bigquotesIt came down to Watt's and I. He is one of my best friends and I wanted to beat him. He told me the trophy was a slayer guitar. I tail whipped the drop and landed a little off the line. I had to bunny hop the gate and pedal as fast as I could to make up time, but it wasn't enough. Stoked for Greg! - Tyler McCaul

bigquotesFeels amazing! Especially having the year I did with all the injuries and set backs, it feels good to know I still got it. Building the course and setting everything up was quite an experience and I'm glad all the riders and fans enjoyed themselves. Speed and style is the future! - Greg Watt's

Miles Rockwell would have crushed Lopes and there there would have been the sound of high pitched whinning to follow.
  • + 2
Still got a autographed poster from Myles in my shop from winning worlds back in the day. He should have been at this event!
  • + 5
I wish he would have. Now Lopes gets to gloat about winning a racing against people who have long since retired and free up sponsorship dollars for younger racers, instead of being a leech and sucking the system dry by hoping from sponsor to sponser and burning the last one on the way out the door. I gaurantee that rockwell would have rocked lopes, well. Pretty sure M.R. can park a vehicle better too.
  • + 1
Love how all the armchair quarterbacks here bashing on Lopes. He beats racers half his age still and would probably destroy most people on this blog. Is he a bit of a prick, yes. But most hyper successful people are.
  • + 9
You're right, he is a prick.
  • + 2
He is a whining f**kwit. Only 'top' guy i've seen regularly and openly dissing other riders on vids and such when they beat him or he gets knocked off in a 4x race. Wearing a f**king skinsuit as well to squeeze any advantage he could. Clearly a very good rider but not a nice person!

Awesome pics, I hope the Kamikaze becomes an annual event and the legends keep coming back, and maybe Rockwell and the missle can make it along with JT. It's a unique downhill race and it has so much history, hope I ride it someday. I wonder who would win if all the big guns were there? My money would be on Peaty or Minnar.

FIRST off respect to Lopes, the guy is an f'n legend! BUT I had to pick the fastest guy on this course out of the current crop.. Jared Graves FTW.
  • + 4
SECOND off respect to the guys on the tandem dh bike, that looks gnarly!

I remember seeing Cam McCaul doing a superman off the last jump at the NORBA nationals dual slalom in Big Bear back in 2004 maybe? on his Ellsworth. That guy was speed and style before speed and style even existed.
  • + 3
 Word up on that son!

That would be cool if they spent the same amount effort as they did building these one off courses as they did on building permanent trails this year.

"Tom Rogers with a 52 tooth chain ring."

^^^^^^^^^^
This picture blows my mind. That outer ring is bolted directly into the inner.

Was this a common practice back in the day?

Also, I haven't read all the text following this event. Is retro-wear mandatory among the old schoolers participating? Very cool.
  • + 8
No, back then all of the chainrings were 110mm bolt circle diameter so it was easy to mount large rings directly to the outer spider. I used to run a 54 when I raced at Mammoth and saw many bigger than that.
  • - 4
Nope, that is a hack job. The ring was probably off a road bike or something and didn't fit the spider. He must have made custom chainguide plates as well.
  • + 4
 No, I ran a 52t on my bike for a while...crazy considering I run a 30t single ring setup now...hah.
  • + 2
Top pros like John Tomac and Jimmy Deaton ran 63 tooth sprockets back then... Back when 3 inches of travel was DH travel!!!

Lopes would wear a skinsuit lol
  • + 9
Lopes would be the only one out there more concerned with winning than having fun. Another interesting fact not posted here, Brian Lopes also once again narrowly beat out HB for the biggest douche of the day award! Congrats guy.
  • - 1
Lopes did have the fastest time of the day.
  • + 1
 Wasn't he on a 29er as well?
  • + 3
Why does everyone hate on lopes..am I missing something?
  • + 3
Skinsuit is par for the course...

To the man with one leg... Your balls must be at least the size of coconuts... Because you only have one leg to throw down if something goes wrong... Props

  • + 7
Tomac would have smoked everyone. Again

And not one comment about the fact that Lopes won on a 29" trail bike - come on pinkbike you're slacking. mwhahahahahahahaha

It's funny, if you look at the Speed and Style pics from a different perspective, most of the photo's look like everyone is just crashing everywhere, with legs flying and bikes facing the wrong way, upside down etc!

Great pic of the SWD - Bicycle Fabrications DH Tandem!!
  • + 9
that would be a sketch fest in my opinion
  • + 7
One man's sketch fest is another man's shred fest.
  • + 2
That was a SWD? Ode to Steve! Legend himself.
  • + 4
not afraid to say i wouldn't get near it w/o full armor on. maybe because all my buddies are psychopaths.
  • + 1
That bike makes me jealous. Would have loved to have that rear suspension coming down shotgun on the xc race. But it was pretty cool to see some other tandem bikes out for the races.
  • + 1
Future winners, Darwin Award, 2013. Such a bad idea.
[Reply]

first race there was on all rigid, suspension was a long way in the future....Last raced in 2000 Giant Team, 60T chain ring hanging in garage.. rode the Kamikaze 2 wks ago, still fast as hell, the vibrations, even with 8inchs of travel
[Reply]

@ Ken Foraker: i ride also with one leg!!! You konw, we are not much to ride like that ;-)

H-Ball was DQ'ed because he cut the course.
  • + 1
He did it again? He should race enduro if he really wants to maximize his skills.

Awwwww, Elmer Fudd & Blossom take the ol' fart kamikaze wins. That's nice. And Greg Watts gets the win on the course HE designed! That's nice. Love Greg Watts. Good job buddy, but the future ain't speed & style, it's slopestyle. Hope to see you in more of 'em.
