This new project is a freeride suspension frame from Dartmoor Bikes. Come up with a name for this frame (which will hit the market in 2014) and we will choose the best one. The winner will get the brand new Dartmoor Wish Pro 2013 complete bike. Read on for all the details.

New full suspension frame from Dartmoor Bikes with 180mm/200mm travel.

Need inspiration for a name? Here is some background on Dartmoor and the new frame

The brand's roots run deep in MTB dirt jump and street riding with several models of custom designed hardtail frames, but in the last few years Dartmoor has turned out more and more full suspension frames. The first project was the Shine frame which was one of the first FS frames designed from the beginning for slopestyle riding.

The second FS project coming out of the Dartmoor designers was the Wish - a perfect frame to build a bikepark, fun bike for all those who wish to leave the city jungle or backyard dirt jumps to taste some real MTB freeriding.

The new frame has adjustable 180mm/200mm travel and is built with a fully custom designed tubeset, CNC machined parts, 150x12mm hub spacing standard, asymmetrical swing arm construction, tapered head tube for integrated headsets and big bearings inside the frame to provide great stiffness and durability and survive the hardcore riding. The suspension system is rather simple and trouble free, but designers optimized it to achieve a linear characteristic of the first stage (some 40%) of the frame travel which is becoming strongly progressive in the second stage. This makes the frame sensitive to even small bumps, but is also forgiving on the really harsh landings.

Now it's your turn. Find the best name for this frame which will correspond to the freedom of riding through the forests and mountains and living in harmony with nature. Post your name as a comment under this article or at the Dartmoor-Bikes fanpage. The best one will be awarded with a brand new Dartmoor Wish Pro 2013 complete bike. The contest ends on the 29th of March and the winner will be announced on the 2nd of April.

Check Dartmoor-Bikes website or catalog if you want to learn more about the brand and their product range.

@tmargeson : The Nomad is, as every VPP bike, a dual linkeage bike. So suspension has two degrees of liberty.
This frame hasn't. It's a major difference.

Dartmoore- A prison in England... minus the "e".

The Dartmoore A-block, which is a section of a prison. It works because when you sell the same bike with a different level of components you can do the C-block for the entry level, B-Block for mid, A-Block for the best...

or they can call it the Dartmoore Shank. That's pretty neat-o sounding along with the Dartmoore Mutiny (which was a historic prison riot at Dartmoor.

i feel bad for the guys that have to filter through 4000+ name suggestions. My vote is still for RADIX (latin for root) tree roots, the roots of riding that this frame evolved from, its commonly used as a numerical root (2 being the radix of binary, 10 for what we use) which is cool because that opens up a bunch or references to geometry and such. Ya dig?

 What about the "Dartmoor Tempo"

Tempo has a multitude of definitions, but the most important are 'speed' and 'rhythm.'

On long travel FR / DH bike like this, made for hitting trails with SPEED and hitting big jumps with RHYTHM it seems like the perfect name.

Additionally, the word "Tempo" has a similar meaning in Polish, and given that Dartmoor is largely based in Poland (from my understanding,) the name would bring the bike back to the company's roots!

Finally, it fits in well with the other names in the lineup - "Shine" "Wish" "Tempo"... it just rolls off the tongue Wink

I suggest a name referring to one of the Dartmoor myths.

Dartmoor Black dog (or hound)

"Sometimes called “The Devils Hunting Pack” these beasts have been witnessed and talked about for centuries. The legend states that when Squire Dartmoor ( believed to be an evil and wicked man) died during the 1600′s, the Devil sent his own hunting pack into Dartmoor to “drag the soul of Squire Dartmoor, screaming into Hell.”..."

 Symbolism yadayada

A Hound corresponds to the" freedom of riding through the forests and mountains" because it is a trained animal and therefore does as its master(rider) commands.

"Living in harmony with nature.",a dog is mans best friend. The cooperation between a man and a dog is harmonious; which should give the impression of the rider and bike being rhythmical and coordinated.

Since Wish Bear and Funshine Bear are both part of the original series (thank you wikipedia) my vote is to name it "Good Luck". Good Luck Bear rides around on a 4 leaf clover helicopter, how cool is that?
My other vote is for "Champ". Mountain biking is a sport, right?
"Daydream" would also work. I day dream about riding my bike in the woods all the time. I am doing it right now...

