Day Zero - Sea Otter 2013

Apr 18, 2013
by Margus Riga
Day 0 at the Sea Otter Classic - set up day. Day 0 provides a chance to get some candid images of the machinery behind the proverbial bike show curtain. For the most part it's too early to see the polished final product that manufacturers will have on display for the public. What you will see are marketing dudes, road managers, forklift drivers and various crews all hustling to get shit done before dark. Not finishing set up on Day 0 means a super early start to opening day, and that can make for a rough week altogether.

Either way, it all gets finished - enjoy the first nugs from Sea Otter 2013.

Welcome to the 2013 Sea Otter Classic. Thursday afternoon went by with the sounds of motos roaring through the show and putting on quite the entertainment. Booths are being set up and things are getting going at a pretty steady pace.

The reason for the massive upgrade in the pumptrack this year is to get more kids pumped.

Sea Otter 2013 is looking more like a WC stop this year. All the pros are in attendance. If only the DH course was up to par. Itz gunna be sick nasty to the max, no diggity doubt!!!

Well there's a catchy headline! Now please, tell me more!!
  • 1 0
"If it ain't carbon, it's crap. Welcome to the future." Thats pretty much the truth these days. Dang I wish I could go...
  • 1 0
i ride crap!! and i like it!! plus, they don't make a carbon slope bike.
  • 46 5
"If it ain't carbon, it's crap. Welcome to the future."... that's a ballsy thing to say!
As sweet as [many] carbon frames are, not everyone can afford one these days. Perhaps "in the future" they can!
Besides, i freakin love my aluminum frame bike and have no plans going carbon just yet. Just saying!
  • 42 0
That's the nice thing about progression, I can own some pretty amazing bikes and stuff because its considered last years garbage!
  • 17 3
Ill take my 20 dollars to the thrift shop...
  • 11 1
never thought id say this, buttt.. i love 'last years garbage' Wink
  • 10 1
Damn it bmar, now I have that damn song stuck in my head! Thanks. =/
  • 7 2
I love non-CTD suspension. FOX, get it together.
  • 3 0
Speaking of fox... they updated the website today, the new 32 series 650B fork offerings are listed, among other new models (including forks with the electronic damping feature), of course its basically nothing but a sea of CTD... myself, I liked being able to adjust the low-speed compression on the RLC models to exactly where I wanted it, not where Fox California racer boy thinks I should have it.

