Have you ever thought about competing in Trials World Cup (and other high profile events)? Why didn't you choose this path of career?
  • + 27
I grew up on the Isle of Skye which is a long way away from the UK competition scene. I'm not a particularly competitive person, only with myself...but I do love watching what those guys do on those bikes
  • - 2
Danny. Thanks for the photo at fort William! You are f*cking wicked! I'll never forget the 1st time I saw ya on a DVD... Front flipping off a wall onto grass. From stand still? Wtf? Your Sumat else! I hate trials. But you do make it a different sport!

What is the most difficult trick you ever learned (What was the toughest to get down)?
  • + 74
one of the tricks that took the most gos in Imaginate was front flipping from the exercise ball onto the railway tracks, that took about 300 takes
  • + 7
always good to see the pros also admitting that they struggle sometimes Smile

Thanks for the reply! That was the most impressive stunt in the entire video. I was blown away!

Do you consider yourself fully recovered?
  • + 16
The recovery from my back operation has been a long slow process, I still get physio every week and go to the gym to keep my body in as good shape as possible - enough to keep me on my bike!
  • + 3
What was the specific injury that you had?
[Reply]
  • + 5
 Danny question about your brake choice;

It seems a lot of the pure trials guys run the HS33 in the rear; an instant on-off switch. I'm just curious why you choose to run a disk in the back? It sure looks like it gives you the power you need but do you ever worry about it slipping with some of the high torque maneuvers?
[Reply]
  • + 6
What type of bike did you start doing tricks on? I want to start trials riding but don't know if my bike is suitable! (and I don't have enough spare cash to buy a trials bike!)
  • + 14
The first bike I started doing tricks on was a Raleigh Burner, but the first mountain bike i had that you'd consider a trails bike was a Kona Fire mountain 97, you can ride trails on any mountain bike

Which part of the video did you have to try the most?
  • + 14
Doing the flare off the 5 of Diamonds, ended up being the most mentally challenging ones in Imaginate, in the beginning I really struggled to land the flare back into a single card so we ended up extending it to double the width. It should have been a trick that was easy but because we were filming day after day for some reason it ended up getting to me mentally

 Amazing video, Danny!

Lots of cool ideas, but what ideas of yours had to be scrapped in the final video? I thought I saw in your brainstorming sketches an elephant to be apart of the Imaginate vid. Are you saving that for your next video?

Cheers.

Hey Danny love the new vid, Just wondering whats your fav trick in the vid, hardest trick? Is the F1 car full size? I gotta say the bouncing on the ball then landing on the tracks was rad! That fall at the end looked nasty hope ya backs still ok. Big question now is whats next for Danny??? Whatever it is good look an keep up the good work
  • + 9
I did a step up from a mini kicker onto an 11 ft high stack of boxes, when running up to it it definitely didn't look possible - but it felt amazing to pull off.
[Reply]
  • + 7
What is the hardest thing of being professional athlete? And what do you do to get over those things?
  • + 11
Hardest thing for me to deal with is injury over the last few years. I find that a lot of my own riding time is taken up with injury and when I'm healthy I dive straight into a big project. I'm hoping this year to get back to 100% and get plenty of my own time to get out riding with my headphones in.

  • + 6
You ever thought of trying downhill? And how do you get that sort of balance?!
  • + 12
I ride downhill from time to time but it usually involved getting the first aid kit out at the end of the day! I definitely don't practise balance, that just comes from riding a lot.

You have came so far, and taken biking to a whole new level, you have done so much unimaginable stuff, yet you are the most down to earth person ever? I spoke to you at the new bike shop in linlithgow and actually questioned me about where i was riding the day before! Thanks!!

  • + 2
How many times in one session would you attempt something that you can't land, before leaving or do something else? And i also hear you think downhill is too crazy? surely that's not true... a lot of the stuff you do i think is even crazier than a lot of downhill

 hey Danny
great vid!
I am a trials rider with a bmx influence, and Ive always wished I could change gears on the fly without having to worry about a flopy chain when in my trials gear.
Im sure you know what Im talking about. pedaling at 100rpm is not a very fun alternative either.

Have you ever had a chance to try out truvative hammerschmidt cranks?
I tried a set on an all mountain bike, and they really got me thinking
the hammerschmidts have two internal gears, while on a single chainring.
I my mind this could solve chain tension problems for people who ride trials, but also want/need to go fast, or need to ride distance. Also, the change between gears is instant, which is awesome! no need to peddle the chain up or down on to a different gear.

