After Kamloops and Semenuk's crash it's time to head back home to their setup of ramps, fun bag, quarters, and roof gap. Then, Semenuk busts a perfect line and hops in a rally car for some fun.
I can see why youve made the whole pastrana comaprison the freestyle/rally but even though brandon is amazing pretty sure he'd admit pastrana is on a whole different level
im sorry but ive got to clear things up, Travis Pastrana is a professional winner as in all he does is win at everything he does... Brandon Semenuk is just a professional MTBer... they are not on the same level
isaac marangoni i have no idea why your telling me to stfu, i didnt say brandon wasn't quality he is undoubtedly the best freerider out there and cant see anyone coming close, but in terms of action sports travis has still done much more just my opinion
It's nuts that he's so versatile. It seems he can apply his skill to anything. He's handy with the rally car and the MX bike as well as being the best freeride mountain biker in the world. Pretty amazing guy.
even if he had money in the first place, it doesnt mean if you had the same you would be as good as him, unless you also landed in a cornfield with a radioactive asteriod...
It's a balance of money, your parents (how supportive they are initially), rider talent and opportunity. Brandon is very lucky to have amazing opportunities, and obviously his skill has made him top of his game. You never know, any of us here may be the worlds best rally drivers if we were given the opportunity
Yeah, well said. It's down to a combination of factors rather than one factor in isolation - although obviously the natural talent is the most important factor. Without that you're never going to make it big. Brendan is lucky enough to have been provided with oppertunities but it's because of the talent and hard work that he's so good at it.
I think what metalarc was trying to say was if he was rich he would buy the same things brandon has (Big house, sick yard and cars e.c.t) not he would be on the same skill level.
tom666 said it. Brandon has worked really damned hard to make the most of the talent he's got and become as good of a rider that he is. Definitely wasn't just handed to him.
Metalarc, he may have money but he doesnt spend it on his jumps notice how all the jumps have a RedBull sign on them thats because they pay for all the supplies!
@tom666 it's due to a combination of factors and the most important factor is HARD WORK. you can't say natural talent got brandon semenuk where he is today. maybe he was the best out of all his friends in high school, but what got him to where he is is his work ethic. anyone who actually knows brandon will tell you how hard of a worker he is and they'll most likely go on and on about how hard he works to be the best.
I would disagree, although I'm not taking anything away from him. If he didn't have the natural talent, no matter how hard he worked he wouldn't be the best in the world. Of course you need both factors together to get the real deal, but all the top end dudes work really hard and the work ethic isn't what seperates him from guys like pilgrim and lacondeguy.
yes it is. it all comes down to how badly you want it. just like what Darren Berreclothe said in Seasons: "It takes a little bit of talent and a whole lot of hard work." natural talent may help you get comfortable on a bike quicker than other kids, but natural talent didn't win brandon Red Bull Joyride, or Rampage, it didn't teach him frontflip barspins, it didn't get him all his sponsors. HARD WORK got him all that.
Getting comfortable isn't when natural talent stops helping you. All the top dudes work really hard. The hard work got him to being a professional, but what seperates Brandon form other people who work just as hard as him is the talent and other factors we mentioned. If you think Brandon is the only guy in freeride who wants it and is the only guy who works really hard you're greatly mistaken. All the top pros work rediculessly hard and have earned their place in the top ranks, but it's at this point where everyone is working crazy hard that other factors separate them. As we said, it's not all one factor in isolation.
yeah it's not all just one factor, but using "natural talent" as an excuse for others not being as good as him is just lame. it's pathetic. it's like blaming your gear for your poor riding. it all comes down to how well YOU perform and how much YOU want it.
its not even a thing of "hard work", or "Natural Talent". when you have money you have the time. he can afford to buy a helicopter Im sure.and with his doe he's got the time to learn to fly it, and become good at it. proffessional Bike riding is pure love but its a known fact that they (pro riders) are not making NFL players money. I mean even the creaters of the parts he's using dont live in houses like that.. he is a rich kidd enjoying a poor mans sport because flipping on a bike happens to be a little more fun then playing polo. and somewhere along the line someone in a company who knew someone who knew him got him to be a poster boy to help make this getting expensive sport look even better to the poor man who works two jobs to buy these parts and still have the love to do it but can only do it on the weekends. yes the Bike has become the new flying machine but pure love alone will not help companies make the parts to make them fly even higher . they get rich kidds like Brandon to help them hustle funds to make it happen . otherwise most of yall will wake up and realise 700 hundred dollars is just to much for a bike much less a crank.
Semenuk probably loves the sport more than most riders... He was smart, gave himself a good public image, was conservative with his money.. He doesn't party every nght like a lot of pros. Hard work is more than just riding a lot. He's earned everythin he has and don't hate on that just because you have to start farther back than he did or because you haven't gotten to where you want to be just yet.
@metalarc: biking is NOT a poor mans sport! you're right though, 700$ is a lot of money, but is pennies compared to the cost of a bike to compete at a world class level.
I'd go as far as to say biking is the opposite of a poor man's sport. Most of the people I know who ride are teenagers from middle class families and older guys who have a fair amount of money to drop on good kit. People on low incomes can't afford to spend £50 on a handlebar.
I remember when I used to be jealous of Cam Mcauls pool jump - now Cam probably feels the same way about Semenuk's back yard. Seriously - airbag, mulch jump, and full slopestyle course - talking about having an edge over the competition.
One day........... Just one day I will win the lottery!! Then I can have all this too!!!
Haha it's good to laugh or I'll cry, it's good to dream or I'll die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brandon is the man! I just feel bad for his competition, when you compare the "yard" and surrounding mountains available to him to what say Pilgrim has (a few jumps and some skateparks). It's not difficult to see why he has the edge on a lot of bigger courses when he can ride that stuff day in day out. Either way, a lot of people could have those opportunities and still not come close to what Brandon is achieving, he is on another level.
Completely move their whole life away from their friends and family and everything that is familiar to them. It would be just as hard as any other person.
Hibbard, what do you know you're 16 years old..
If you want to do it right and make a career some sacrifices must be made..
Oh god! gotta move to Whistler, the worst place in the world for a mountain biker..
The roof drop is amazing. The thing that made it look hard was that there was almost no run up at all, it was straight onto the takeoff. Semenuk is an amazing rider and good luck to him for the rest of the season.
I really enjoy these episodes, its so much fun to watch and it really makes me want to get out and ride! Can't wait for Claymore on the 21st (hope he's there)!
I just assumed mph cause he said the helicopter couldn't keep up. Most helicopter cruse between 130-160mph, especially the one they were using. 180 kmh is only 111mph

Haha, "only" 111. Most people get scared doing over 100 on a nice and wide freeway, and he's on DIRT! Doing 100+ on dirt is pretty nerve wracking I imagine. I havent gone faster than 90 on dirt *yet* bc of damned Ford Rangers' governor. But even 90, it's totally different than hauling on the street, man. Shit, even at 60, you feel like you're at warp speed. Braking distances, traction in general, is all so much less and combine that with narrow rough roads and trees/cactus/boulders/whatever blitzing past, it's just an entirely different experience.
