The new Elite crank from Profile is almost ready, and it looks sick. Instead of putting the crank arms on a standard 19mm spindle with a crank tool and removing them with a tool and a hammer, this new crank uses a wedge to spread the spindle and keep the crank on. To take it off, simply undo the bolt and pull it off. Easy.

I don't really get the point of casual clipless. Clipless is by definition NOT casual. BMX style pedals + grippy shoes are very casual and perform well, and you don't have to worry about the clickity-clack when walking around or wearing out cleats. Laces on road shoes? Road cleats are terrible for walking around in. Anyone remember SPD sandals?

The idea is that you get some of the squish and extra rolling ability of a 29er or fsus, but without too much loss in efficency. They take a while to get up to speed, but once you do, they're unstoppable. They don't handle too terribly either. The disadvantages of course being that they're heavy as shit and much more expensive than anything else rigid.
  • + 2
flag dom69foco (Sep 20, 2012 at 9:38)
Don't forget the massive grip from all that extra surface area! Those big tires allow really low pressures so good shock absorber too
  • + 1
flag paulskibum (Sep 20, 2012 at 10:22)
I rolled one round a parking lot - they are like perpetual motion machines on tarmac - two pedal strokes and I went round and round and round and they handle really nicely too, a small lean and they just go round corners. I couldnt justify actually buying one but they look interesting - money no object I'd chuck one in the collection and ride it three times a year!
  • + 1
flag hampsteadbandit (Sep 21, 2012 at 11:59)
 @dom69foco

yeah the low pressure, high volume tires are the key to the ability to let you traverse very soft surfaces (be it snow, sand or bog) where a regular bike will not run

I spent a lot of time driving quad bikes (Honda Big Red) on farms on very wet ground where even a 4 x 4 Land Rover or Tractor could not run, and the fat mountain bike uses the same principle in its tire / wheel system

the Honda Big Red 4 x 4 quad bike has so much air volume in those big tires, it will actually float on water!! (which totally shocked me when I was told this by my ATV certificate examiner and then asked to drive the quad across a small pond)

check this out for a wicked fat bike, Hanebrink electric: www.pinkbike.com/photo/6469089

  • + 1
flag ianwmac (Sep 20, 2012 at 14:34)
Its a contraction of split window vans. He's referring to VW vans built prior to 1967 with a split front windscreen (2 windows as opposed to 1). Having said that the use of this contraction might have Colin turning over in his grave.

He was riding for Evil Bikes in 2011 I think? He won with the carbon Evil at Chatel Mountain Style.
  • + 3
flag Da-Moose (Sep 20, 2012 at 2:27)
Mmm no. Evil picked him up in 2011, so why would he ride their bike in 2010 when corsair was sponsoring him?

He ride a corsair dominion in 2010. Look it up. He also got a repainted corsair dominion that he is riding now. Hyper got cam, and Pablo, the designer of corsairs 2010 bikes. Basically the corsair suspension design got picked up by hyper, and corsair is now run by Jim severt "hacksaw" and he uses single pivot tech, but still uses corsair names (konig).

Technically cam is on a 2010 corsair dominion, but because Pablo is hypers designer, hypers DH bike will be very similar to the dominion. In my original statement, I was wondering when hyper would design a new bike, or at least updated 2013 versions of the dominion and cams slope bike (which is also originally corsair, but he rode it last year because evil never made him a slope bike, then he repainted it red).

I also think I read somewhere, that when cam first joined hyper, he needed a hardtail to compete, so he repainted a felt jumpshot and rode that (at first, he probably switched it up later).

  • + 3
flag Lehel-NS (Sep 20, 2012 at 6:02)
If it would be such a bad frame (a k-mart brand, snapping all the time, shitty geo. etc.), I'm pretty sure Cam would not ride it. He's one of the bigger names out there in the freeride scene, he could get a sponsorship with a bigger brand if he wanted to.
