Old School Throwback: Kranked

Jan 13, 2013
by Matt Wragg
So far our Sunday old school throwback videos have had a very UK feel, so this week it only seems right to head across the Atlantic for your Sunday entertainment. And what better film to dig up from the internets than Kranked? It's a solid 36 minutes of classic big mountains, sketchy bikes and Brett Tippie with comedy eyeballs. Want to see the unholy combination of a triple crown fork, risers bars and bar ends? Look no further. It makes you appreciate how far bikes have come on recently... Enjoy!

Unbelievable ,this puts Matt Wragg's travel argument bang into perspective, how many people would need a DH rig to ride like this ?
  • 6 0
Talent always wins ! Just a shame talent is not evenly distributed amongst riders , to be fair I would still shit my self on the stuff they ride on my big bike.. Funny thing is every now and then on uplift days in Wales some dude rocks up on a bike like this smokes half the riders there or more..
  • 27 5
Back then everything was breaking all over the place? .. bikes ended up being 60lbs to fix the problem.. i think bikes have pretty much found there rightful places these days..You could ride a cruiser down half that shit, doesn't mean i want to .. The one part of that whole debate i don't like is "people shouldn't because they dont need one" argument..you dont even need a bike.I see dudes on unicycles riding down shit. bunch of elitists morons, i think we know what to ride .. ITs what ever the fuk we fell like riding.... Levy is writing that shit for all the new people to the sport that dont have a clue (I hope) and his read will make people think twice before there next big purchase (Great).. but for dudes like me.. if its slopes down i will let go of my breaks until my big sluggish bike starts to feel light and snappy... and if it doesn't .. i will find a hill that does..
Yay!.. We all made super shitty bikes do amazing things..lets do it again!! no hostility.. big bikes truck. Don't shit on them with nonsense..

and an added bonus is that big bikes look 100x cooler then trail bikes

Yeah, but they are running V-Brakes. Do we need hydraulic discs? Nope, but they help us go further, just like a DH bike does.
  • 4 3
Bikes are still breaking all over the place and technology and bikes have got better they say!
  • 5 0
@carraig, I saw a ton of Magura hydraulic rim brakes in that vid. Those haven't changed a ton and are still in use today. And, hey, a 26' rotor has pretty burly stopping power...

I run an old demo with gazzi's, big unions, double wides and a banana azonic love seat, and you know what ? im never on the side of the trail with something broke like them boys I ride with with their "up ta date" weight weenie crapp. plus I can ride much further and longer than they even if their light weight wanna be dh/ freeride but really is an AM bike could keep up. I mean sure I let em ride ahead only because no one likes to be behind a gazzi which not only reaks havoc on a trail leaving a large foot print but Id Flick rocks, twigs and critters up in an otherwise would be face. my beast is 9 years old but ive only had to change brake shoes, THATS IT not other problems

This just got me so amped before my ride this morning, haven't seen it in years. What I love about old school videos like this is the sound track, makes you want to ride. Maybe I'm getting old but music in videos now days doesn't do it for me. PB could you guys find Chain Smoke for next week?
  • 4 0
It's not online as far as I can see, neither are Tread or Retread. We have a few other gems up our sleeve though...
  • 3 0
Chainsmoke, Jib, Down or Double Down, NWD or Search for the Holy Trail... then I could die happy.
  • 2 0
I own every one of those. anyone have a vhs player?
  • 1 0
I think the down movies are on netflix. I know they were available by mail 7 years ago. Might be streamable by now.
  • 2 0
bastard... only have NWD and maybe Holy Trail... somewhere...
  • 1 0

Well f*ck you GEMA. "Not available in your country... blabla ... music rights ... blabla"

