Human’s have always had an innate need to grow and push the boundaries in whatever we do.

Some of us however more so than others and often at great sacrifice and risk to themselves.

Why is this so and what are the forces that are at play that brings about the extraordinary?

What are the elements that propel the few to rise above the noise of the pack and stay ahead of the game?

In the competitive sport of mountain biking like many other endeavours champions are not born but made.

Above the noise is a film about 6 world class mountain bikers each of whom are unique and individual in their quest for extraordinary performance yet unified and fashioned by a hidden spirit, belief and calling to perform beyond the rest.

Through these riders we uncover the catalytic elements that need to be evidenced to provide for explosive performance and the fuel that is necessary to sustain it.

It is our hope that this film will provide fresh inspiration, insight and wisdom to all competitive mountain bikers across the globe and challenge and confront their reality and thinking of what it really takes to rise Above the Noise.

Nice, not to hate on dirt jumpers but I'm happy to see there won't be any dirt jumping segments in this vid.

I just love watching riders get loose and sideways- whether it be down a hill or over a pack. Not so much of a fan of 'spin to win' contest style riding to be honest- but good flow will always look good no matter what you ride imo.

yip fully agree, it's like in the 2010 Rampage, the Claw and Gee's runs were way more explosive and pinned in big all mountain/ free ride way than what's his name who won it because of a 360.

I think its fair to say that spinning a 50 by 50ft drop on a full on downhill bike is definitely worthy of a win, no?

flag gavlaa (Jun 21, 2012 at 4:52)
Zink's 3 was win worthy fo sure. I'm not denying that (nor should anyone as it's absolutely massive!!). However, if I had to watch Matt Miles or Cam Zink for the rest of my days I'd go with Matt (although Silvia is largely to blame for that!!!). Everyone is different and variety is the spice of life- I love flow, some like speed, others like tricks. As long as people are true to themselves and get the most enjoyment from MTB then that's all that matters.

Agree with @aaronclixby7... I love dirt jumping as a sport, but it's very hard for a dj video to impress me because they're all pretty much the same thing, whereas fr/dh videos always have their own unique characteristics that make them fun to watch.

i think the dirt jump sport has almost reached its limit ... it is pretty rare that you will see a full new trick these days.
Alot of people pumped the sport to the spot were it is now (like J. Cowan for example) but i cant imagine how dirt jumping will look in 2020
the tricks will still be sick thats for sure ! but i think there wont be to much new tricks than today.

its pretty hard imagine a dirt jumper doing a 1080 thailwhip or similar

flag gavlaa (Jun 22, 2012 at 3:33)
I've thought that a few times about surfing and skating- but have been proven wrong! I also don't think it's fair to measure the progression of DJ solely in terms of tricks. What about progression with the courses/trails being built? ..and the bikes being ridden? You could also argue that MTB dirtjumping has progressed massively in terms of the number of people doing it these days. If you asked me whether I'd prefer someone to land a 1080 triple whip or to have sick trails everywhere, I know what I'd answer. Tricks are overrated!

I don't know if it's just me, I suppose I have seen a fair few mountain biking movies in my time, but for a trailer for a new video it looks pretty mediocre. I think if you are going to do a new mountain biking video these days you have to step it up and do something great, something that truly stands out, this just looks like the same old thing to me. I mean how many more movies are there going to be with close up shots of riders faces interlaced with some bullshit dialogue coupled with some guy riding down some track/dropand kicking up some dirt? Granted the finished article will no doubt be better, but it is all a bit /yawn now. I know I will get negged for this, but I am just speaking the truth, how many more videos like this can they make before we start going backwards.

flag WAKIdesigns (Jun 21, 2012 at 1:52)
I agree that it is a bit mediocre. At the same time stepping up is finished since Life Cycles, at least for a few years to come. That movie introduced a few new ways to make a bike movie, not just stunning cinematography. The only way now is to either sit for few years working on something ground breaking (just as Life Cycles crew did) or find a completely new way to make a movie. There is no linear growth of pushing the limits, sometimes there are plateaus, and we're on one now. You can build a bigger and bigger jump and suddenly you will realize it makes no sense - sometimes jumping a small one in different way is what opens completely new possibilities. That's why hucking is dead, that's why Kranked and NWD movies are over

Expect that from big films like strength in numbers and life cycles e.c.t not free internet ones. If you have ever tried making a film its a lot harder than you think, thats whys people stick to what they know looks good and dont experiment with every shot.

Its just a movie about riding. It's just you, bike and nature. There is only so much you can do with it, unless you have some obstract way of thinking about things. The movie looks interesting to watch.
  • + 1
flag redrook (Jun 21, 2012 at 4:40)
Thinking the exact same thing. The pretentious pseudo-philosophical talking over slow motion and b&w faces has been done to death, case in point Strength in Numbers was completely ruined by the amount of talking. It's about riding, I honestly don't care what you have to say about riding, let your riding do the talking!
  • + 2
flag WAKIdesigns (Jun 21, 2012 at 4:50)
Well I don't mind little the talking sometimes (as long as it is not as gay as in The Collective or it's not some moron who can do a double backflip but can't put a sentence together without using a word sick)... There is only one movie where only riding does the talking: Earthed series. But it's like porn you can't watch the whole movie in one shot. It's the same thing through all movie. Porn is very popular though...

flag lennoxrider (Jun 21, 2012 at 5:45)
All though i almost never agree with him, Waki for once has got it. Earthed for the win. A mtb film should just be radness start to finish. Slow Mo for if something was insane and you need to figure out what the hell happened, and the rest should be real speed

flag TheBAMFpro (Jun 21, 2012 at 8:16)
I personally love the life cycles style of film. I love to see biking movies with amazing cinematography but at the same time it's also about the riding and this film seems to have a good balance of both. I understand what your saying about the fact that it's not something completely ground breaking and too many interviews but I find It quite interesting to hear the riders voice their opinions. All in all I think it's all about personal preference and its virtually impossible to create something that appeals to all audiences.

flag redrook (Jun 21, 2012 at 12:06)
Don't get me wrong Life Cycles is great (I was at the premier in Whistler) but the fact is there is so much of it now. LC was a bit different, that was kind of the point of the film. But a film supposedly about riding needs to have more riding and less talking over the top, sometimes I just was an awesome track and some sweet riding (like NWD8, Follow Me, Seasons, Kranked 7). Basically it's a very particular style (Clay Porter's) that is, for lack of a better term, being ripped off.
Obviously you can't tell from a trailer, so lets wait and see.

flag TheBAMFpro (Jun 22, 2012 at 4:06)
Hmm ya I hear ya. too much talking is never good but I think in life cycles and 3 min gaps it worked because it helped tell the story. And ya i think in a movie like follow me it would have taken away from the story. And also I agree I can see a huge resemblance between this and clay porters films. Haha. But ya it'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

Good approach to a movie! There is a lack of "how to get there by doing", most people including me still have no idea how do they become so good, or more importantly what it takes to be so good, and pretty much all we get from the industry is like: Sam rides a Demo, buy it - you'll be faster. Even if there is a next to no chance to be that good, half way seems achievable if practised deliberately, so tell me more Smile

Thumbs up!
