The start of what we now know as Crankworx all revolved around the Joyride Bikercross. It was the first big event to be showcased at the Whistler Summer Gravity Festival. Of course the Whistler Summer Gravity Festival grew and grew and grew until it became the Crankworx event that we all know and love today.

Over the years the race has went from a Four Cross format to Dual Giant Slalom and this year there was another shift in how the race would be run. Riders were pitted against the clock as they raced down the Giant Slalom course. Two runs with a combined time and of course the lowest would win. Gone was the mano-a-mano battles from the previous generations of the race.

The course was in fantastic shape, massive berms, long tables and big doubles. The name of the game was to pedal and keep the bike low to the ground. Bike choice was an interesting factor as many of the pros like Brendan Fairclough and Leigh Donovan choose to hammer it out on their downhill bikes while others like Tomas Slavic, a cross-over athlete from the BMX racing world chose to ride his hardtail. Speaking of Leigh Donovan the feisty and energetic former professional downhill racer came out of retirement this week. She has raced all over the world but now chooses to only hit up a couple of fun events every year. This year the Giant Slalom at Kokanee Crankworx was her last race in her thirty's. Still fast as ever she will be hitting the big 40 mark soon.

The racing was fast and furious, with a course that starts at the top of the Bone Yard and runs to the bike wash set-up it did not take long for the riders to make it down. There were no real surprises in who was the fastest. Although all of the racers were looked fast the names that you would expect to stand out did.

In the women's race it was the one and only Jill Kintner who dominated both of the heats. With her background in BMX and Four Cross racing it was her race from the start. Melissa Buhl another Four Cross specialist who has made the jump into downhill racing came across with a combined time that had her sitting in second, while third was held down by Danielle Beecroft.

The men's race saw some exciting action, in the first round. Blake Carney was the first to really set the standard when he shaved almost a second off of the top time laying down a 40.22. Mikal Marosi was next up and couldn't top the American's time. The man to knock down Carney was non-other than Tomas Slavic, a man very familiar with this style of course and the only one to break the forty second mark with a 39.85.

The second round was run in reverse order and like the women's race there were no real surprises, most of the guys pretty much held their positions from the first run. In an interesting moment Guido Tschugg and Brian Lopes (entering another Crankworx event, man this guy likes to compete) tied with exact combined times. Though the results list them as sharing sixth spot usually what happens in this situation is that the winner of the second moto takes the higher placing.

The only major changes in position after two runs was between second and third as Blake Carney and Johanne Fischbach swapped spots. Fischbach finished with the silver medal and Carney was bumped back to third. Johanne had the fastest second lap but when the times were combined it was not enough to take the lead away from Slavik. Interestingly the top three all had a combined time that sat in the same second, only 0.51 separating first and second while Carney was only .60 off of Tomas' winning time.

Hardtails take this event every time. Slavic should have raced his 20" Big ups to Blake and KHS. Thought Melissa Buhl had a good run going until the bottom when she ran out of gas. Thought she had alot more gas, she rides a bike fast too. The riders on dh bikes look like goofballs on that track.
