Norway is a beautiful (albeit cold and expensive) place. There's plenty to look at, even in the gondola on the way up. This is especially true if people are mowing their grass roofs.
The start gate leads into 4 or 5 massive jumps.
4 tables, one hip right out of the gate.
After the jumps, you dive into the woods... which seem to be one endless rock garden.
...oh and roots are on top of the rocks and everywhere else. Slick in the daily rainstorms.
Oh hey, World Cups are supposed to be Hard. Finally, this one has it right. I have never seen Sam Hill this excited to ride a track. Everyone else had better hang on and send it. There's line choices everywhere, and Mr Hill is a legend when it comes to lines.
It's hard to convey just how steep some of the track is. Average speeds will be insanely high.
Jacy imitates what some people will look like if they try a possibly massive stepdown. Ya, that's the take off behind him... about 15 feet up.
The last rock garden has Sam all smiles.
This is just the entrance...
Send it!
More rocks.
Yup, more rocks. Same rock garden.
This entire section is one gnarly rocky section of pain. Hope you have strong hands and brakes and lots of air in those tires...
Norway is gorgeous, even when the storms head up the valley.
STEEP berms.
Dust??
Some off camber to complete the puzzle. This track truly has everything a racer could want. If you don't like it, you should take up ping pong or put on your big boy pants and harden up.
One last section. This Is WAY rougher than it seems.
Track looks awesome! Definitely going to wake up early to watch this one. Can't believe people were saying this track wasn't WC worthy last week after the preview video...
I agree with you and cannot understand these people. I dont know who said it but it was a Nascar driver. "Because it is so easy, its so hard to win this race". So I want to say that the riders will push each other to the limits of the track, no matter how easy the couse may be.
That track looks better than all the other tracks from this season. So many rocks and not a ton of sections that look completely manmade and manicured. Will be a sick race for sure.
Only the beginning jumps and those steep berms lower resemble anything bike parkish. This is gonna be a good one!
Hill may like this track, but once again it has Gwin's name written all over it, unless his mechanic Munk screws up his brakes again.
some people are idiots, all i can say. It's not the gnarliest track I've ever seen, but it still looks pretty tech, and it's long enough to be pretty tiring when you think how rough it is! Looks like a proper WC track to me.
Hey Protour, his name is MONK. and he's been around before jesus. MONK didn't screw up the brakes.. stop bieng a f*cktwit and licking gwins ballsack, ok? thanks.
I'm pretty sure, but not positive, that Monk messed up his brakes, hes not the mechanic everyone thinks he is. It was either him or Shimano that completely screwed over Gwin on the most important racing day of his life, and Monk seems like the more likely candidate, given that the brakes were working fine until then.
Either way, Gwin's fans, and Gwin himself deserve an explanation and a sincere apology regarding this issue, and I WILL NOT SLEEP, and will remain vigilant until the truth is revealed! Are you listening Shimano, and Trek World Racing Âż?Âż? All of Gwin's fans deserve an explain, I encourage you all to email them, we can't let this happen again to the fastest man on wheels. I'm considering starting a campaign on Facebook, but am very busy raising awareness on the global warming issue, so if someone else wants to take the torch and run with it, it's your baby to steal.
Protour, I am not a Gwin fan at all, and a I agree with you that sabotage is a possibility. It's funny that in all developed countries everyone immediately dismisses sabotage as a possibility. He's had those brakes for a year, why is it that they fail in the world champs final, of all races? Coincidence? Who are you kidding?
I don't believe it was anything Monkdog did inside the brakes, because I'm pretty sure he won't ever actually take them apart. Bleeding yes, stripping down probably not. I could be wrong, but I would think that if there was any striping down going on then Shimano would do it, not the mechanic.
Which leaves Shimano themselves, or someone else. Would Shimano do it? Deny one of their greatest assets and chief development riders a shot at the world title? No chance.
Then who? Maybe someone who had access to the bike between Monkdog prepping it and Gwin riding it. Loosen a banjo? Stab a line with a screwdriver? Stick a needle between the seal and the cylinder?
It smells fishy to me.
As I said I don't like Gwin but I'd rather see him fairly bested on a full run.
One thing is for sure. No Japanese company in history has ever admitted fault over a mechanical fault, and Shimano won't over this, even if it was one.
Jaame, Thanks for not just dismissing what I wrote as nonsense, it's good to see another non-dogmatic open-minded thinker in here who doesn't just agree with what everyone else says.
It wouldn't take alot to sabotage someones brakes, that's for sure. And the fact that both brakes went out at the same time would seem to point to that as a legitimate possibility.