'Dartmoor Hel Tor' The most famous person to emerge from the Dark Ages was the legendary figure of King Arthur. Most of the tales are about his famous battles with invading hoards, dragons, and evil denizens of the underworld, including the Devil himself. As counties go Devonshire is no exception although he does not seem to have stayed too long on Dartmoor, judging by the Arthurian legends he must have made a whistle-stop tour. However he did stay long enough to do battle with the Devil and put the king of the underworld firmly in his place. Near to Moretonhampstead are two hills Hel tor and Blackingstone. Originally they were just plain old hill tops as bare as a badgers arse with not a rock in site.. Then one day King Arthur engaged the devil in a hurling match. Presumably the loser would be banished from the land. So Arthur stood on Hel tor and the Devil stood on Blackingstone. The whistle blew and they began hurling mighty quoits at each other, before long they were landing everywhere, down in the valley and on both hillsides. Eventually as you would expect King Arthur won the match and the Devil in a fit of temper turned the last two remaining quoits into rock. Hence today Hel tor and Blackingstone are capped with two small tors or rather petrified quoits. however he did stay long enough to do battle with the Devil and put the king of the underworld firmly in his place. Near to Moretonhampstead are two hills Hel tor and Blackingstone

Dartmoor Denizen... What is a denizen you might ask? An inhabitant, resident or person who regularly frequents a place. To me, my relationship with a bike is as nearly as important as my relationship with other human beings so this name gives a human dimension to the bike. Also, the idea of frequenting a place makes sense. Our bikes are meant to be in the forests and away from all of the stupid rules and regulations of the city. It's all about freedom and we get this way when we're out on the trails, especially our favorite trails, which we frequent often. Those trails become our second homes.

 >> Dartmoor PONY

"In upland areas where conditions are more harsh, only the hardiest of breeds survive including the famous Dartmoor ponies."

"...only the hardiest of breeds survive..." - I'm referring here to dartmoor's frames and their strength in the specific environment.

- the Dartmoor Pony has lived in south-western England for centuries and is used for a variety of disciplines. Because of the extreme weather conditions experienced on the moors, the Dartmoor is a particularly hardy breed with excellent stamina. Over the centuries it has been used as a working animal by local tin miners and quarry workers. They are used for hunting, trail riding, showing, jumping, dressage and driving, as well as everyday riding, they are strong and reliable animals as will be the new frame. We have the conection between man and ponies during the years now it's between man and the bike - Dartmoor PONY coming 2013...

Maybe for some it's sounds a bit childish but "I'm going to ride my new dartmoor pony!" sounds sweeet when you know what a machine we're talking about!

OK Dartmoor company - I have 3 suggestions for you!

>> Dartmoor MIST

"Probably the most feared aspect of Dartmoor is the dreaded mists, they can appear without warning and blanket the moor in an impenetrable and visionless cloak, catching the unwary and occasionally leading them into a bottomless mire. What started out in a stroll bathed in brilliant sunshine can end up in a navigational nightmare just in order to get safely back to civilisation."

- basically a mist is a blanket of low cloud which considering the height and location of Dartmoor means they can be a common occurrence. They can appear and disappear without warning what I'm referring to ascending and descending with the bike and the power of nature. It's sounds a bit mystical too. You can make also a really nice promotional video on the same theme about the new frame - the mist, the forest, the leaves, the drops, the mud, the smell ... A dartmoor mist can lead an unprepared walker into difficulties by enveloping him and many times travelers have been lost.
Never get lost with the new Dartmoor MIST - coming 2013...

 DARTMOOR CHINOOK
Według Wikipedia:
Chinook (z języka miejscowych Indian chinook = 'pożeracz śniegu') - ciepły, suchy i porywisty wiatr typu fenowego, wiejący ze wschodnich stoków Gór Skalistych na równiny.

According to Wikipedia:
Chinook winds (pron.: /ʃɪˈnʊk/), often called chinooks, commonly refers to foehn winds[1] in the interior West of North America, where the Canadian Prairies and Great Plains meet various mountain ranges, although the original usage is in reference to wet, warm coastal winds in the Pacific Northwest of the United States of America.[2]

Chinook is claimed by popular folk-etymology to mean "eater", but it is really the name of the people in the region where the usage was first derived. The reference to a wind or weather system, simply "a Chinook", originally meant a warming wind from the ocean into the interior regions of the Pacific Northwest of the USA (the Chinook people lived near the ocean, along the lower Columbia River).

Mountain biking at its heart is an exploration; we aim to explore the bounds of our abilities and our courage to charge harder and fly farther. It's also an exploration in the physical sense; mountain biking isn't only about us but it is about communing with nature, and finding those locations and moments that amaze us. Finally, riding for us is about increasing the capabilities of the human/machine combination, a mutual dependency for success. The connecting factor is a sense of awe. At the end of the day, we want more than anything else, to be left in awe at the capabilities of nature, of ourselves, and of our machine.

The freedom of riding through the forests and mountains and living in harmony with nature is something that can only be described as sublime.

I'd like to introduce you to the Dartmoor Sublime.

To be sublime is to have such excellence, grandeur, and beauty as to inspire great admiration or awe. Find Sublime, Be Sublime, Live Sublime, ride Dartmoor.

