"Broke a bone in his leg and came back 8 weeks later" Not that tough..... Ryan dungey broke his colarbone in practice in ama sx and still rode and finished second. Thats "tough"
I was at MSA today and talked a bit with Gee. He was really nice and in an upbeat mood. Im glad he did great. Most certainly will be a great contender, lets hope that he does not blow out his tire like he did last year.
Also, Im really happy for Hans Lambert and Mat Beer, I met Hans and he was really stoked about qualifying, great guy and such an enthusiastic rider. Also, I was lucky to have a gondola ride with Matt Beer to the top before his Qualifying run, we got to talk about other things than racing and Im really happy that he qualified and positioned himself well.
I might come out pro-canadian but hey, we all tend to support our own Great results guys,
Always is big names comin out on top! I would love to see a no name guy just come along and totally stomp the competition. Just imagining Rob Warner commentating that run is making me laugh. "LOOOOK AT THE TIME!!!!!!!!!"
Yeah fairness is not a factor and yeah it would insult the other racers maybe. but dont you think it's a little extreme to be beating them by that much? It's insulting to them right now. Look at Athertons podcasts, Gee is always pissed when he looses by a little bit, and then Gwin come in and devastates. In my racing experience getting beat by an enormous amount is truly demoralizing. I don't ever see Gwin quitting but its ridiculous and i feel like many other people feel the same way.
At the end of the day its an every rider for themselves competitive sport, gwin is just at the top, he said himself no ones unbeatable, just means the other riders will have to step it up making great races.
My feelings for Mr.Gwin have gone something like this over the past few seasons..
Meh Fair play Well done mate OK. That's enough now. Damn Yank. Stop winning! OH come on that's just stupid!
And now it's bordering on a near hatred!
Don't get me wrong.. I respect the guy.. He's the best rider in the world at the moment, and a damn fast one at that.. I'm just fed up of his winning! haha!
Anyway.. Come on brits! Come on Danny! If all else fails, may Minnaar win! Whatever.. It's gonna be a good race!
It's pretty crazy that Gwin can get seconds ahead of one of, not the most consistently winning people in downhill. I know it's qualifying and anything can happen on race day, but I'm excited to see if there is still such a gap in times. Gwin has really raised the bar for everyone else. Everyone is pushing so hard for that #1 spot. It's been a great season so far.
@joshtp I said the exact same thing man. Gwin is a fantastic rider but its time for him to step off the podium and give the other competition a chance.
You've got to be kidding me Sea5ons. He should give up the podium and give the other competition a chance? Seriously? He's lost races. He's not invincible. He should absolutely NOT give up the podium if he's earning it. That is the biggest bunch of crap I've ever heard. He's earning those wins. Just like everyone else who wins. I highly doubt the other world cup riders want him to just hand over wins because you think he's being selfish. They want to earn their wins too. That's a damn insult to the other racers too, that you think they can't win and Gwin should just give them wins.
This is a raging example of the new generation raised to believe that fairness and equality actually exist. Guys, welcome to reality, fairness is an ABSTRACT concept, it has never, doesn't now, and never will exist! Let's have everybody win and give others a chance." This is competitive bike racing, come on! Socialism sucks and only promotes mediocrity, Atlas Shrugged people!
Even though im not a Gwin fan i still respect the man. Hes Gwinning everything cuz hes focused and hes a natural talented man machine. Yes hes boring to watch, but hell hes stepping up the game and that is refreshing.
Dont forget Minnaar here in Ste-Anne. I saw him race that course multiple times. He can step up and kill it like no one else. He has good chances of winning this.
This idea of fairness is born in primary school where everyone gets playing time in soccer and baseball, and everyone gets a trophy... lets leave competitive sports and views on government separate for petes pepper!
Also last i checked when the USSR was around it had some of the worlds greatest athletes so idk if u can say it promotes mediocrity
I kinda felt like that about him last season as he came from nowhere but now I think hats off to him. He's raised the bar again now it's up to everyone else to find that special ingredient in their breakfast.
Who's Pete and why does he have a pepper, I want one too, we should all have peppers, 'sounds fair to me Yes, it might be boring that Gwin is so dominant, oh well, we should appreciate the excellence he brings to the track and strive for the same. Back when Sam Hill was doing the same, I wanted to be that guy, and now I want to shred like Gwin. 'Talking about dominance, how 'bout Peat and Minnaar, those two account for about half of all the world cup victories in the past five years, and before them it was Vouilloz.....I love a tough competition, it's what keeps life fun.
