This week for our old school throwback, we're going ghetto and heading for Australia. Mud Cows is probably the most low-fi, loose film of mates hurting themselves on bicycles that ever graced a VHS tape. Sketchy bikes, sketchy riding, sketchy filming and editing, a punk soundtrack and some brutal injuries make for wild combination. A lot of young riders who are making their own edits these days should watch this and appreciate how far a sense of fun and some personality can get you. It's not for the squeamish as there are some pretty graphic injuries many of them without the correct, internationally-certified protective equipment. And being Australians they swear a lot too.
been trying to remember those vid names for ages cheers man. funny they were the best thing available at the time must have watched em so many times, wish i still had em on vhs. im english dunno why the canadian flag has come up ha
You mean... like now? One of the primary reasons I love the MTB scene so much is that most of the riders AREN'T full of themselves.
All my encounters with the big names (which are frequent when you live in Whistler) have been very positive. I'd like to know why you think today's riders are seemingly void of humour and humility ?
I agree with miff... I've shared a few lifts up at whizz with alot of legends of the sport... they are just people at the end of the day, and I've had nothing but positive and fun experiences, most of them initiating conversation.... sometimes I'm not even realizing who they were (sorry Kyle J..hahaha...no, you can't have your multi back...lol) ...Most times I load up and enjoy the ride to the top...who knows who Im sharing the bench with... yeah, there are douchebags, both pro and novice, but overall the community is awesome and stands worlds above other sporting communities
hahahhahhahahahahhaahhahhaha i lolz soooo much . you are hilarious milf . full of yourself much? like whistler really ? wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwww you must be a pro ? who cares ? just shut your mouth ok
you might think this is shit now but when it was released i watched it over and over, together with stuff like crusty demons of dirt and various skate and snowboard vids .There was not the massive amount of content available at your fingertips via the internet .this kinda stuff was great back then to a young bloke who was bike mad still got mud cows and burning calves on vhs to this day.
Crusty Demons is still the best moto movie series ever created. It's basically like a rated R Nitro Circus... that includes Seth Enslow, the biggest maniac to ever ride.
i f*cking loved crusty demons /the hard way (seth film)drove my ex mrs insane with it .i watched them over and over freeride mx was better than just plain freestyle in my opinion.
Demented Chowder Pilots on the Run.
It had a Ministry soundtrack, humour, crazy guys doing crazy stuff on and off snowboards. Crusty Demons was seen as a breakthrough video - the extreme of the extreme - but 'Chowder Pilots' did it first.
AAgghhh no way, I was there. These classics lead up to the '96 WORLDS in Cairns, when Palmer (Hard core SHREDDER) battled Vouillouz (Smooth style FRENCHY) for the title. Sure were some mad times, can never replace the moments of madness for sure!!! Mudcows were ahead of their time!!! This set Cairns on the map of mountain biking!
No, Cairns was definitely '96 - it was the first year Palmer competed in the Worlds (IIRC) and at the time I had a huge poster on my wall of him shredding a low and loose turn on his M1 with Magura Racelines and a pair od Vans Oldskool's on.
To me it's like saying "golden eye on n64 is awesome!" Though it may have been back in the day, playing it now, you realize how crappy that game is with its shitty controls, and grey monotonous blocky graphics. However it still brings back great memories because we didnt care about all that at the time. We were just having fun. That's how I feel with these movies.
so they should let them run ramped ? i would much rather die a 2 -10 min death from a trap then be fed poison and rot from the inside out over a 3-5 day period. i have seen a zombie rat , slowly walking , holes in it from the poison , see in one side and out the other ... still alive but barely. its sad so many people use poison now because their lazy and dont know any better
I somehow fail to see how this should be MTB history. It's just a sped up video of a bunch of psychos doing some rather stupid things like thrashing a bike and a stereo with axes and hammers, jumping from cliffs and climbing a tree. When occasionally there is some footage of riding, it's rad, but that's only something like 1/4 of the video.
What would someone who isn't into biking think about us after watching this? - A bunch of morons who occasionally ride (crash) their bikes?
It seems like your thinking too far into this. Are you really worried about people you don't know judging you from a 15 yr video which has basically no affiliation with you ?
Well this was before Jackass which makes the whole thing way ahead of its time. Also, they didn't make it for it to become a piece of MTB history. The people who watched this again and again when this was all there was did.
The shop I used to work at was owned by an Aussie and he had the distribution rights to this in the UK back in 95 or 96. We sold hundreds of copies, on VHS, at twenty quid a go. That was when I was getting paid 15 quid a day, so it was expensive. I couldn't help but laugh when I borrowed a copy and saw how shit it was, oh those poor fools parting with their hard earned on such a bag of shite on the strength of a glowing MBUK review. If I spent 20 sheets on this back then I would have been shitting bricks when I watched it and realised what a waste of money it was.
Thank God for the internet is all I can say!
Ha ha,I got back all the memories! ...Those day's we so backward we barely speak english and dont have the right courrency to buy bike's. Who thought we buy one day a not second handed stuff? I think we all happyer those modest time's.
Funny seeing that dirt bowl. Its all been revamped and they have a comp there every year part of a week long celebration of mtb called Gravitate. Even a couple of riders from Mud Cows come along. They also do some dh runs on there old bikes. Pure gold.
God, I used to love this when i was a kid and my older brother was racing DH. Watched it over and over again. Well done Pinkbike, i think this Old School Throwback idea is one of your better ones
After seeing the recent release of old skool biking vids onto youtube I was hoping this would appear!
That rad bit remains to be the only part of a tune I can play on the guitar...
Aah brilliant memories of being a kid! But... wait a minute! They didn't leave the porn that came on after a few minutes of static at the very end of the tape!! We've been robbed!
Lots of GT RTS's, Hammer pads, and gaping wounds....awesome memories! What's it called when you go off a jump and let the bike go? Forgot, but lots of that too.
Haha this is one of the things that got me into riding. They were not too far up the coast from us and there was always a big crew of them at the races.
I love this! Getting rowdy and having fun is a great part of life (even if you nearly get your face sliced off amongst a Neanderthal bike attack party). Today, everyone has their nose so far up their sponsors ass, there isn't any room for a little reckless fun for fear of misrepresenting their brand and 'our sport'. Yes, I completely understand if we acted unruly all the time we would have an even tougher time with land-use and respectable pro salaries, but all I'm saying is live a little.
