Canadian prices seem high as products are always less in the USA it seems. Tough to compete with the US vs. Canadian retails.

i have bought over $16,000 worth of bikes and swag from Dunbar in the last year and a half and my discounts and deals have saved me easily $2000 plus...follow up service almost always had me up and running with little or no downtime, and best of all they put up with me [ i practically live there ] and my bad jokes and 'gussied up' riding stories; PLUS, where else can you find TWO trail doggys [ Ozzie & Loops ] that will high 5 for a treat....DUNBAR ROCKS!!!

Hey jcinkits, I've met you in store a couple of times - I'm the teaching assistant Aussie who gets paid 1/3 of minimum wage Smile

(back on topic) I'll vouch for the quality of service at Dunbar Cycles. I am salivating over the posibilities here: a mega online Jenson USA type online store (they have a great rep in Aus anyhow) combined with a LBS which will provide quality service and support for the products they sell - its the best of both worlds - save money AND get the service and buying local karma!

sorry australia, can't remember you, but then again it's harder to remember things when your a 100 years old...in fact if i take the time to remember the actual discounts i got from Dunbar it is more like 3 or 4 grand plus. anyhoo...just got my ride back from Dunbar [ a few upgrades, a tune-up and a rebuild after a new paint job ] and am now gonna go for a rip on the shore and if it's closed Burnaby MT. looks good [by the by, i have bought a Devinci Hectic 2, Devinci Hucker, and a Devinci Frantic 2 from Dunbar and i may buy another Hucker from them next year, and not only will i get another great deal on the price but great service...did i mention great service.

It's about time more Canadian retailers go online. I still can't figure out why it's cheaper for me to buy stuff from Chainreactioncycles.com in England though.

flag tiggerwantstobike (Nov 23, 2009 at 19:56)
CRC is actually in Northen Ireland... kinda gets reallly annoying when anything in the UK .people always say its in England. coz no offence.. but 70% of Mtbing is out of england and mostly in Scotland and Wales. apart from Dirt Jumping. any Mtbing to do with hill is definately most likely NOT in England

i can get all cheaper prices from my local lbs... it will take them time to get competitive with the big online retailers.... cuz even with taxes and shipping it is very hard to beat chainreaction.com and Jenson on some stuff...ie i bought a 2010 giro xen out of the states and it was $89 after every thing!!!!... but its better to buy in canada

yep, and pricepoint.com sells carbon fiber tld helmets for as low as 219.00 Last time I enquired about one of those in a shop was in Prnce George and they wanted 600.00 I don't care what the ecxhange rate is it's no excuse for trippling the price. Volume always equals better prices. Lets face it folks, bike shops are geat for one time items that don't lend themselves to buying online, ie shoes, bars, saddles, some clothes but for most of it online is the way to go. I was in a shop in Vernon a few weeks ago and was lookin at a pair of oury grips. Guy wanted 45 bucks plus tax. They are 16 bucks online. Jeeesis theyr made for 2.50 in China anyway... Lets see if Dunbar becomes a Canadian price leader or if they are just trying to cut out the overhead by going digital...

Antron, The prices are in Canadian funds, not US like you are used too. If you ever read a UK magazine, you'll think their prices are lower too until you do a dollar value conversion. It's all relative to your dollar in your country.

So I have had a chance to look at the online site. Prices are WHACK. Period. Maxxis tires are 64 bucks in the "smokin deal category", when they are 29 bucks at beyondbikes.com right now and they want 2199.00 for a fox 40RC2 which is on pricepoint.com for 1299.00 as we speak. Anyone from Dunbar care to explain why (after cutting out the middle man) your prices still DOUBLE and TRIPPLE what they are accross the border? As I write this the exchange rate has just hit a multi-month high of .97 cents on the dollar, so don't even try to use that as an excuse... So as far as I'm concerned that Fox 40rc2 should be selling for 1337.97(1299.00 X 1.03) I would really like someone from Dunbar to comment here... Seems to me all you guys did was cut out the middle-man to up the margins whithout passing any savigns on to the consumers...

Hey CJL1. I just went online to beyond bikes and checked their Maxxis tires at $68 USD for 3C minions!! Not sure you are comparing the same tires??? Beyondbikes has the Fox 40's at $1600 usd, and Pricepoint has the 2010 Fox 40's listed at $1600 as well, not $1299 as you had put in your comment. As for your comment about cutting out the middle man, we haven't! The middle man still is there. What we have done is lowered our prices as much as our distributors will let us in order to help you get your stuff at the lowest possible price!!

I'm not blasting anyone personally, just want to make that clear. Perhaps it's even the manufactures who arbitrarily set the MSRP higher for CDN retailers. I know they do for the auto industry. Cars are 30%more in Can that accross the border. It got so bad for a while that CDN dealerships refused to honour warranties from cars purchased in the states!! I would really love to support a Canadian online retailer, that would really make me a happy consumer. But it's hard to argue with the facts. Read my above posts and you will find 2 other recent examples of "CDN price gouging". Even the examples you gave... Perhaps I was not comparing apples to apples with tires, but on the fork? The one on your site is in fact 37% more expensive than the exact same thing online US... I know someone is going to comment here that it is only for sale to US address, but all it takes is an uncle with a vacation place in Scottsdale AZ... !! Anyway sorry guys this one guy who keep supporting the US economy till I see some fair numbers.

To get the fork into Canada legally, you will have to pay duty. The Fox 40 is made in the US, that means you don't have to pay duty, if you live in the US. I think if you did a proper comparison on everything we have up on our site site, you will find that we are more than competitive!!
  • + 1
flag CJL1 (Jan 11, 2010 at 20:29)
Since when is duty 37%? I though there was this little thing called the free trade agreement? And thats my point. Why is it that Fox has set it's US price at 1600.00 and it's CDN price at 2200.00 and told all the US retailers not to ship the DRAMATICALLY cheaper ones to Canada? Obviously to protect the much fatter margins that we stupid Canuck consumers are willing to dish out for the exact same product. I know you guys and PricePoint are making practically the same damn margins on them... Price point is doing so well they are even throwing in a free headset!

Ok, I'm officially on a mission here... I've done some more "reasearch" and this is a direct apples to apples comparison for all items listed. I know this will prob get deleted but we'll just have to see... 2010 TLD Peaty Carbon D3, Pricepoint price 404.98 DB price 599.99, total of 48% more expensive. 2010 661 Vopor Pressure suit, PP price 139.98, DB price 259.95 thats an 85% price increase(practically double here folks). 2010 fox RC4 rear shock, PP price 614.96 with spring, DB price 814.95 thats 32% more expensive. 2010 TLD Ruckus Jersey 3/4 sleeve, PP price 44.98, DB price 64.98 thats 44% more expensive. Are we seeing a trend here?? Can someone pls explain to me why we are all taking in the pooper as CDN consumers?? Again prob not DB fault, I know from having buddies who work at bike shops that all this stuff is priced according to whats in the "catalogue". But someone needs to examine the flippin catalogue... Again nothing personal to anyone who works at DB just voicing my opinion.

Just to give you an idea what duty actually is... for each pair of 5.10 shoes we bring across the border, we pay $25, exactly 37%. Not much we can do about that!! If you want to go on a rampage to someone, go after the government!! Free trade was a lie! We are trying to get you your gear for as little as possible. If you want to attack someone, go after those responsible, not us, we are doing the best we can.