But the crucial question is who could have had the opportunity to sabotage them, and where? The obvious answer here is another racer, since they are usually the only other people around near the start. So next you have to ask who would have the biggest motive, and who else was around his bike? The riders who qualified near him obviously would be around him. Pretty sure Minnar wouldn't do it, he already had a big win this year. Sick Mick wouldn't do it cause hes a fellow man of faith and they share fellowship together. I wouldn't implicate my countryman Smith cause Canadians are usually honest. Who was desperate for a win that day, someone who has worked hard but hasn't won anything big in awhile? Who seemed the most disappointed after the race? Hill wouldn't do it, he has had a dominant career. We need more investigating about who was around Gwin's bike, pictures and video review, interviews, etc...
I dont think Monk would have intentionally sabotaged them either, but I have heard stories of him being forgetfull.
You won't be saying that in a few years, once you realize it's just gonna get progressively worse every year. This summer will seem mild by comparison, did you not hear about all the farmers killing their pigs, or the birds committing suicide up here? You and Romney might think it's a joke, but it's actually the biggest tragedy in human history, and likely the final tragedy!
Peaty won practice today, but no word yet on what happened to Gwin's brakes. But lots of racers are still talking about it and speculating......are you listening Shimano? The bad p.r.won't end till we know the truth, I'm boycotting all Shimano products until then, other Gwin fans and truth fans should too.
That stepdown will be no letdown for the fans, they need a camera there, Red Bull!
i'm lining up some 2013 saint brakes right now. Boycotting shimano? hahahhahahah!! like they care about one middle aged guy from vancouver ranting on a website about conspiracy theories!!!! not the sharpest hot dog in the pack are ya?
aside from the fact that we're supposed to believe that the guy with no photos or videos etc is a WC racer...
should probably stop feeding the troll now, but it is pretty damn funny some of the shit that he's coming out with.
I love how PB commenters think that photos and videos "prove" someone is a good rider/racer. I love how people think comments on PB "prove" knowledge of ANYthing, including bike riding/handling skill.
PB is NOT reality. The internet is not a trail or race track. Posting photos of bicycles doesn't prove anything. Posting video footage doesn't prove anything. This is real life, not a video game. The proof is in person, not on the internet.
Protour's comments are entertaining. Why are so many of you busying yourselves with "proof" questions that supposedly are answered in PB user profile's photos/videos, or absence thereof? Tons of great riders and racers don't bother with PB, or if they use it, they use it superficially and jokingly.
It's only poseurs who think that comments and profile images are proof of something.
As for the Hafjell track, it looks like the rock gardens will weed out Bike Parkers.
yeah of course it doesn't prove anything, but my point still stands, he could be anybody. I could create another PB profile and start telling people i'm a WC racer, doesn't make it true. Either way, his posts are completely retarded, regardless of who he is.
They're only "retarded" if you work from the irrational assumption that PB is a hotbed of deep intellectual and meaningful discussion regarding serious global issues that affect everyone.
If you pay attention you will notice that Protour tends to provoke discussion wherever the comment thread is full of stupid fanboi cheering or robot regurgitation of ad copy.
No matter how much anyone here loves riding bikes, it's still just riding bikes. It's not life-or-death, poverty-or-riches stuff at issue here. It's SWPL narrowed to a bunch of e-riding dorks who are wasting time on the clock at work, driving up the price of everything because their time-wasting is like theft from the employer.
Hooray for the 21st Century, employees slacking on the Toobz on the company dime, and all of them stupid robots who just spew fanboi nonsense and nonthinking Please Include Me In Your Cool Kids Clique blather.
It's just riding, it's not life or death, but it could be life or death in the case of brake failure on a shit steep track covered with rocks. Specifically, Shimano prototypre brake failure on Gwin's bike at the world champs. Both brakes failed you say? Wow, what a coincidence. Both brakes were running fine for 18 months and then suddenly, as if by magic, they both failed at the same time. How could that be explained? They are both made to such exacting tolerances and used for the same number of seconds, suffering the same amount of wear leading to a spontaneous failure? If you believe that, you'll believe anything.
I think for motive you have to look at who dislikes Gwin, who has gone longest without a win, who is getting paid the most by SRAM, who has recently been dropped by Shimano, whose ride Gwin got...
The truth will out, however long it takes.
I suggest two levels of thread for PB in the future. One for real journalism and direct questioning, and one for stupid fanboi cheering or robot regurgitation of ad copy. Someone said if the journos probe too much we'll have no more interviews with Trek or Shimano for years. Since I have yet to see one which was even remotely interesting, I think that's a worthy sacrifice to uncover the truth of the Gwingate scandal.
oh man this is defently gonna be the best race of the season by far, i hope like hell Hill takes the win it seems like a track that may just proove better for his flat pedals!