Hopefully no more Chatter Trail Dive..
  • 1 0
Happy to pass along my misery Baecker. I had just watched an edit with that song. In case it isn't completely stuck in your head yet, watch the James Visser in San Diego video.
  • 1 0
this years gold is next years garbage is how i roll. you could pick up an M9 or demo frame for so low now that the new carbon frames are out.
  • 1 0
I'm wondering what's up with the carbon Specialized road ride with platforms and an XTR rear mech
  • 1 1
 cyclocross?
  • 1 0
nah man, its got slick tires and no one runs platforms on cyclocross
  • 4 5
Sorry Pinkbike, your comment on carbon or crap was just bloody stupid. I can afford carbon and choose not to, Aluminum is still awesome! And by the way always will be!
  • 3 1
@naturechild15: carbon is way lighter, stronger, stiffer, and easier to produce. everyone has their preference and "carbon or crap" definitley doesn't hold true for all disciplines, but most companies have realized that carbon is the way to go.
  • 2 1
im pritty sure that was just a joke...
  • 1 0
naturechild15 is still right, whether he was joking or not. i'll ride carbon if they come out with a -$2000 slope-style bike.
  • 2 1
I would ride carbon but most people cant afford ÂŁ7-10,000 bike
  • 2 0
Walk into the track like "What up, I got a big shock"... Apologies.
  • 1 0
^ rollin in hella deep headed to the mezanine
  • 18 3
Jeez the Carbon Norco looks awesome! More on that please!
  • 7 1
I cant tell but is it 650B?
  • 2 3
Its on crank bros wheels and I don't think there 650b yet are they?
  • 3 1
Can't really tell but the 160mm rotor on the front does look smaller than usual, so my guess is it's 650b.
  • 4 1
It's hard to tell for sure but it looks like the rear tire has a 27 on it for the size
  • 6 7
 Trek jokes in 3... 2... 1....
  • 1 2
ya no i think jill is running 26's i over heard one her conversations at the North West Cup
  • 4 2
 its a 650b
  • 4 0
@EnduroManiac I believe the above conversation is debating if the Norco is a 650b. Not the Kona Carbon Operator.
  • 3 0
The bike looks more like the sight or range killer B carbon prototype.
  • 5 0
Not only does that look like a 650b wheel, but I can read 27 on the Ardent casing.
  • 2 0
The Norco looks sick for sure. And of course CB would have 650B wheels in the works...
  • 1 0
Jill's not exactly tall and the sea otter course isn't really that difficult, so it makes sense for her to ride a new carbon range trail bike. She's probably just the sort of racer who'd wanna get into Enduro racing and that'd be a good bike for her to be doing it on.
  • 1 0
Jill's on carbon 650! CB does have 650 rims but they aren't out til next year in Canada and the US.
  • 1 0
the rear tire is an Ardent 27.5 x 2.2 if you zoom the image its pretty clear
  • 1 0
You guys can read the writing on her tires? Really. Your George Costanza caliber squinters then.
  • 1 0
meh... the wheels look a little big to me...
  • 2 0
those using mobile devices to read pinkbike articles can easily zoom their screens...
  • 1 0
I pedaled that very bike around last weekend... Its a dialed whip
  • 1 0
@StinkyTO: oops, that was a fail! OK let's put the blame on my little daughter who doesn't always let me sleep Wink
  • 7 0
I wonder if the riding on 4/20 will be any slower. Maybe the booths should have snacks, too.
  • 6 0
Anyone else thinking that looks like E.T. behind the curtain in Booth boy shot #2?!?
  • 1 0
Yup. Was my first thought. Specimen.
  • 1 0
Im not trying to be the "looks like a ___" guy but the rear triangle on Kintners norco looks pretty damn close to the new kona. They both look f*cking wet!
  • 3 1
Hmmm... anything not carbon is crap... so... what they are saying is that the rear end of the new Operator is crap? Guess i'll have to start saving for a bike that's not crap like the new v10 Razz
  • 1 0
i was thinling the same Smile
  • 3 0
that also means the carbon demo is crap, must be why gwin lost
  • 1 0
Hmm... good point.. o well, i still like the alu Demo better for some reason, that carbon just looks so flimsy.
  • 1 0
New 650B fox models for 2014...

www.ridefox.com/filter.php?m=bike&t=forks&f1=wheel&v1=27.5&ref=topnav

just to scoop the PB guys at sea otter who will no doubt be posting pictures of them up in the next day or two.

Jill's carbon bike above in the picture has a 34 Talas on it (you can tell its not the 36 by the QR end cap visible on the dropout is the same as QR15 forks run, not the tullio-style 20mm setup the 36s use.
  • 1 0
Did you say king of the wheels? And easton? In the same sentence?
Thats just not true...
How good have their hubs been?
About as crappy as a hub could be? Yes
Many good, proven ways to build a hub and they choose the way that mostly doesnt work.
And how many people bought havocs that they couldnt get spokes or rims for?
Oh yeah thats right its a bike industry marketing article so it means we get lied to.
Write some truth one day...

  • 1 0

I want new front hub. 130x25mm with wide flange spacing to improve stiffness on bigger wheels. Then 157 as a standard for rear wheels on 29ers and 650b. Then X71, X91 and X01.

  • 1 0
 Carbon Aurum? AM I dreaming??
  • 1 0
Yes. because its a carbon 650B model, either a 2014 Range or they'll name it something else, but definitely not an Aurum.
  • 1 0
When are the finals, and where can I see it online?

Sea Otter always looks like such a rad event. Too bad I'm in Australia Frown
  • 1 2
Bender seems to be doing very well and getting a lot of work done for a dead guy. I think I've heard/read 2 or 3 rumors in the last year of him packing it in.

Love the dual slalom, best part of SO, so many sick bikes out this year!
