FIRST LOOK
ATHERTON
GT FURY
WORDS/PHOTOS Ian Hylands
Atherton Racing mechanic Polish Pete built up the first of the team's GT Fury DH bikes at their winter training spot in Southern California yesterday. Check out this video of the build by Pinkbike Video Guru Aaron Larock and listen to Pete talk about the bike and the parts the team will be running this year. As Pete says this is a pre-season bike and all parts and graphics etc are subject to change before the beginning of the World Cup race season.

For the 2012 race season the Atherton Racing team of Gee, Dan and Rachel Atherton and Marc Beaumont will be running a stock GT Fury frame. The bike is white for now while the team graphics are being finalized, but we can expect to see something different once World Cup time comes around. This bike has an Ultegra 11/21 9 speed cassette with a 36 tooth chainring up front that will probably remain standard through the season, and they've been working with Continental and Stan's on a tubeless setup that is pretty much dialed now. More information on the GT Fury can be found here on the GT website

There will be a few little details that will help to adjust the geometry of the bike. The team will be using a slightly shorter than stock shock, as well as offset bushings and an FSA Orbit Option headset. This will get the headtube angle to 63 degrees, and the bottom bracket height close to 13.6"

Gee Atherton s new GT Fury being built up by team mechanic Polish Pete.
The team will be running the Shimano Saint group the same as last year, with a few proto bits here and there, such as these brakes with an XTR style lever and a prototype Saint Caliper. PRO is working on a new Atherton line as well so we'll probably be seeing some new parts from them soon such as this 800mm PRO Atherton bar. Gee is running one a little bit shorter than the full 800mm.

Gee Atherton s new GT Fury being built up by team mechanic Polish Pete.
The bike is built up with an E-13 SRS Plus chain guide that the team will be using this year.

Gee Atherton s new GT Fury being built up by team mechanic Polish Pete.
For 2012 the Team will be running Fox Suspension the same as before. Everything will be fairly standard, with a few details such as a slightly shorter than stock shock, and a custom race tune. This bike has a normal spring on it right now that will be replaced with a Ti one as soon as possible, and this seatpost will be swapped out for a new PRO Atherton one as soon as they get them.

The Atherton Racing team is sponsored by One Industries for clothing this year, however the team kit is not quite done yet, we'll have details on that as soon as they're available.

Atherton Racing Q&A Session

Pinkbike's Aaron Larock will be doing a video interview with Gee and Dan later this week, what questions would you like to ask them? Write them below in the comments and we'll get them to answer as many as possible in the time we have.

The question isn't why they switched, it's why they switched THEN change the fury to have the same geometry and the commy (and if anyones states the obvious of 'that's what they're comfortable on' you'll be ignored :L)

the gommencal V.3 was kind of build for the athertons so they had a lot of influence on the geo... so if you don't get it exactely how you want it you'll have to change it an thats what they are doing with the GT.

The geometery is similar because thats obviously what works for them racing, and it is pretty standard race geometery for world cups.

The thing is: it would be too expensive to create new carbon forms for an up-to-date fury-frame so they have to use these measures instead.

Guys... Comm is a good bike but I can assure and you will see in a near future that GT Fury is a much faster and better bike. The geo changes were necessary to make the bike capable of winning WC's in our hands, it might not be necessary for other riders. Also please look at any other race bikes, different cups, custom shocks etc. It's normal. In my personal opinion I think it looks good, it's lighter and FASTER...and this is all I care aboutSmile If you have any constructive questions please PM me. Thanks, Pete

Hey Guys, Thanks for watching the video. Just to clarify I was answering specific questions. Obviously when you change bikes people ask about the differences between them. When you look at the modern DH race bikes you will agree that most of them are pretty slack and low it's not just Commencal. GT's suspension platform is far superior. We have made some changes to get the best out of the the new bike which I can tell you is already faster than the last season! Thanks, Pete

To be fair you'd expect the top racers in the world to make adjustments to any bike to get absolute peak performance, and they'll do it for each track. Next years frame may be altered to the Athermont/Beauton spec, but they're probably all gonna run it slightly differently so it will be a centrist compromise regardless. 2 cents Smile

flag deeeight Plus (Jan 16, 2012 at 9:05)
GT is currently poorly distributed in canada because their previous distributor here (genesis cycles) decided last year to launch their own brand of cookie-cutter made in asia bikes. But yes if a shop staffer requests a 'one off' order thru the correct product rep for a bike brand they also distribute but for which the store isn't a dealer, they can usually get you the thing. I was wrenching at a dealer that gets its parts from Norco which is also the Ritchey, Haro, DMR and Masi distributor for canada. The store carried Masi and Ritchey bikes and frames but not the other three, but by asking the rep I got a Haro beasley shipped there for myself.