Dont get me wrong its awesome to see Gwin put the US back on the map in terms of mountain biking on the World Cup scene, hes a complete animal and an awesome guy. The fact that hes this good and still such a humble guy speaks volumes about him as a person.
I just wish that everyone else would get a slight bit faster so the times were closer, i enjoy the nailbiters that all
It's interesting that Gwin get so much stick for winning everything. When Sam Hill did the same thing a few years ago, everybody loved him for it. Personally I think Gwin's "The Man', and if means that everybody else has to get quicker to beat him, then that can only be a good think.
No it's not a little extreme to beat them by that much. His job, what he gets paid to do, is to be the best damn athlete he can be, to perform at his peak, to go as fast as he can.
It's not his fault other people aren't as fast. And if you haven't noticed, the other riders ARE catching up. This isn't little league baseball, there is no mercy rule. Should the top 20 riders slow down so the riders in the bottom end of the field have a fair chance? Of course not. You either go fast and win, or you don't.
It's ridiculous people are only saying this now about a rider, but before when someone was dominating, it was perfectly okay.
Hopefully he'll give Gwinny a run for his money again. Minnaar still has a good chance, and Hill will be aching to take the win after Champs was last there
the ONLY reason to not like Gwin is personal. because he is an amazing athlete coupled with a level head and humble demeanor. such individuals should be celebrated.
I'm pumped to see Hill back in the top 10. He's been one of my favorite riders for so long, and I'm glad to see him making a comeback after these last couple seasons.
I wonder if the rest of the field isn't feel demoralized before the race even begins. Whether you like him or not, or hate him because he is American, his dominance is pretty amazing. Has there ever been a run like this in the modern era of DH racing?
I don't hate him because he's American, I just hate him because he's American.
Jokes aside, Gwin is on it again this year, however in regards to your comment 'Has there been a run like this in the modern era of DH racing', You obviously haven't seen Danny Harts 2011 World Champs run.
no, I saw that run, it was just amazing, one of my favorite videos to watch of all time, too bad it was done by a Brit (sorry, had to throw that in there because of your comments).. what I was referring to was a run as in a long term dominance that Gwin is on.. he just seems untouchable...
@barks5133, clearly billybobzia was referring to Gwin's consistency on qualis and on race day. It''s such a cliche to blurt out "Practice makes perfect" but on Gwin's case it's true.
I now realise what you meant about the run, it was past my bedtime when I replied and I've just slapped myself for my stupidity.
Also I'd just like to say I have nothing against Americans, just incase anyone doesn't realise it was a joke and accuses me of being racist or something.
Sam Hill Had 5 Wins in a row (really 6 if you count champery 2007, we know he would have smashed matti on a dry course) at the end of 07 / start of 08. Gwin hasnt managed 5 in a row yet but 7 wins out of the last 11 races is pretty insane
Ah, but the question is, will the field respond like they did before and drop their times significantly again? I sure hope so, it will make race day even more exciting.
Go Gwin! I really like the guy. He seems like a mellow dude from all the stuff I've seen on the internet. I'd also like to see Strobel post a good time as well as Beaumont. And if Gwin isn't sitting at the top, I'd love to see Gee or Stevie take top spot.
You've got to take your hat off to Aaron Gwin! his dedication and hard work is paying dividends, its TIME for the rest of the riders to up there game if they really want the glory.
Why all the haters on Gwin, is it the fact you don't have a 1/16 of his skill! Maybe you hate the fact that another American is owning the records like "Napalm" Palmer once did!
This season feels like a sort of golden age of Downhill for some reason. So many top players from today, tomorrow and yesterday in a pack and one guy out front.
I hate to say this, but it looks like Minnaar might finish 2nd AGAIN in the overall - for the 4th year in a row!!! Tell me he's not one frustrated dude!
Chris is still one of my favorite riders and I was hoping to see him in the final but unfortunately he didn't qualify. His wife Claire has done well though up in 8th position.
In terms of population, you guys are really punching above your weight.
When are we going to see a Kiwi woman come knock Rachel off the top, eh? I was hoping Tracey was going to do it but I'm losing hope by the race.
USA once dominated (in terms of depth of field), France, Australia, then Great Britain - I think NZ should be dominating in the not too distant future. The kiwis were all over Fort Bill.
haha I love how there was no american dh rider on the world cup podium for ten years and then when it final happens Gwin just straight dominates eveything
Also, Im really happy for Hans Lambert and Mat Beer, I met Hans and he was really stoked about qualifying, great guy and such an enthusiastic rider. gwin is doing what sam hill did back then, pulling everyone elses trousers down.

Other wise settle for second best and look on.
