Mountain Bike in my Head - JT Linville

Feb 25, 2012
by Lucas Alcalde
In the second episode of Mountain Bike In My Head, I interviewed JT Linville, an amateur rider living and training in Brevard, NC. He is 18 years old and is one of the coaches of Team FEAR (Future Elite American Riders). He has been riding for 4 years and competing for 2 years. JT enjoys mountain biking and is active in the local competitions. Here he shares how mountain biking provides a distraction from everyday life. JT is a well rounded rider that may seem laid back in person, but attacks the trails with a cool confidence. He is an up and coming talent I look forward to filming again.

In the next episode we go back to Brazil to film with Thiago Velardi, a Pro DH rider. Just like Luciano "KDra" said "Brazil lacks of infrastructure for the sport...", that said Thiago built his own trail starting off of his backyard. I could not believe how steep the trail was, very close to World Cup level!

To be honest I am not impressed with the video, I have expected a lot more. The trail looks fun but from what I have seen it can even be taken with AM hardtail.

Well, Stanev, I don't see you on the homepage. Stop hating and stfu. You should be supporting more up and coming riders like myself and my friend JT.

I think you may each be right, parts of the video I could have done on a cross bike, so maybe it was the train or/and vid that did not give JT the justice of his ability, yet we all see the importance of supporting the underdogs, in 2007 no one knew who Aaron Gwin was.

 I appreciate the comments.

@Andrew-Wing - I am not a hater believe me, however I have strong opinion when it comes to video / photo and biking. Don't take critics always the bad way Smile

@Racecase - I believe JT can show a lot more, I really hope to see it.

You shouldnt be making a edit till you are in cat 1 and are at least 30 seconds from the pros. My opinion

Some of you people are dicks! Gosh.

The trails are a little flat, so what? As long as you enjoy riding them I don't see the problem.
  • 16 3
in some of the spots he should put the bike into a higher gear to go a bit faster

 nice observation

Nice to see some keepin it real in NC! If people knew what it's like to mtn bike in NC they would understand why it's so cool to see someone getting this kind of exposure. not everyone can live in BC or WA where the trails are gnar.
  • 6 1
To my boy Jt's haters out there, this is just him riding some local fun trails. Unfortunately, his local trails arent gnarly freeride parks, so just wait till we get out and shred some gnarly stuff and support the people tryin to make their way riding free!

Tough crowd JT. I'm sure these E-riders will hate on anything. FYI I watched this kid send a massive dub on a 4x track on a brakeless 20 that "pros" wouldn't touch on their decked slalom rides. Way to rag on a motivated kid ripping his local trails guys. If you guys were really in a position to critique him you'd recognize that regardless of trail difficulty his form is on point and he's getting agressive.
  • 5 1
By the way that trail is neither flat nor smooth. And I've ridden it many times which is more than most of you can say.
  • 4 0
Was just thinking about that brakeless riding at the ETSU track, that was ridiculous. JT rips. The cedar rock trail is also great, but the camera work didn't really do it justice. Maybe someone could post a tutorial for budding film makers about perspectives and how to translate what you see when you're out there riding to film/video?
  • 2 0
Check out the cover of Bike Magazine's Bible this year. That shot was taken just off the Cedar Rock trail. It gives a little bit better idea of how steep it is. The video doesn't do it justice. And yes you can ride it on a hard tail, you can ride a hard tail on anything if you really want to. I'd like to see this kid ripping down the last section of Black Mountain in Pisgah. Can't hate on that!

He was talking a lot about training. So maybe he was just having a nice ride to forget what his dad was going through and train. I like to ride my dh bike xc keeps you fit and when you do go downhill you feel stronger. But the vid was ok.
  • 7 1
All mountain with a downhill bike?! Impressive.. (Y)

 cross country

Meh...you can see he has skill but i dont think the terrain is doing him justice.
  • 10 7
yo everyone give the kid a break, my bro JT can throw it down better than any of you people, i dont see you guys in any videos posted on here
  • 6 2
 well said!

 Agreed!

Seems like a good guy and I can directly relate to his issues with his Dad. I think what people are criticizing is the video production and NOT JT. No doubt he's a good rider and coming up in racing. 4 years riding and 2 racing? wow. That in itself is super impressive. Trail looks cool, JT has skills, but the vid didn't really do much to showcase it all in a clear package. I still watched it and enjoyed, but what with all the high-end vids on PB it didn't really shine. Is that fair?

Hope to see more of JT in the future. Keep training and focus on the positives in your life, it'll give you strength and confidence with the other stuff. Best of luck JT and JT's dad.

There are so many better trails around here for showcasing a DH rider, even sections in DuPont. If they had ventured into Pisgah, he may getting more respect from the Pinkbike teenagers
  • 5 1
Sick riding and filming. Can't wait to see J.T. crushing all you fools that are trying to talk smack!

"JT: The Revenge" is already scheduled to happen Smile

Awesome video!!! It's great to see people from NC riding... now I want to know where that trail is lol Wink
  • 4 0
He's riding Slickrock in Dupont. Great XC trails around but no true DH trails.
  • 3 1
Close but it's actually Big Rock. And if you're looking for some true DH then you need to check out Pisgah.
  • 1 0
That's what is mind boggling for me. There are a lot better trails than that around there. The mountains are steep not far from there.
  • 4 1
Some people just dont feel important unless there trying to bring someone else down. Keep up the good work and riding guys!
  • 4 2
I dont understand what peoples problems are, i like the music makes a change listening to something different to the usual shit.
  • 3 0
those trails look fun it would be pretty cool to ride down a piece of pretty much solid rock
  • 1 0
that trail was a bit depressing lol. Not much slaying of dirt berms makes me sad. Id like to see this kid shred somewere else cuz that didnt put justice to his riding. Cancer sucks dude. glad riding helps you escape from it.
  • 2 1
for everyone that's hate'n on this kid shame shame.....come on over to north c and find out for yourself. Im with jaybird951 keep ridn kid, looks fast to me and i ride that trail every chance i get.
  • 2 0
 agreed!
  • 4 2
Great Video! I tend to ride this trail WAY to much, its just so fun though.
  • 4 4
I'm bored with all the awesome video producing but lack of excitement in the riding. Where have all the freeride vids gone? Let see some fun instead of all this serious stuff. Freeride!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 1 2
There's a place for both the serious side of things (training/racing) and the funner stuff (freeride) on Pinkbike Wink Just because you found it lacked excitement doesn't mean it wasn't exciting for 10,000 other people.