The GT bikes available to canada (ie, the ones the distributor bothers to import) does include the Fury DH bike... but does not include a whole bunch of XC and Trail and All-mtn models that are available in the USA, and often in models they do offer...they'll only import ONE size of them. I own a 17" 2008 GT Peace 9R Multi in the rasta colour scheme because Genesis wouldn't import then 15" or 19" frame sizes at all for that model, and its the only one I could get here.

GT USA has exactly 12 women's model bikes available (counting the road and mtb lines) but GT Canada only offers THREE of them, and all at the bottom of the model ranges.... the highest level they give women here an option of is the Avalanche 4.0 hardtail and the Series 4 road bike. GT USA's XC Race lineup is now seven 29er models, one full suspension 26er and the Xixand titanium frameset. GT Canada has 5 bikes including three 26er hardtails not apparently offered by GT USA any longer (if the website is anything to go by). Of course they could also be old inventory that the canadian distributor still has and is still trying to move.

  • + 2
flag deeeight Plus (Jan 16, 2012 at 9:11)
DH'ers who aren't sponsored tend to run tubes because a full on reliable tubeless setup costs a lot more, as they usually insist on nothing but full UST setups and tire options for full UST compliance are more limited. Most racers I know who have had to pay for their own bikes (even at pro-deal prices) will run whatever came on the bike as much as possible to keep their costs down. If the bike came with UST tires and wheels, they'll stick to UST tires... but if they didn't... they're not going to likely want to spend another chunk of money until they've at least trashed their existing wheelset.

Has anyone here actually had a shot on a Fury? The bb is 14.02" static which isn't overly high, personally I wouldn't mind a carbon fury in a bright colour scheme like that of Marc Beaumont's last year. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ewIVv1aRuoU/TIDRfUnSYZI/AAAAAAAAATA/sQ7WX0hp1NA/s1600/Presentaci%C3%B3n1.jpg

Not to have an argument Ian but even if the bike shown in the picture I linked was from another year what relevance would that have other than slight technicalities to the point I was trying to make. There's no logical reasoning behind others saying that a GT isn't as good as a commencal.

He rode the blue frame with the red forks at the BDS and the silver and black with the yellow stripe at WCs. the picture i linked was from 2011 BDS. so maybe he used it last year for worlds and is now using the same frame for races in England, who knows but it does look pretty good.

Who thinks they will use a progressive wound shock to make this bike exactly like their old one?

Kind of ridiculous really, engineers usually should be finding best theoretical settings and making slight changes from there to suit rider. Really should be trying the bike stock for a good while first. Almost no point in moving if they just want the same thing- beside the cash of course!

Agree completely. I do wonder though if they havent already spent some time on the bikes before making the move? I don't know. But yeah, seems like they're just pulling out the cookie cutter and going with what they know. Seems logical, but I guess if I was at their level I'd be looking for any possible overlooked edge I could use to my advantage.

It depends how and what you ride. I think that for freeriders the progressive suspension would be better then a linear, cuz that would just blew through the travel, but for DH it's kinda better to have smooth(er) travel all the way.

flag mountguitars (Jan 16, 2012 at 15:02)

Bottom line engineering wise is they do not like what they are on, thus have modified it.
I guess we will find out on the 18th March if it is faster/better than the Commi.
1.92s over a 4 minute track in 2011. 1% faster than the Commi and Gee will be on top!

Questions for Pete: I own a 2011 Carbon Fury, its a sick ride and for the geo nuts it came standard with a Crane Greek angleset so has a 64 degree HA. Anyway Pete, I am upgrading parts of it at the moment and I'm having trouble sourcing a new seat post (30mm) and seat clamp (38mm). What brand post and clamp is currently on Gee's fury and do you know when PRO be releasing a post and clamp that fits? Lastly, what size frame and stem length do Gee, Rachel, Dan and Marc ride? Cheers

Some aftermarket 30.0mm options for Fury Carbon post are Thomson, RaceFace, Truvativ, & SDG (that I know off the top-of-my-head). The 36.4mm clamp size is pretty standard on carbon frames. A high end road or mtn bike dealer should be able to help sort you out. Hope makes this size and this is what Marc used last season.

