Today's racing needs little introduction. So without further ado, the first ever day of racing for the Enduro World Series, hosted by Superenduro at Punta Ala in Italy...

There s only one man in mountain biking who could get away with wearing women s pyjamas with beer bottles on them... Cedric Gracia.

Anne-Caroline Chausson arrived at the pits early. Unfortunately today didn t work out too wekk for her a heavy crash on the second stage left her with broken ribs and a trip to the hospital. Anyone who doubts how tough she is just needs to know that she crashed fairly early on in the stage yet still finished her run. Anybody who has broken a few ribs can tell you how much pain she must have been in especially on the most physical stage of the race.

The weather forecasts here in Punta Ala are more or less useless there is only one way to be sure what the weather is going to do and that is head out and take a look. The prognosis for today Good.

They might not look like much but what podiums are made of or how look matters little to races. There s only one important thing - that there is one step higher than the others for the winner to stand above everyone they beat. This one ticks that box and to be sure there are a lot of people hungry to be the one standing on that top step.

How s that for a sight Nico Vouilloz and Steve Peat heading out to race together. As the two of them spent most of their careers going head-to-head we d pay good money to know how that conversation went.

Unfortunately Peaty s conversation with Nico was to be short-lived as he flatted heading out from the pits.

How tough was the climbing today Just ask Dan Atherton... If he s getting off on the steep parts there s little more we need to say.

Today wasn t a good day in the office for Nico Lau. He s one of the riders many people were looking to today but on the second stage there was an ominous gap when he was supposed to arrive. He went down hard at the top of the track and limped down once he d re-composed himself. His bike wasn t so lucky and needed a few spokes replacing to get him back out and running... Next time.

Without Peaty Nico pressed on up alone.

Cedric Gracia looked like a freight train on track today. Unfortunately a snapped chain at the start of the fourth stage left him on foot and running for the stage. Literally running he still finished around 20th in that stage. Luckily Peaty found his chain and then pushed Cedric up one of the transfers making sure he reached the stage on time.

Jared Graves. Third today for Graves. Did anyone ever really doubt that he has the drive to do well at whatever he puts his mind to

The rider you can see just out of focus in the background is Greg Minnaar. Fabien Barel overtook him on track on both the first and second stages. Greg apparently tried to hold Barel s wheel but said he was just too strong.

Jerome Clementz was close today but not close enough. He won the first stage and finished ahead of Barel on the on the fourth but the demoloition job Barel did on the second stage was murder she wrote Barel s win on three just sealed the deal.

Although Greg Minnaar finished outside the top thirty today probably the first time he s done that at any race for a long time it s good for the sport to see riders like him come to these races. Steve Peat. In Formula One they say that the first person you have to beat is your teammate. We re not sure if those rules apply to mountain biking but Peaty pipped Minnaar by just three seconds today.

Brian Lopes was the fastest man on a 29er today coming in a respectable 15 overall. Having seen Brian in practice on some of the stages there s no question of his speed but we would have to ask whether a 29er was the right tool for the job this weekend.

Sixth for Ben Cruz today. We re excited about this partly because Ben is a nice guy and pinned as hell but also partly because we ve been tipping him as one of the frontrunners this year and we liked being proved right.

For our money great athletes are marked not by how they win but how they lose. Jerome Clementz congratulates Barel on the finish line of stage four conceding that Fabien was just too fast for him today. It s a touch of class and we reckon a good footing for this series to start from.

Got love the fact that for SO long, media was saying that 29er will be the future, blah blah blah, and now "questioning as to weather 29er was the right tool for the job".... Suck on them lemons marketing team!
  • 14 1
Well now you have to buy 650b.. till the next product diversification comes up
  • 6 3
Of course a 27.5" won the race.
  • 3 3
I read on facebook that the fastest 29er got 15th and that was Brian Lopes...don't know if it's true but hope so...also the times are way closer than what i expected....dang!
  • 7 1
 for xc... purely.
  • 17 0
Who cares? They're just wheel sizes after all... haha

I'm heartbroken that Anne-Caroline crashed out but it's so tight seeing Fabien at the top of a podium again.
  • 11 1
brian lopes is a class. 120 mm 29er. wonder what result would he get with mojo hd..
  • 10 1
it comes down to the rider, not the wheel size.
  • 24 4
Lopes got robbed by his own sponsor. He would have killed it on a mojo hd.
  • 7 9
@tetonlarry Are you saying that companies force riders to ride their new bikes in races? That might be partly true but I asked pros such as Mitch Ropelato if he was forced to ride the 29er at fontana and he said he chose it cuz it was the best weapon for the job. Specialized doesn't make us ride a bike, they let us choose.