I want to say that these old school movies inspires me much more than every new one. I like that rage and antsy music, guys that dropping and roosting on XC hardtails with no proper suspension and with no protection, besides helmets. Every time I looking these crazy guys I blame myself with my 203 x 203 bike and it makes me go bigger, faster and dont thinking about safe. I miss that time.
  • 10 0
lovin the helmet cam at 05.28
  • 4 0
It's a big ass go pro!
  • 2 0
It's pretty insane to see how far POV cams have come in fifteen years.
  • 1 0
Yeah pretty crazy! Their the size of two golf balls now!
  • 8 0
Know your roots!!! This movie has changed my life back in the days.
  • 4 0
Amen to that! This made my old hardtail into a dh shredsled!
  • 4 1
I never saw the original Kranked so looking forward to watching this. I had Kranked 2 which was awesome! The Super T and Berrecloth sections always made me want to go out and ride. The crash section was pretty brutal too Smile
  • 6 0
I just really miss fluorescent handlebar controls
  • 2 0
THANK YOU! I was looking for my copy of this lately - not that I have a VHS player any more to play it. So stoked to watch it. It's a testimony to the riders and the sport that their riding still holds up today. I'm so thankful to live in North Vancouver just a few blocks from the Fromme Trail head. We have tireless volunteers who keep the trails in good shape. Many of of the riders in this video are still on the trails and shoveling dirt. Still my heroes. Awesome.

i watched that movie many times and all kranked series, old NWDs superheroes, The Collective, and other oldschool movies, i love that times, the best time of freeride for me Smile
  • 11 0
The Collective is oldschool? f*ck me, this is what getting old feels like.
  • 2 0
 ^Haha. No sh!t.
  • 1 0
I'm 15 and The Collective seems new for me!!
  • 1 0
@grog Seriously--has it really been long enough to call these vids old school? Those were the days...back when I could recover from any crash without a visit to the doctor's first...
  • 3 0
Amazing how far the sport has come in such a short period of time. I'm still amazed though at how truly awful the soundtracks were to almost every Kranked movie though. Retch.
  • 5 0
Loved Kranked way more than New World Disorder
  • 1 0
Exactly! people ride what they have , or what they want! , i have my specialized stump jumper 100mm i ride on shore downhill EVERYDAY, sure i wouldnt get ejected into space if i had 8 inches of travel but when i get the DH bike im gonna be fucking ripper

These early vids pulled me through many long winters when I was suffering mtb withdrawal pains. Pure vintage porn.

Matt Wragg, thanks for bringing us back to our roots! I have to say that there is no such thing as triple crown forks. Haha. It's dual crown.
  • 2 0
top crown+bottom crowm+slider arch=90's math on how many crowns you have.
  • 1 0
that nomenclature used to confuse the crap out of me
  • 3 0
Slider arch is not a crown. Even before suspension forks (and then most early suspension forks adopted this) 'triple clamp' forks had crowns similar to a top crown on a dual crown today. The crowns were were bolted clamps holding the two stanchions (or blades on rigid) and the steerer tube. Three tubes, three clamps, hence a 'triple clamp' crown. Then came the dual crown fork.... Then came the confusion.. Matt Wragg should know better.
  • 1 0
@kootenay Thanks a bunch for the clarification. I used to have a Marz z3 and distinctly remember a bolted clamp for the slider arch.

I've seen this video a thousand times. I was at sea in the navy, and it was on loop in the workshop. Rockwell jumping from turn to turn always got me stoked. It's great to see that some of these guys are still around, and that Eli knows what going fast is all about.
  • 1 0
I haven't seen this in years! This movie helped me make a decision to move to the lower mainland. When I watched this as a teenager my jaw dropped at the Deep Cove section, and I knew one day I had to ride there. Watching it now, my jaw drops at the kind of bikes they rode all of it on! The pucker factor is still high for me on a modern AM bike with dialed geometry and sweet suspension!
  • 4 0
Ah...Tippie Big Grin gotta love him Big Grin the video makes me want to go out and absolutely shred!
  • 2 0
Holy crap the Element pushing the limits with XC geo. Now I know why my '98 Bad Ass Black Spice was such an awesome bike. Thank you RM !! Awesome riders and video. Reminds me of the NSX series - a must see.

This kinda makes me want to buy a Walmart bike and make a video just to see how well I could hold up (not comparing the bikes in the video to Walmart bikes is just the only type I can think off)
  • 1 0
Did anyone else notice the big ass recording studio on that dudes head. The first GoPro proto type? And we use carbon seat posts to save an ounce or two. Hats off to the innovators.
