have to spend money to make money.

Your last point about racers getting burned out is absolutely ridiculous. There are only 8 big races a year most pro racers compete at in DH. Most of the year they aren't even racing. Compare that to the much more physically grueling sport of motocross, where the racers race practically year-round, racing up to 40-50 races a year, doing practice, qualifying, and at the outdoor races racing in two mains in one day, hour long each, sometimes in 100 degree weather in full moto gear. They don't get burned out, they get faster and they love what they do. DH racers can handle at least another 8 races a year, and their skills and the sport of mountain biking would both benefit.

Pro DH racers have so much time off that most of them will ride their moto during off season....I don't think that adding a few races to the world cup calendar would burn out those athletes....

To be honest i think this is great, because as said in the article, "when Red Bull do something they do it right", however it would be nice to see more than just the world cups, like the DH1, and it would be nice to see DH1 and the UCI world cup coincide instead of competing. Cant thank Red Bull enough for the amount they put into sport, not just cycling but all sports, they have hugely unique events that bring in alot of revenue for the sport and bring it to the public's eye, think Red Bull Gold Mine, Rampage ect ect. It Will be sad if freecaster dont show anything, but i doubt they will disapear all together, i expect there to still be some footage on their site, especially now they've joined the Extreme brand. These are very interesting times, but either way next year will be a smasher!

the issue for red bull, is is it worth it. i hope they think it is, buy the uci, shut them down, and set off rad tour de france events with watson gaps all the way up....

I think this is great news, having a big sponsor will greatly increase the sports standing, and will make other sponsors sit up and take note potentially investing/sponsoring themselves.