I think you should get your facts correct first before you begin to give your lecture... Gt is on of the founding brands in the Mountain Bike Industry, Using knowledge from 1979 till now, to have refined their bikes too the best they can be. The Athertons will win so long as they remain fast racers, its not the bike that matters, it's the person. And about Kyle Strait, he has not made any good DH results in a long time, but you must have payed no attention to the FMB tour and slopestyle evets last year, because, he killed it! He won best trick with a double tailwhip at Claymore Challenge, and a top 6 result at many other contests, double whipping the last drop at Red Bull Joyride. I'm sorry, but i can guarantee you will be proved wrong, and the team as a whole will kill it this year.

flag iamamodel (Jan 15, 2012 at 18:42)
I think less is more - I am not a GT fan and I think function always beats form but by God this has to be one of the most beautiful bikes I've ever seen - enough to convert a few DHers to GT on looks alone.

I was riding at Laguna once and saw a pearlescent white prototype (or probably a pre-production final) and I said 'You've got to bring it out just like that.' To cover it in logos would be a shame. Mick's paint jobs were okay but that white pearl, in the flesh, is just so gorgeous.

flag chrisrussell (Jan 15, 2012 at 18:45)
@Ian, its not the graphics im on about. I mean the general look of the bike. I know the mechanical workings of the bike take predominance, however people like specialized, Giant, Trek etc manage to create a well functioning bike and creating a look that will make people want to buy it. With this bike, there i just nothing on it that makes it "cool"

 Pretty freaking rad bike.
GT was the first to offer a full carbon PRODUCTION DH bike. This Furry frame is like 4 years old already, built with input from Bryn Atkinson. Impressive that with only a few minor geo adjustments that the family is confident enough to sign with GT and race this tough guyfor the coming season.

Sure you could diss the bikes aesthetics compaired to the follower carbon frames from Trek or Special Ed cuz they are fresh out of the molds.

Thats the camble with carbon versus alloy, you cant just spark up the torch and change geos for each riders mood.

flag iamamodel (Jan 15, 2012 at 22:59)
Chris, I understand what you are saying, but perhaps it is because it looks so different from the "Looks like a Trek" mob (Trek, Spesh, Kona, Norco, Giant - ignoring suspension designs, of course) that it is going straight onto the 'Sub Zero' panel of The Cool Wall.

I think the others went "This design works in aluminum, so lets just reproduce it in carbon", where GT went "Well, with carbon the frame design has no limits, so let's start from scratch." GT started at the front and are still there in terms of what can be done with carbon.

I think that the Fury is very rideable. It would be stupid to say that is not. The Athertons are pro racers, so it's normal that they will customize the bike to what they think is the best for them. Isn't that we are all doing by swapping bars, stems, and other parts to suit the bike to ourselves? It is, only that they are doing it on a higher level.

Currently I ride Commencal ex Athertons team bike and I have some observations on the new GT Fury as well. I've tested it last year on a bike competition, and I was not really impressed, there are many brands (Orange, Lapierre) using single pivot design better than GT . I think GT is not my favorite BB too high, rear end not too responsive, the rear shock eyelets dont look too durable, also they haven't changed much since their previous model. On the other side I would love to try Saracen or even consider to get one, it is similar to Foes Hydro, and the new " pending" Tomac and they seems more reasonable to me and my style Wink

Carbon key differences at weight, cost and the feel. Carbon will flex, allowing a smoother ride. Alloy and cro-mo don't as much.
  • + 1
flag UncleCliffy (Jan 15, 2012 at 19:32)
But GT has said many times in the past, that the Fury wasn't developed for weight savings. They wanted a stronger frame with different flex/stiffness built into it. They could engineer the "feel" of the frame with carbon more efficiently than alloy. Not weight savings.
  • + 1
flag conv3rt (Jan 15, 2012 at 20:15)
I think AL vs carbon question depends on the design of either. I think in the end it comes down to weight personally. If you're talking a hard tail it may change the "feel" of the ride but once you put suspension in, it comes down to the link design more that the material choice. in my experience carbon tends to absorb or insulate against impacts (ground to rider) but either can be ultra stiff / strong / impact resistant. I hit a carbon frame with a ball peen hammer at my LBS as a promotion of the frame maker and not a scratch. An AL frame would have at least dented. I wouldn't say carbon will flex. Especially when it's laid up into a tube shape. My $0.02.