I have ridden the track this summer and its not dead hard or crazy by any means. It's a cool track, and if I can ride it, it should be pretty straightforward to Pro's. Champery for example is crazy among many other superlatives.
funny thing is a few days ago a tonne of people where WHINING like no tomorrow saying it looked well shit www.pinkbike.com/news/Hafjell-World-Cup-Track-video-2012.html look at all the abuse this track got haha it looks intense as hell...wonder how many of them are feeling stupid right about now
My friends (apparently on a couple of pictures there, Cheers Jon and E-beth ) reported that the middle rockgarden Råbölstien has been actualy made slightly easier comparing to last year's European Champs.
I saw a 15 yr old there last year on Spec P.3 with normal dirt jump tyres Dunno if he made it all the way but he sure tried, he rode all day in the bike park on it.
Sam + DUST = just like home (I know its europe and it more than likely wont stay like that though) Good luck this weekend Sam and bring home the year strong mate. Going to be an unreal race, track looks insane. Good luck to all the riders, but I would love to see Sam pin it and win it.
I'd love to see it too, but I reckon there's going to be some Gwinning this weekend, Sam will be pinning, but he won't be grinning. I bet someone will be binning on all those rocks, mind.
I hope that the video coverage is better. I understand running 8000 ft of vid cable would suck but coverage with freecaster was better. I'm stoked Warner is with us but still.
I've been riding in this bike park all summer. And YES, it's that awesome. Those rockgardens are pretty hard even at amateur-level speeds and I can't even imagine how gnarly they'll be for the pro's! Those four jumps are seriously big. Serious airtime. A shame we won't be seeing Cedric Gracia styling it up. That steep mid-part section right after the first wood sections likes high speeds and I'm looking forward to watch those riders get loose!
It's an achievment to get through the chicken run in the gnarliest rockgarden (Råbølstien) without having to put your foot down for a second or two. I live near Hafjell, and I've ridden there for three years, and I'm pretty sure that I can count the times I've made that section without stopping with one hand. The steepest part, which they are riding in the wc, is just insane, and I still haven't heard of anyone who hasn't had any trouble with it. It has been countless flats, broken rims and crashes in that section in previous races.
Humm, should suit Hill, hope he does well, I bet he misses that top step.
But on another note, like someone said, Gwin proved he can ride tech stuff pretty damn fast in Val di Sole, so it should be interesting to see how he does here.
I can see Sam or Gee finally taking a win here, They both deserve it (Gee was oh so close at Worlds, but should've taken the "man's" line and not the "chicken" line, Minaar got him there I think), and while Gwinn will surely be looking to avenge the mechanical and bad feeling from Worlds, don't know if he'll risk it so much seeing as he has the title already.
They were talking about the chicken line bieng worth .4 of a second and casing that jump would have cost him .1 so there you go. It could have been different. Or if Brosnan didn't crash, or if Hill went faster, or if Smith went faster blah blah blah...
Where Peaty went off. Most racers, Gee included, took the wide line around, which was slower. Peaty, Minaar and a few others took the straight "man line" which was said to be around half a second faster. Casing the jump didn't cost him that much, he still had the speed to clear the 2nd one no trouble and was full on on the pedal section.
the wide line was only the same speed really, it allowed the rider to carry much better speed down the following section that is why gee (and most of the rest of them) took it, the fact there was more risk in the other one does not really bother the top guys, people like gee take the line they think is fastest not the one that is safer (i mean really a safe wc track??????)
yes on the exit to the section but that time would then be made up on the following straight
look at the splits, gee lost no time on the lower section, he only carried his 0.5 deposit from earlier on in the course
i rode parts of this track when i went for riding holiday there and honestly it really wasnt easy its defenetly WC standered. I stacked it hard on one of the jumps that hurt and my lil bro smashed his face and chiped a tooth in one of the rock gardens. awsome track carnt wait for the race
I think the photo above that sums it up. Great view down the one of many rock gardens. Should be a sweet race. Might be nice to see the bikes set up a bit softer and ploughing the rock gardens. I pity anyone who falls off .... compound fractures galore.
You never quite know in Hafjell, i was up there a few weeks back and it was said to be around 20mm of rain on both Saturday and Sunday... We ended up with 3 small showers on Saturday and sun all Sunday. Hoping for good weather though, we are driving up tomorrow for 4 days of biking and watching the pros at work.. And i guess a few beers on the side
Track looks sweet. I had thought that based on the videos posted it looked a little weak for a WC track but these pictures seems to give it a better perspective.
Lots of Sports do it in both Summer and Winter Sports. Not a new concept and not even a bad concept, you can argue easily that the racers are not always at their best at the very end of a long season.
So I want to say that the riders will push each other to the limits of the track, no matter how easy the couse may be.

THIS is a DH race track -- steep, fast, totally sketchy with some serious consequences, judging from a few of those tight trees.
Also, can I mention how much I love the write up? "...Put on your big boy pants and harden up." Awesome. Just awesome.

stoked since i am going there
