Châtel in the Haute-Savoire region of France was the place to be last week to see Brandon Semenuk dominating at the 6th running of Châtel Mountain Style. There were valiant efforts by both local and big name riders and despite us - Geebeebee Media - only being armed with one main camera (albeit an NEX-FS700 super slo-mo prototype from Sony UK), we managed to capture some great action.

With the alpine weather playing its part, riders from across the globe ended up only having one contest run to prove themselves on the legendary 'La Face' course. Despite great effort by the local course designers and builders, the high winds and soft landings meant that some of the big features at the top of the course were barely ridden.

After a few practice runs in the morning, all the riders were corralled to the top of 'Le Face' for their one and only run. The amateurs took to the course first and did a fantastic job of wowing the crowd and tricking some of the big features, maybe we'll see some of them in the pro finals soon?

A few crashes and high fives later, it was the turn of the pros. After keeping tricks up their sleeves throughout practice, it was time to show off the big guns...

Chatel Mountain Style 2012

Andreu Lacondeguy's moto whips were huge

Aggy was one of the first riders to take a tumble, snapping half a pedal on the top of the course but still riding it out until he went head-first off a rock drop. He somehow managed to get back on and ride the rest of the course. A few riders later, and McGazza launched a backflip off the Red Bull step-down, to huge applause from the international crowd. Nick Simcik was the first to do a backflip over the finishing gap and was unlucky not to hold it on landing.

Chatel Mountain Style 2012

Super corked backflip from Sick Nick Simcik

With the game suitably upped, the rest of the riders knew they had to pull something special out of the bag to rack up the points, and they didn't disappoint, busting tables, whips, nac nacs and backflips, culminating in Semenuk's insane run, full of 360s, a huge backflip off the Red Bull step-down and a massively extended suicide over the final gap, with a trademark smooth landing.

Chatel Mountain Style 2012

"Look mom, no hands"

It's hard to imagine how the Châtel Mountain Style contest can be surpassed in terms of big mountain riding. After this, Rampage 2012 should be a walk in the park for these guys!

Chatel Mountain Style 2012

Props to Dylan Sherrard who styled a huge whip

Watch Gwin's section in the Tipping Point and tell me he doesn't have style. Just knows how to get er done when it's race time.

Ya Rampage will be anything but a walk in the park. Hahahaha. Best Chatel edit yet!

Rampage is so different than Chatel. There is so much exposure and the dirt is so soft. Step an inch off track and it's like riding through talcum powder. Plus this might just be me, but I think Rampage has much larger and sketchier jumps.

We chatted to quite a few of the riders after the event who rate Chatel as pretty much up there as one of the most difficult comps of the season. One mistake on Le Face = face full of hard rock, whereas for the most part, in Utah, it's mostly soft dirt, plus the riders get to sculpt their lines, and can - to some extent - leave room for bailing. But yes, Rampage is huge...but maybe a bit softer on the landings. Hey, riding at this level takes giant cohones, and I'd rather stay behind the camera, so huge respect to all of them!

it is a shame that you cant see the steepness of that course in videos. when you are there and look up the mountain...it is freakin insanely steep.

flag geebeebee Plus (Jul 14, 2012 at 8:57)
Yeah, agreed! We walked the course in the pouring rain the day before the comp with 35kg of camera gear and it took us 2 hours to walk down. There's no real way to show the gradient...I guess you just have to be there!

And behind the camera at the finish line you see Zink lying on the ground holding his crotch in agony and the announcer is there saying, "it's ok you placed second Smile ".

Cheers! Yes, that was our aim. It's a great camera - slo-mo, instant review, 35mm sensor, 4K eventually - it's got a lot of pros going for it. We shot two other vids whilst we were out there, one with Endless Gap (a Swiss Scott Bikes freeride team) and another with Nick Simcik (Transition Bikes rider), which are being edited already.

Did you even watch the edit? It was qualifying in really windy conditions so not much was being thrown down. The fact that he tricked both the last features put him above most of the field... regardless doing a backie off the step down to a back-nac
  • + 2
flag big-aid (Jul 14, 2012 at 15:54)
Agree with slayer, know I'll get negative propped for it.

From a snowboard background where a glove in the snow on landing is counted sloppy, to miss both pedals and ball ride it out isn't exactly filling the style or trick completion quota is it?!
  • + 2
flag scott-townes (Jul 14, 2012 at 15:58)
I don't see how this is hard to grasp... What matters is what he did COMPARED to the rest of the riders as an overall run and if you know a tiny bit about slope comps, you'd know that what he did was better OVERALL than most of the field.

Yeah it was really sloppy but it was still one of the best combined runs and he did ride out of it so it wouldn't make much sense to count it as a fall, now would it? It wouldn't make much sense either to reward someone who had a cleaner last hit than Zink but didn't throw something off each of the last two hits... again, watch the video.