Yes I know Lopes rides for Ibis but based on Lopes' credentials I'd say he chose a 29er
  • 5 0
Not that I care about this whole wheel size debate, but Tracy Moseley was on a remedy 29er
  • 2 0
^ I think it'd be more accurate to see what Anne-Caro was racing on.... haha
  • 2 2
 Well said airsoftesneeto.
  • 6 2
Lopes is running the Ripley 29er because he's PAID to do so - its called marketing.
  • 2 0
Skip to 6:45 for proof that lopes was asked to ride the ripely by ibis.
  • 5 0
Mosely took first on a 29er remedy. Seems it may depend on the rider's tastes and technique. Imagine that.
  • 5 0
Lopes could get top 20 on a tricycle. Just saying.
  • 4 0
They need the 26.5 and the 28 to bridge the gaps that 27.5 and 29 don't fill.
  • 3 0
 garcia has two heads???????
  • 2 0
gRacia has an open helmet on his pack for the liason segments
  • 6 0
Wheel size is now a choice by the rider and what suits them best. A bit like bar width choice, chainring size, suspension fork travel, coil or air shock etc etc. People need to move on and get over this wheel size debate it's now getting very boring
  • 3 2
you guys are really dumb, im studying marketing i know how it works. Its first hand public relations, getting "hype." After watching that interview with lopes he makes it very clear that he was doing it for promotional reasons but he also said that that is where he is at this stage in his career, yeah he is racing but he is mainly there for R&D and marketing. However, its fairly obvious that if he was in it just for the racing he would be on mojo. hands down. Dont mean to piss you guys off, but i mean come on. its an opinion

Find a bike that fits, has enough travel and the right geo for the intended riding and you're set to have a great time. Most people soon forget the wheel size once they are on the trail! I know if I haven't been out on the trail in ages cos of work or injury I get bogged down in gear, and become green with envy of all the new stuff released. However after I get back on the trail I realise that what I already have is awesome, and I probably wont need anything else until it breaks... Or I have a weak moment and fall for the marketing hype.
  • 3 0
 Tracy Moseley was on a 29er wasn't she? www.pinkbike.com/news/Bikes-of-the-Enduro-World-Series.html
  • 3 0
Isn't it amazing, everyone was on a bike? With WHEELS? *mind blown*
  • 1 0
Keene could have rode 26" or 29" and rode the 29 Evo. I don't think Lopes would be any higher up regardless of bike.
  • 1 0
Was it Keene's choice though? How can we be sure? Maybe I'm a conspiracy theorist, but a lot of my theories have ended up being true over the years. To me it just makes sense for companies to have their riders push whatever the current gimmick is in order to increase sales. It also makes sense for the same companies to insist that they are not pushing their riders towards a certain choice. I don't trust industry, and I don't trust marketing teams.
  • 1 0
Well Annie rode the 26" Enduro and Curtis rode the Stumpy not the Enduro so I'd say they have the choice.