flag wilkey (Jan 15, 2012 at 22:03)
I rode them both at dealer camp. and I have to tell you even though they are the "same bike" minus frame material. The fury frame was not designed to be anything but a carbon bike. At least that is how I felt, the alloy rode like S@#$. I was talking to the rep and he said it was mostly for use as a fleet bike at rental shops. But the carbon.'' OMG!!!! I jizzed in my pants and rode it all day. The reps were mad but I don't care it was sooooooooo fun. The bike, Even though it really isn't that light is really flickable. Part of that might be the high center of gravity feel it has, possibly a consequence of the high pivot point. That high feeling was weird, but it was super fun, it really gave me that feeling of controlled mach 2 chaos, that I love, while i was riding it. It also felt like it had some rearward travel. Like the Canfield Jedi does, but the Canfield suspension is designed specifically to give it that 2" or rearward travel. Mulling over this in my mind i feel it was because of the high single pivot that the wheel would go initially up and back. It made it accelerate sooo fast super rough sections. Faster then anything else I've ridden, examples pivot, turner, kona, commencal, and transition bikes couldn't touch this thing in a drag down a rough section the only thing that would compare is again the Canfield. This is basically what really stood out to me when I rode this bike. It is really great and just bikes alone on the mind i would take the fury in a heart beat above anything else. I totally get why the Atherton's went with GT because this bike alone really feels like something you can win on.

flag Nikolais (Jan 15, 2012 at 22:36)
The Geo is exactly the same on the Carbon and Alloy bikes. I have spent time on the Carbon Fury as well as the Alloy fury and I have found that they feel extremely similar if not exactly the same! The Carbon does seem to absorb the high frequency 'buzz' that Alloy frames have when hitting stutter bumps and rougher faster sections. I didnt gather this from riding around in a car park - I have ridden these bikes on DH trails here in SA, spending a lot of time on the Cascades WC course.
One other thing that I found was; I ordered a Large Alloy Fury (I am 6'4") and when measured against the Medium Carbon they are almost exactly the same in length (Top Tube measurement), which was quite strange. The Medium Alloy is roughly an inch shorter than the large alloy.
Keep this in mind if you are fussy about fit.

Why the shorter shock? Wanting a shorter wheel base?
  • + 2
flag frost1988 (Jan 15, 2012 at 18:57)
to change the head angle slightly probably only be a few mm shorter
  • + 8
flag IanHylands Mod Plus (Jan 15, 2012 at 19:12)
Shortening the shock will make the bb a tiny bit lower and the head tube a bit slacker. It will actually increase the wheelbase by a mm or two as well...
  • + 1
flag frost1988 (Jan 15, 2012 at 19:26)
yeah i was refering to the shock length didnt really think about the bb but now that you mention it yeah it would
  • + 4
flag UncleCliffy (Jan 15, 2012 at 19:55)
As long as Fox can keep the shock stroke the same, and shorten the eye to eye, no travel loss. Just have to make sure everything clears at bottom-out.

They are making the geometry on the Fury similar to how they set up the geometry on the Commencal because that's how they like the bike. The ride of the bike will still be quite different. It's a pretty basic concept, and something that is fairly common in racing.

Yes but its I-drive, the bb moves and theres a rearward axle curve, so no chain growth or brake jack
  • + 2
flag deeeight Plus (Jan 16, 2012 at 9:41)
Technically they're known as floating bottom bracket linkages, the Maverick frame is another like that and the now discontinued Haro Virtual link also fit into that category to a degree. On an I-Drive, the swingarm pivots off the frame, and the bottom bracket floats on a pair of double-ended concentric pivots that rotate around it and part of the swingarm, while their magic link (that big polished silver skeleton looking thing on the pics above) is constantly pulling the BB forward as the swingarm rotates upwards and away from it.

the bb moves and theres a rearward axle curve, so no chain growth or brake jack
  • - 1
flag jclnv (Jan 16, 2012 at 20:10)
The BB rotates forward under compression and the high single pivot axle path is rearward.

You might want to rethink the chain growth point...

And the brake jack point is even less valid. The bottom line is this bike will ride like any other high single pivot (with the same rate) but maybe with a slight sensation of something odd going on with the BB position. Unfortunately marketing drives design more than performance. Apart from weight, I don't see any advantage to this bike over the teams 2010 bike. Obviously $ was the main factor in the decision.
