About Coast Gravity Park Coast Gravity Park will be a year round, lift-accessed bike park on the Sunshine Coast, BC. There is a crowd funding page where you can pre-buy your lift pass to help support the development of as many trails as possible before opening. Check out the crowd funding page for more details and to find out how you can show your support.
that kid has got to be soo stoked for this new setup. definitely owes his parents a thanks for letting the coastal crew play around on their land. I think we all owe them a thanks.
Smooth now, but if everyone rides kicking their rear tire out it won't stay that way for long. Wonder what the trail maintenance guys feel about that type of showy riding. (Looks good for the camera though...)
Burnbern... anyone who knows how to have fun on the bike does this "showy" riding as you consider it, to the rest of us its pure fun to get the back end loose on trails. im guessing getting the back end loose means something different in your vocabulary. Trail crew gets paid to keep up the trails, bottom line IT'S THEIR JOB. so please quit bitching about literally nothing...
@mulchee - Awesome! @Keyboardkilla - Doesn't sound like bitching to me, sounded more like a question. And the guy above you answered the question perfectly...
My only experience with bike parks is riding the brake bumps and ruts, never had the opportunity to ride fresh/smooth trails like in the video, so I "wondered"...
if i put 4000 hrs of maintenance in to that park i would go absolutely mental to see someone keep skidding about like that! how can pros/ams moan at first timers for wrecking tracks when pro's wreck tracks just to look good for the camera. i know they probably do put a lot of effort it to keeping the tracks maintained but it send out the wrong message completely to beginners.
DEFINITELY sounds like you're complaining about something you have no knowledge about seeing you're questioning how a trail crew feels about someone riding their trail... thats like asking an asphalt worker how he feels when someone drifts on a street he paved. he doesn't give a shit. he gets paid to do the work and he will get paid to do the maintenance.
isnt this common sense for christs sake? if you get angry about someone skidding on your trail you haven't come to terms with growing up yet because its not the end of the f*cking world.
cheers man im just really sick of people complaining when the big idea is that there is a brand new bike park being built yet small things like this are focused on
Don't worry about it... I see my one "offensive" question and about 30 positive comments in this thread so far. The focus is on the awesome... and it is awesome...
litter pickers get paid to pick up litter, doesn't mean everyone should go out dumping all there trash everywhere cos someone else will pick it up. like i said it just sends out the wrong message.
As for not having a lot of knowledge in trail building, Unfortunately i put allot of time in to repairing trails for FREE, and even if i got paid, i wouldn't say spending half a day repairing trails enjoyable..... so to come back a week later and find that your hard work has gone to waste because someone watched a video of there favourite pro skidding around and thinks its looks COOL, obviously this gets a little annoying to say the least.
ramrodd, sounds like you got a rod rammed where it doesn't belong. it's dirt. tires are gonna rip it up one way or the other. the fact that the park is gonna be open year round and subject to more weather than your average bike park is probably going to do more damage than a few skids anyways. these guys know what they're getting into, and i'm sure they're prepared for it.
id put money on the majority of people complaining about skidding actually having no trail building experience in the first place.. main thing that's gonna kill your trails is erosion and shitty building. as long as they aren't building it on super organic loamy soil and the drainage is good, the skidding won't do much. since these guys are some of the best trail builders around i'd suggest getting your panties out of a bunch and just embracing the park.
@joeyjd - I understand where you are coming from, if you build a shitty trail obviously you have bigger worries than skidding. But, in this case you have some of the best trail builders and they are building great trails. So a poor draining trail isn't a problem. In my experience skidding through the corners is very easy way to destroy nice berms. Especially when the weather is wet.
Check out the look on a dirt jumpers face if you skid down his transition on a dirt jump he just built and tell me he doesn't consider it to be a problem.
That said, it sounds like you may have some real trail building experience, at least you talk like it. If you do, then that helps to answer my initial question. The skidding isn't that big of a deal...
it has more to do with the dirt you're building with. if it's super organic and soft it will get ripped apart easily, and that's how trails get destroyed. looks like most of the coast trails are built with the same stuff we use on the shore. it's super rich in minerals - hence why they call it "gold" - and it doesn't collect water easily. it won't go far from the trails because it doesn't facilitate erosion, and a little bit more aggressive riding won't require that much more maintenance than any bike park would.