I know that this product was not made with trials riders in mind, and im sure the frewheel mechanism likely lacks the engagement points and strength needed for trials torpue. but...
I think it would be awesome if a company developed this product or something similar with trials in mind.
I am curious what your thoughts are on this issue.
I have seen you make due with trials gearing, but do you think different gear options would help your riding?

You should tour America for your next video. Go to purpose built places and not use them at all in the way they were built for.

 Hi,
Have you ever "imaginated" to create a video wich can catch million of people on just a few months of preparation?
I think it's one of the best videos created on MTB world. We know that it happened just after a very hard injury, and maybe this video will be the reason you will be remembered for a lot of years.

Thanks Danny!

Hi Danny, thanks for being an inspiration and role model to my kids Shepard (4) and Griffin (6). Funny enough they play with toy bikes and blocks and your Imaginate video made it all come to life...where can we find your schedule? Any plans to visit Vancouver/Whistler soon? It would be great to have a chance to say hi and thanks in person...

Have you ever snapped an inspired frame?
  • + 11
Yes I snap plenty of prototypes, but we're finally getting to the stage where it can take the abuse I give it and not have catastrophic failure
[Reply]
  • + 1
I have been working on riding railroad tracks for a few months, which is a rather difficult endeavor (we won't even discuss your standing tail whip to the opposite track). What is your best advice on mastering that balance (ie - line of sight, body positioning over frame, etc.)?
[Reply]
  • + 1
How does it feel to have completely changed the way bike videos are made? That concept was genius and so reminded me of my childhood and imagining the crazy things I would do on a bike when I grew up. When I was 8 my best friend jumped 11 people behind the gym on his Yamaha full suspension bicycle circa 1974, this and Evil Knievel had me doing this type of thing in my head! It was like you had the same dream as me, but on steroids!

Hi Danny you're my favourite rider, I'm a artist and a street trials amateur, now I'm drawing your old orange inspired skye, as real as possible I will share to you when I'll done it, I will be the most happy guy in the world if you respond, because i'm a huge fan, my tumblr is based on you, as you can see, fxr179.tumblr.com I'm trying to earn some money just to buy a inspired skye like yours... I love your bike I hope you enjoy the drawing when I'll done it...

You are an amazing rider danny, and the best thing you have i think it's your positivity aside of biking skills! Best of luck all the way, and i have a question, if it's not too late:
Do you ever ride downhill, and aside of trail biking, what kind of mountain biking do you prefer the most ?
[Reply]

What is it about trials that you enjoy more than other types of bike riding?
  • + 5
I love riding my trails bike because I feel like i can ride any kind of terrain, whether it's riding natural rocks or logs, or to ride in the street. it's just the type of riding that appeals to me
[Reply]

 Hi Danny,
I love your videos! You are my hero! you have got to be the best rider in the world! I just brought a inspired skye frame kit and its amazing! I noticed that you have a blue one now (looks great btw!). What do you do with your old bikes and frames? Do you have a massive garage or something? Smile

Danny that was freaking amazing. I kept thinking, "Is this real?" Toy theme brilliant! It totally took me back to being a kid.

What's your favorite way to mend after a hard day of riding?

What's your favorite food when in California?

If you got to ride in a classic horror film set which one would it be?

Danny you're truely amazing and what you can do on a bike inspires what can be possible in life. Best wishes healing and thanks for blowing my mind!

Who is the biggest inspiration for you? What is your favorite spot to ride? Do you think you could top imaginate?
  • + 11
One of the riders that has inspired me the most has to be Chris Akrigg. I love the way he attacks lines but also makes them look smooth. One of my favourite spots has to be the rocky carpark in the centre of Aviemore, it's the place where I first learnt how to do some of the basic tricks I do in my videos today. I hope to push my riding to where I think it should be in the next few years.
[Reply]

[Reply]
  • + 3
What are your thoughts as soon as you fail landing a trick for the first time? How do you keep pushing yourself?
  • + 10
Usually the hardest thing doing the big tricks is throwing yourself over the edge to try the trick in the first place. By the time you've actually gone over the edge and had a crash at the bottom, you're in a much better place to get back up and pull it properly

I've really enjoyed and been amazed by your riding and videos. I've never done any trials riding, but started out on freestyle bikes as a kid. I'd like to get into trials, but I'm not sure where to start. I'm a typical mountain biker at home on technical terrain and some jumps, but rarely do any tricks/stands/hops. How would you recommend someone like myself get started?

Cheers, and thanks!

It's just the same as manualing a hard tail, you just have to work at finding the right balance point, and trying not to get caught up between the back wheel and the saddle