Explanation for the name: Buddha describes nirvāṇa as the perfect peace of mind possessed by one who is liberated. It is to be distinguished from peaceful moods arising from a temporary absence of anger, sensual desire, anxiety and other afflicting states. Nirvāṇa is an 'ultimate' peace that is achieved after a lengthy process of mind-body transformation.

Dartmoor Glow It's a snappy word that fits with the previous brands of Shine and Wish and also with the theme of something aspirational. It also follows the same theme of something a little untraditional in mtb terms. Glow represents the feeling gained after a days shredding out in nature and takes that feeling back into the 'normal' world. It is the feeling that you get from riding and how that is shared with friends, not something that can really be put into words easily but something that radiates out and makes you excited about riding just by watching videos or chatting with mates. It's that shared consciousness amongst riders no-matter what the language or nationality. If you wanted to get a bit more out there it could be spelled Glo, the spelling would stick in peoples minds because it's different, it's only 3 letters and is very similar to Go on a subconscious level.

Knowing very little about this Dartmoor company, this bike seems to be pretty straight foreward using some proven design methods. Looks to be solid in the long run. But I don't see the "assymetrical swingarm construction". It just looks like a bike that you could ride day in and day out. Hard to say without any geometry or specs.

 Dartmoor Slapstick

The name "slapstick" comes from the batacchio or bataccio — called the "slap stick" in English — a club-like object composed of two wooden slats used in commedia dell'arte. When struck, the battacchio produces a loud smacking noise, though little force transfers from the object to the person being struck. Actors may thus hit one another repeatedly with great audible effect while causing very little actual physical damage. Along with the inflatable bladder (of which the whoopee cushion is a modern variant), it was among the earliest special effects that a person could carry.
While the object from which the genre is derived dates from the Renaissance, theater historians argue that slapstick comedy has been at least somewhat present in almost all comedic genres since the rejuvenation of theater in church liturgical dramas in the Middle Ages.[citation needed] (Some argue[weasel words] for instances of it in Greek and Roman theater, as well.) Beating the devil off stage, for example, remained a stock comedic device in many otherwise serious religious plays. Shakespeare also incorporated many chase scenes and beatings into his comedies, such as in his play The Comedy of Errors. Building on its later popularity in the nineteenth and early twentieth-century ethnic routines of the American vaudeville house, the style was explored extensively during the "golden era" of black and white, silent movies directed by figures Mack Sennett and Hal Roach and featuring such notables as Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, the Marx Brothers, the Keystone Kops, and The Three Stooges. Slapstick is also common inTom and Jerry and Looney Tunes Merrie Melodies. Silent slapstick comedy was also popular in early French films and included films by Max Linder and Charles Prince.

Find the best name for this frame which will correspond to the freedom of riding through the forests and mountains and living in harmony with nature.

"Dartmoor Muskie"

Adult muskellunge (a large, relatively uncommon freshwater fish of North America) are apex predators where they occur naturally. Thus, a freeride/ DH frame should bear the name of a relatively uncommon, but agressive and feared predator. The name also somewhat matches the style of other Dartmoor frames (Quinnie, Hornet, Mana, etc).

Hey guys here our my thoughts on what the new frame should be called, the "Dartmoor Liberty"

I think this new frame should be called dartmoor "liberty" because Liberty is defined as, the power to do as one pleases and freedom from physical restraint. A bike is a perfect example of liberty because a bike gives you power, power to reach new mile stones, power to succeed and conquer. While also giving you freedom from physical restraint, freedom from the office, freedom from the wife (for a few hours) and freedom from stress of the everyday life. At least that is what a bike is to me and i get the feeling of "liberty" every time I ride my bike so i think it is a great name for dartmoor's new frame that looks to be an amazing!

 Dartmoor "Succubus "

In folklore traced back to medieval legend, a succubus is a female demon or supernatural entity that appears in dreams, who takes the form of a human woman in order to seduce men, usually through sexual intercourse. The male counterpart is the incubus. Religious traditions hold that repeated intercourse with a succubus may result in the deterioration of health or even death.

In modern fictional representations, a succubus may or may not appear in dreams and is often depicted as a highly attractive seductress or enchantress; whereas, in the past, succubi were generally depicted as frightening and demonic.

Mountain biking is like a war - constantly reinforcement. New technology, new ideas, new goals.
In Poland we have a huge potential in people and companies who may conquer mountain biking world. Desire is a huge. This FS frame should be manifest that we can compete on an equal level. This frame is inconspicuous but still powerful. What to buy specializeds, treks, tranitions, konas or other if we have our own power. What is more partisans was usually hidden in forests and mountains - in harmony with natureSmile They act by a trick, without destroing environment. Just feel it;]

I like how the Shine and Wish are the companies start to the full suspension - both have soft consenants, 1 syllable, positive words. The trend should continue with that. They've noted freedom, forests, mountains, harmony and nature. The t-shirts they have say "Ride Your Way". The next bike should be named "the Way". The t-shirts say alot more now - literally - ride your Way. When we ride we find our way, it's the way forward, show me the way, make my way, etc.