I agree that it's good to be skeptical though. I'm very skeptical of 650b.
  • 58 0
Barel overtaking Minnaar, Peaty helping out Gracia on the track, Lopes riding a 29'er. You couldn't make this stuff up. Enduro is the shizzle!!
  • 1 0
Serious. I haven't been near one of these races yet, but I obviously need to...and soon at that!
  • 1 0
"Luckily Peaty found his chain and then pushed Cedric up one of the transfers, making sure he reached the stage on time."
that's the spirit of mountain biking!
  • 25 1
I just like the vibe that this gives off, seems like more people are interested in having fun and conceding to being beat by overall speed. Lots of riders congratulating, riding together, and flowing beer. Good to see an event that all riders can fully appreciate.
  • 2 0
Have you ever been to a world cup DH?, there is a lot of fun, everyone practices runs together, and LOTS of beer. i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02172/Greg-Minnaar_2172487i.jpg
  • 25 0
On one of the photos i thought there was a rider tailgating Gracia... then i realized he had an xc lid strapped to his back :/
  • 5 5
LOL thought the same thing LOL
  • 10 1
 ^LOL
  • 1 0
bummed for zedric but I'm sure he had a lot of fun
  • 1 0
Na... he was doubling one of his mates that had had a mechanical :-)
  • 24 0
Enduro is going to be more interesting than DH soon because of the "old boys" duels, it's great to see legends racing against nowadays champions tup
  • 1 0
Dude, I couldn't agree more. I grew up watching Nico and Peaty duking it out in the 90's and I absolutely love watching the wiley veterans throw down with the fast up and comers.
  • 21 0
 Peaty you legend:
"Luckily Peaty found his chain and then pushed Cedric up one of the transfers, making sure he reached the stage on time."
  • 3 0
No kidding, that's like some Chuck Norris joke but with Steve Peat.
  • 17 0
I'm starting to like enduro more and more, Fabien killed it!
  • 14 0
Enduro world series has got off to an amazing start, cant wait for the videos
  • 13 0
Great result for Joe Barnes!! Smile
  • 5 0
Please more coverage of the woman's as well. We love seeing the pics of the guys and the pic of anne-caro was very welcome (shame AC - heal up quick!). The chicks were racing the same course as the guys so it couldn't be that hard to chuck in a few pics of them as well!
  • 7 0
Stoked to see Blenky up there!! And of course congrats to Fabien and Tracy!
  • 6 0
On my way to Rome after finishing the race. It's been an amazing event racing for hours with these guys. I'll never forget Punta Ala
  • 6 0
Good stuff. I just hope that people will get over the wheel size "war" soon and focus on the racers.
  • 3 0
So here's a couple of questions, what is the etiquette for passing another rider?, does it get Motocross style with a little contact or does the guy in front just let the obviously faster rider go ahead. Also in between stages is there a time limit to get between stages. I also assume that when starting the second stage there riders are staggered by a certain time limit?
  • 1 0
Etiquette here is pretty soft at the moment. When you hear a rider catching you and you realize you're slowing him down you try to find a place out of the common line. When starting the race you're given the times you wil start every stage at. Time starts to run at that precise time, so if you're not there you're adding time to your final result. Normally you want to be at the start of each stage at least a couple of minutes befor to recover and adjust suspensions, helmet, kneeguards and the like. Climbing counts here as it helps you to get fresh to each start.
  • 3 0
I dunno what it is but the old boys seem more suited to Enduro than the young lads. In our series here the 30+ lads are almost always faster than the 19-29s. Maybe a bit of patience and thinking is rewarded more in Enduro than DH?
  • 5 0
 It's called Old Man Strength!
  • 3 0
Old-school guys know how to frickin' pedal!! Smile
  • 1 0
It's called Endur-ance, and a man is at his best for that in his 30s
  • 2 0
seeing some of these top pros getting worked in the enduro brings some credibility to the format, which interestingly, mimics the sort of riding that most mtbers in the universe do. not that it diminishes the the validity of DH, or XC for that matter, but it showcases that each format has its own level of specific athleticism. in all formats, they are all amazing athletes in their particular specialty.
  • 4 1
Considering how many of the top guys went down with mechanicals, looks like it could be a lottery race to race as to who actually finishes. Keep your bike running and you're in with a shot.
  • 4 0
BLENKI 7th !!! Just casually entering an Enduro race and kills it ! Look out WC he's going to be on FIRE !! Where was Nico ?
  • 2 0
 So stoked for him!
  • 3 0
Love this new series, looks like fantastic and super friendly yet competitive event hope Andrea Bruno and Anne-Caroline Chausson get well soon, healing vibes to them
  • 2 0
Of all the crashers today seems like Anne Caro was toughest today. No shock there. Hope she recovers quick enough to get back into the races. Doesn't look good with busted ribs though. . .
  • 1 0
So does 27.5 make a difference? I look forward to running the satistical analysis at the end of the championship to check for significant difference. Either way i don't expect a guge effect size, but would be nice to know if there is any at all.
  • 1 0
 Mechanical are a bitch.

I was riding my 26" all day today.. with good shocks and forks it was better on the same trail than Bronson I tried two weeks ago... But it has 20mm more travel.. I think I want to try having the front only at 27.5..with a lighter fork with 20mm less travel and a slightly smaller tire.. I think that would be a good combo.
  • 1 0
Yea, yr onto somthing there. my mate turned his 29r into a 650Bniner. 29 in front of course, and he loved it!
  • 4 0
 Matt, as always, amazing pics!
  • 3 1
loved to see the dh boys understand enduro is tough!! great result for fabien !! one more thing DIMA REPKIN you made us proud !!!

