The 2013 Kamikaze Bike Games, a five day bike festival that includes racing in nearly every discipline, are underway at Mammoth Mountain, California. Dual slalom, enduro, speed and style, downhill, and cross-country racing will all be taking place, along with return of the Kamikaze, the classic, wide open and flat-out downhill race from the early days of the sport. Over $10,000 in prize money is up for grabs for the top competitors. A number of the athletes known for their wild rides on the infamous Kamikaze course have returned to where it all began, including Brian Lopes, Leigh Donovan, Mercedes Gonzales, Greg Herbold, and many more.

bigquotesIt's good to be back here. When I dropped in on Kamikaze today, I just couldn't help but start sprinting. All the old memories of the course came back to me. I think it's cool to be able to race the course on modern bikes and I feel even faster than before on my 29'er. - Brian Lopes

Wow, some names in this article I haven't heard for a long time! What happened to HB! I guess "HB's school of cross training" (see ReTread) is no longer on his to do list. Unbelievable taht alot of these people still are involved in the sport and awesome too. Stick in JT and Hans Ray and a few others like MIssy, and that would be a list of my youth hero's all over!

Leigh Donovan looks to be working a draping blouse to hide how big her stomach's gotten also.

Oh my God! Giovanna Bonazzi is the same as 23 years ago (except for the blond hairs). Hello Gio!!!
Where's Missy Giove???
Super event, the History of DH racing.
  • + 3
Nah...she just got home detention and probation. Even that was 2 years ago. Maybe she is just too wild for this bunch.
  • + 1
Yes, you're right, I've forgot. Home detention, I've red it on the Dirt interview. She's still in detention, I don't think she would miss such an event. She's the wilde child but she's also nostalgic of her magic moments I guess.
  • + 1
Crossing state lines could be breaking her detention/probation rules. If she's lucky enough to avoid jail time, why would she risk giving that up? OR maybe she asked and was denied.
  • + 1
Its "supervised Home release", probation with a tracking anklet in other words, and a curfew. She'd have needed her probation officer AND a judge to sign off on her leaving her state to be able to attend the race.

Giovanna the fastest woman on a mountain bike on an ice slope!!!!! and world DH champion, a ver very nice and sweet lady, I traded national jerseys with her in the world championship in Chateau D´Oex and still use it ever once in a while and Mercedes world motocross champion and a great DH racer.

Lots of good memories.

please say hi to them if possible

Missy said in Dirt Rag "if you think I was wild and loose (riding) back then they should see me now". I'd love to see her in a LEGENDS of DH race. Queue the ambulances at the finish.