 Dartmoor Renegade.

It goes against the DJ/Street roots, but at the same time the Renegade beckons a new way of thinking. Sure it goes against the original ideals of riding perfectly sculpted jumps or concrete, but it makes its own path along dirt and stone - as is the world of freeride in the middle of literally nowhere. This is certainly not a bad thing, as ideals and people change and grow as they explore new areas of life. It is the revolutions and the renegades behind them that spark these new ways of thinking.

(Yes I may be just procrastinating on my homework, but hey English is a fun language and bikes are way more fun to talk about)

Its the place that gets us through rough times. It brings a smile to your face and I am only speaking of it. We anxiously await the moment and can feel the grips in our hands, light yet firm; the pedals under our feet, planted and strong; and the bike moving almost rhythmically underneath us. We anxiously await every chance to get back on the saddle of our trusty steed. The Dartmore Brood.

It should be called the Dartmoor "Liberty"

I think this new frame should be called dartmoor "liberty" because Liberty is defined as, the power to do as one pleases and freedom from physical restraint. A bike is a perfect example of liberty because a bike gives you power, power to reach new mile stones, power to succeed and conquer. While also giving you freedom from physical restraint, freedom from the office table, freedom from the wife (for a few hours) and freedom from stress of the everyday life.
At least that is what a bike is to me and i get the feeling of "liberty" every time I ride my bike so i think it is a great name for darmoor's new frame that looks to be an amazing bike!

I've never left a comment, but for the chance to win a Dartmoor, it's worth a shot :-)

To me, a park bike should be strong and maneuverable, allowing to ride hard in tight singletrack, fast in open areas, getting air, etc.

Dartmoor Buzzard : The buzzard is a medium to large bird of prey which can be found in Europe. It has a robust body, and lives in wooded and open areas, where it prefers to hunt.

Dartmoor Harrier: The harrier is a bird of prey which hunts by flying low in open areas. Also a fighter jet, some of them able to take off vertically.

The name encapsulates the idea of FreeRiding. It represents the idea that you and your bike should be totally at home on the mountains, in the bush or any time you get a chance to get off Pinkbike and go play in the dirt.  Dartmoor Ecstasy.

To me this is the definitive word to describe the feeling of shredding the perfect trail with a bike which seems to be an extension of your own body. I often find myself forgetting all my worries; simply focussing on the flow and rush of the trail. Having spoken to many riders -like myself- it is clear to see that they think along the same lines. Mountain bikers are loyal to the sport because of the 'feeling' not only of achievement but also of complete bliss, and of course, adrenaline.

Other names I believe would be suitable;

Now, I don't know if I get another entry but I also have another name in mind.. What about calling it with the Dartmoor One? As in One with your bike and nature.. There will be no lower or higher end model selection here... This will be a HIGH end bike. If you are chosen for this God of a bike, you must be a God of some sort yourself..

It refers to the most important life stage of a Hindu man in which he renounces his faith and sets off into the woods in order to become a "forest dweller" to seek realisation leaving all the ties of family life and the world as he knews it behind. Symbolises the shift dartmoor bikes are undergoing by adapting to another discipline.

For the "name this frame" competition, my suggestion is "Radix" RADIX is latin for ROOT. This ties in nicely in several ways the root of riding, tree roots, dartmoor's roots, and more.

My other suggestion is "somnium." SOMNIUM, Latin for dream fits really well with the WISH. Wishes and dreams....

 DARTMOOR "PEREGRINE"

( wikipedia: "The Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), also known as the Peregrine and historically as the Duck Hawk in North America is a widespread bird of prey in the family Falconidae. A large, crow-sized falcon, it has a blue-grey back, barred white underparts, and a black head and "moustache". As is typical of bird-eating raptors, Peregrine Falcons are sexually dimorphic, females being considerably larger than males. The Peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching over 322 km/h (200 mph) during its characteristic hunting stoop (high speed dive), making it the fastest member of the animal kingdom. According to a National Geographic program, the highest measured speed of a Peregrine Falcon is 242 mph (389 km/h).
The Peregrine's breeding range includes land regions from the Arctic tundra to the tropics. It can be found nearly everywhere on Earth, except extreme polar regions, very high mountains, and most tropical rainforests. The only major ice-free landmass from which it is entirely absent is New Zealand. This makes it the world's most widespread raptor and one of the most widely found bird species." )
