Kicking Horse Bike Park Trail Crew Update #3
by Steve Crowe
Aug 27, 2008
The straight goods on Kicking Horse Bike Park, straight from the trail crew's fingertips.
Summer isn’t over until the white stuff flies at Kicking Horse Bike Park. The best part of our season is just starting. In September the sun has stopped sucking the moisture out of your body, the incessant drone of bugs fades, the colors change, the light is sharper and richer, the RVs are mostly off the highways and the trails are buff. All season’s work has been for the sake of killer riding in September. Are you coming?

In September the sun has stopped sucking the moisture out of your body, the incessant drone of bugs fades, the colors change, the light is sharper and richer, the RVs are mostly off the highways and the trails are buff. All season’s work has been for the sake of killer riding in September. Are you coming?
Work continues unabated on Phase II of the recently opened Stickrock. Judging by the hoots and hollers we hear above us, Phase I is making some friends.
Have a look at this helmet cam footage from patrol rider Aaron Bernasconi:
We are trying to stay consistent with the theme of rock slabs and woodwork combined for smooth flow. Expect more gaps, berms, drops, etc. We are very hopeful to have Phase II open by the end of this season. But we are also aware that the white stuff sometimes flies here in September. So we will keep hammering away until all is buried.
Other than that, Aaron and Matt have added a couple features to Time Travel. The first is a complex, demanding skinny before the existing complex, demanding skinny. The second is an elevated teeter totter. Nothing comes easily on Time Travel.
Chuck built a wooden step down at the bottom of Rock and Roll on the connection to Superberm that eliminates some snarby dirt holes and adds some sweet air. And the guys added a jump and a table to the bottom of Roadrunner that offer an airborne link to Stickrock.
And finally, two wooden wall rides were raised on the left of School Marm to balance the three dirt wall rides already scratched in on the right. So now you get to go dirt – wood – dirt – wood – dirt. How often in your daily life do you get to do that?
Keep in mind that from September 1 to October 12, Kicking Horse Bike Park will be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting. That means we are not open on Labour Day (Monday). Be sure to check the weather forecast before coming in case your skis/snowboard would be more suitable that day.

Ride on.

Looks like a seriously good time.
woah i really need to go there. there looked like technical "drop-to-oh-shit-a-turn" situations. they help you stay on your feet.
Or you could have turn turn turn, or is this why North Americans are shit at racing? (For the majority)
Perhaps we have such interesting terrain here that we enjoy the trails for the ride. I think racers generally come from areas where there isn't that much variety so they have to come up with a way to have fun. So they string up miles of plastic ribbons and go as fast as they can between them. I don't mind being "shit" at that.

The more I see of that place, the more I want to visit. I gotta get a bigger pay check because my budget just isn't working. Need to go to BC!!!
Tell me about it/// Canada is where it's at... especially BC. Awesome riding, awesome scenery, awesome people, etc.
You should see the gap jump over the grizzly bear enclosure - i heard that someone backflipped it!!!
Yeah, I heard psychosis is being replaced by a gap-the-griz red bull contest. They're going to paint the griz red and put fake horns on him...
if you liked whistler - skip kicking horse. Not even in the same league. Trails are painfully rough. I don't see the appeal personally. Mount 7 - Now that ROCKS!!!!
ya i agree keep going to whistler not kicking horse
its good but really wash board and rocky ur frame takes a beating from all the rocks bouncing up

let me sound this out for you nice and slow - m o u n t a i n b i k i n g...... not supposed to be all smooth and pretty. and speaking of wash board, you sure we have been to the same whistler? my knuckles almost exloped there from the washboard.
im sorry but smooth all day is pretty boring. im looking for technical challenging terrain. also hitting the same table after table after table adter table can get boring too
i'm just curious do they take everything down during the winter
i don't think they do....do they just leave them there during the winter

Most of the wooden features are built either close to the ground so they will be covered in snow, or in tight clumps of trees that people don't ski in anyway. For those features that do interfere with skiing, we mark them off with bamboo and rope so people don't get surprised.
heat! canadians do not know heat. you will know what its like to have the mosture sucked out of your body when you ride in arizona. but other than that this place looks awesome! some day ill get there....
I don't think you guys in AZ get as much humidity as we do. We get alot of 100 degree days with the humidex.
Passing up the last weekend on the Fernie slopes to hit kicking horse this weekend. Looking forward to it.
Hey, does anyone ever try and ride those wooden features on a snow bike thingamagig in the winter?
Could be pretty sweet, I bet you could get like 3 feet of air!!

on another topic though i always love to see new stuff developing at resorts like this, ive venver been out to kicking horse befotre but this just makes me wish more and more that i can get out there for a weekend!
the helmet cam doesn't do those steep rock faces justice, if you go any faster than those guys you will end up on your ass... ha-ha
hes saying they were riding slow.
and they might of been but so what, there just having, its not a race, there just getting a vid to help promote the resorte a bit

Man I was there last year, thanks a lot guys for building all this. Oh well guess I'm gonna have to make a trip out there again. Darn!!
Kick ass. I want to build some stuff like that here in my local woods.. would be excellent. Great craftmanship guys.. keep it up I'll make it West coast one day, for now i'm keeping it East Coast.
I've been riding KHMR for 4 years and gets better and better each year. No more cat tracking from the upper bowl to Blaster. Awesome work to the trail crew, keep it up for next year.
i woulder if they let north legions on the hill i have one it would be sick to ride it there rcr sucks i live in fernie

Hey all you pussies that complain about the rocks hitting your frame or it being too bumpy. C'mon!! Give us all a break and quit yer bitching and RIDE. If you can't hang on get a bigger travel bike or just leave it up to us to rip this bitchin place apart.
Whistler is good, but Kicking Horse is for those that can actually ride. Any joe blow can ride Whistler. Suck it up Princess!!
Racing is about being fast on everything, if you can't pin it down Technical stuff, your not much of a racer now are ya?? You need to diversify your portfolio's dudes.

Was there last weekend. This hill beats the sh*t out of you by the end of the day and that's why I love it so much. Yes its rocky and steep and not completely buff and smooth everywhere, that's why its great. Nice job, Pioneer trail kills!
love the work te trail crew guys are doing up there and also looking after the wounded AA ++ keep up the awsome work up there its always fun riding the horse.
the wallrides on school marm are fun bun should be twice as long... still they're fun ... stick rock is fun as hell and the video doesn't really do justice to how steep the slabs are.. love the stuff at the bottom of roadrunner ... ( isn't it the bottom of buffalo jump ?? ) regardless great job there.. that new stuff on time travel is also awesome.. love it
kicking horse is doing awesome work on hill, keep it up.