Jeez why so f*cking pissy? The guy above was saying he was thinking of this place over Whistler I was saying it probably wasn't a good substitute YET,I am not putting this place down in any way, chill the f*ck out.
I'm sorry, I don't see where I was pissy or aggressive... I admitted I missed your point, then asked for you to expand upon it since I missed it... Perhaps it is you who should chill out?
Hell yeah! This is why I threw down 120 bucks. You gotta start from something. I'll continue to support these types of projects all day! So stoked I moved to the PNW. And Tippie's attitude is infectious. Love that guy.
awesome! but in the UK we love berms like that go to a place like swinley or forest of dean, bike park wales and you'll find masssssssooove berms their so much fun! i want to build a BERM and jump only trail with no straight parts and all corners big ass berms with take off's at the end of them it should look something like this "sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss" D: that would be amazing
The uk needs proper jump trails like this , forest of dean has tried and got it half right.
The problem is every thing need to be rollable over here , so lips get rolled off and braking bumps appear , whereas if it was all gap jumps like that proline in the video every thing would last so much longer.
A lot of official trail places in the UK seem to hide behind this " its for people to progress " bullshit , progress to what ? there are no advanced public jump trails in the Uk with the exception of parts of Bikepark wales , give us some proper big jumps !
I remember walking the property with my dad Bill Stockwell, grandpa Ray Stockwell and the Coastal Crew for the very first time!! I ride the trails on the weekend and I think the trails are by far the best! Get your passes now!! WE PLAN TO HAVE PREVIEW DAYS FOR ANYONE WHO HAS A PASS!!!
sounded to me like its open, although not finished. so yes its open to the public if you dont mind only having a few trails. and since theres no lift yet theyre driving shuttles to the top, hence the pickup trucks filled with bikes
No, I don't think it is officially open. Their crowd funding page seems to be the best place to get info right now. From what I can tell, it will be open to the general public full time in late 2014. If you buy one the passes that cost more than $50, you will get invited to special "preview" days. I don't know how often those preview days will be, but my guess is that it would be something like once a month until it fully opens. I assume they will have shuttles, or let people use their own vehicles for shuttles on the preview days until the lift is in.
I'd like to know how many people in this super unique area of mtn biking, who've managed to achieve some level of pro mountain biker status, have donated money? Or as usual are they just hoping to mooch their way through? Just wondering. Lots of sponsored/blog level mountain bikers around these areas... In my experience, they feel their rad skills are all they owe our sport...
What they are doing is awesome... Great to see SO many riders stoked on those trails. Can't wait to see what they have to come! Oh yeah, band and song at 6:15 into the vid?
Every corners a berm every straight section is a jump! Amazing great JOB!! Cant wait to ride this Mt! Saw the crazy jump section in another Vid so happy they kept it!!
but actually...
I have faith that gravity logic and the forest service will be able to work together on some trails like this for next summer up at snow summit!
I'd rather get shot in the face than listen to another group of 15 year olds talk about "how sick that last whip was!" at snow summit. On the other hand a jump only trail might keep all the posers off the real dh trails so maybe not a bad idea hmmm
Yeah good point i was probably way worse. Any new trails at summit would be well recieved. The word is forest service approved a good amount of new trails for next season. This year was super fun although crazy crowded at times
I see big tings for this place. I hope they are prepared for the masses that will be flooding that little part of the Coast. I know where I'm going once I'm healed up.
Is this the same place as junkyard slope style in Life behind bars ? Looks like it @ 12.21 . Hope this sets new trends for chairlifts specifically for bikes !!
Lol I helped build those trails I was in the pic. like 5 times throughout the film!! Btw super sick trails, and can't wait to shred em big thanks to everyone who helped!
Get some people and make an effort to build it. I wanted more fun trails to ride around where I live, so I've been building them. Like Tippie said in the video "Procrastination is like masturbation, in the end you're only screwing yourself." I can't even ride right now because of injuries, but you can bet I'm still out there.
The trail I'm building is with a shovel and a pick axe and that's every spare hour I have. With those tools and only me building, it'd be years before I created a trail like that. Unfortunately, I also work, have various commitments, a lack of suitable terrain, a girlfriend and it's pitch black by the time I'm home. Some of us aren't in your position.

Also, it's not open yet. They will have more trails when it's officially open.
But thank you for flipping out on me?