Fair do's to the dude Barnes! Right up the in the mix!
  • 2 0
so cool to see him do this good, can't wait to see new Dudes vid Smile
  • 2 1
I am surprised at the number of full face helmets here. I don't plan to wear one for enduro. I wonder if it's because the pros are doing the most they can to protect the ol' moneymaker?
  • 9 0
Its a rule that you have to race the timed stage with a fullface...and the tracks are really heavy...so would be stupid not to do so....
  • 3 0
 Full faces are mandatory.
  • 3 0
Well looks like I learnt somethin' - thanks!
  • 4 0
The shot of Steve and Nico is all-time.
  • 3 0
THIS IS ENDURO NOW! Joe Barns up there for the Dudes or hazard.
  • 2 1
Just to be a tech whore. have you seen Barels new bike. in the pick it looks like they have put a cover over the linkage. looks like a trek linkage literally
  • 2 1
well since you've started it it's a Horst Link, so a Spesh and not a Trek, looks like a Spesh Pitch.... literally Razz
  • 1 0
just noticed that, the bike at the podium is a strive but the bike he's riding is something different, can't see it being a standard horst link there would be no point in hiding it.
  • 2 4
 Looks like a Trek Session.

Top 3: 27.5, 26 & 26 nice! Wonder why Dan had his conti's blacked out?
  • 8 0
because Maxxis High Roller 2 Wink
  • 1 0
the Athertons are running Maxxis for a long time now... exactly from the time they signed for Continental...lol....in place of Continental i would dump them, because they are making more anti-exposure for their products...the one thing i have learned from the Athertons is: which type of tire to run if you're not sponsored by them...Maxxis all the way!
  • 3 0
Maxxis - the most blacked-out brand in history.
  • 2 0
I would be pissed as a sponsor!
  • 1 0
i would be pissed not to have a proper tire for enduro after several years working with a company Wink
  • 1 0
To "brigand", that's why they run minions in DH also.....
  • 1 0
 they still do that?
  • 2 0
The Conti Trail King 2.4 UST is an amazing tire!!
  • 1 0
side knobs smaller than on a HR2, it's less agressive, great tire but wouldn't run it on a course looking like this Smile
  • 1 0
How about the new Kaiser Projeckt 2.4? Similar profile to the HR2
  • 1 0
Yes, how about it Dan? Smile
  • 1 0
 lol, how about it Dan?
  • 1 0
conti's are great tyres, been on them for 4 years now, recently fitted the Baron 2.3 on the rear and the Trailking/ Rubber Queen 2.4 on the front. I ride similar trails to these, rocky and loose, sharp quartz and jasper seams and the conti's are bomb proof, predictable, tacky right from the get go - great tyres, but you must buy the Apex cartridge version for the stronger side walls
  • 3 0
Shouldn't Barel take to the podium the same bike he raced??
  • 2 0
No never mind no gearbox just self adjusting wheels that change size on the fly

Wow. Wragg must be working overtime to get these photos edited and up so quick. Good work!
  • 1 0
anyone knows what happened to Vouilloz, slightly odd not to see his name in the top 10
  • 2 0
Nico flatted on the 2nd special stage and lost a ton of time there. He made up a lot of it on the remaining stages, but he'd lost too much to get back in the top 10. The level was so high that you can't really afford to have any mechanical...
  • 1 0
Maes is shredding all those big stars!! He's the man to beat the next years!!!! Congrats!
  • 2 0
Here in Portugal a guy with a 29er won all the enduro races so far
  • 2 0

And she won by almost a minute. I have a feeling her bike played a very minor part of her victory.

dude 650b IS 26 3/4" the 27.5 thing is just marketing bull to give them the middle ground, the difference between 26" and 650b is tiny.

Anyone know of they're going to stream live coverage?
  • 5 4
Well well well...29'' crap are far behind 26 and 27.5. Pretty interesting.

 Moronic statement.
  • 2 0
Yeah, but Mosley won the women's on a 29er. Seems to show that rider ability is 99% and wheel size is 1%.
  • 1 0
or T Mo may have won by even more if she was allowed to use the correct tools for the job rather than being made to model the new trek comedy 29er.
  • 2 0
@ZMC888 yeah, but when your most competitive hobby is stupid comments on pinkbike, wheel size is 99% of it.
