Cold and wet in Vancouver? SoCal. The final leg of a weeklong zigzag down the California coast ending up at Supercross in San Diego. Thanks to all the folks who rolled out the red carpet, it was awesome to see everyone. We had so much fun, you know we'll be back soon.

Ronnie from Marzocchi had one last nugget and some nutritional advice before we moved south of LA.

First stop after our cheeseburger epiphany - Vans/Pro-tec in Cypress. Vans began in 1966 just about five miles down the road in Anaheim.

tour de california
The history Vans has in the realm of getting rad is unbelievable - Vans was one of the first to start supporting the Claw, back in his BMX days. The jersey is an original from Everett Rosecrans and family. Rosecrans set out to build the first action sports footwear BMX program.

This was by far the best looking ghetto we saw all trip - note the pimped 5 stack CD.

Off The Wall Art Gallery - Vans invited artists and team riders to represent what Vans and "Off The Wall" means to them through art.

Pro-tec Bucky Classic and Full Cut Classic. These two helmets are important in the history of pro-tec but we need to stress that they are not bike helmets. Please do not use one of these for biking...
Classic lids on the coping - The Classic Full Cut Skate helmets (right) were the first skate offerings from Pro-Tec in the '70s and were a huge success. The Classic Bucky came along in the '80's and are still in huge demand. Disclaimer: these helmets are actually not approved for bike use in California, or anywhere else for that matter.

Shovelhead 2 - Pro-Tec's full face helmets have some sweet retro styling going on. The artwork on the white Shovelhead is coined the mullet: strictly business up front, all party in the back yo! Apparently there's a cartoon Gully in there somewhere as well.

The Cyphon SL open face MTB offering features the nice clean lines Pro-Tec stuff is known for, the exclusive BOA fit system and it's ridiculously light.

One Industries threw a 15th Anniversary party at their HQ in San Diego. The Athertons toured the building and tested out One's fancy new heat press, their latest way to customize apparel. It's called the ONE ID program.

At one point the line-up for autographs was getting pretty deep - lots of race fans in SoCal.

The Athertons got to test out the the custom press and make some one-off jerseys - don't get excited, this is not the 2012 WC official kit.

Supercross pizza prices...one of the few things that doesn't wax and wane with the US economy.

SX was epic. Bubba had a yard sale and Villopoto led most of the race, was passed by Reed and then edged back in for the win with a sick pass in the final lap.

Ellsworth marketing chief, Summer Henderson - second from left. Massive thanks to Summer and her roomies for letting us run amok in their Ocean Beach home in San Diego. Seriously chilled-out culture and lifestyle.

That's it for Pinkbike's inaugural road trip to California, we'll be on the road again soon, as the great aqua-beaver festival known as Sea Otter looms large.

 shame about Vans Frown

used to be a true USA company, with USA manufacturing

years ago I used to ride and skate for Vans in the UK....

did not like the decision when they closed their USA manufacturing, laid off their hard working USA employees and moved their production "off shore"

which let them dramatically reduce their manufacturing costs so they could start spending a lot more on "marketing" and "sponsorship" rather than paying for a supportive domestic workforce who made a great product that any rider or skater was proud to spend their hard earned money on?

the old saying in the USA manufactured days was "man, I wish I had Vans", this soon became "might as well buy Airwalk, Vans or any other sh*t"...

Commencal Jersey was much more swagged out and looked better, im disappointed. Just my 2cents.

 Agreed...

The Team kits actually look pretty awesome, the purple jersey in the photo was just used to show off the capabilities of the heat press and One's custom program.
  • 11 1
Purple is the colour of royalty.
  • 7 1
"swagged out"...! Haven't heard that before...in this country people'd think you meant Rolled up in a sheet of canvas and lying under a tree...
  • 2 0
I don't mind the color. They just look a little plain thats all...The Athertons are still one bad ass Family!
  • 3 1
I love the way people still thumb down on this site for someone stating their opinion. And thanks for the clarification Ian, I didn't know that, cant wait to see the real kit then!
  • 3 1
The new jersey isnt quite as pimp as the old ones, but I like it. The purple is classy. Hopefully they refine it a bit over the coming seasons. I could see purple being their new signature color.
  • 1 0
Sorry to disappoint but that was just a one off that they made and signed for Pinkbike....

"don't worry , this isn't the official WC race kit."

Thank god , it's ugly as f*ck.

well , it's not that bad , but compared to their older kits it's pretty ugly.

jersey's look great. classic. The continental logo text should be white on the purple/blue background rather than on a big white square... which looks tacked on.
  • 2 0
It will be in the sublimated final jersey, i believe these were one off not only for the Athertons to enjoy in the mean time but for the video also. Definitely good advice though. With some of the logos, when using transfer material, you cant die cut them, especially with small text, because you will risk losing the integrity of the logo/text etc.
  • 2 0
To have you name on the back of a jersey sponsored by your companies would be a great feeling...

haha manitou on the garbage in the vid. ha
  • 4 0
Ha, well to be honest we got them a lot worse then that at Sea Otter last season... and then they had us over for Fajitas and Supercross in their pimp-ass RV's the next day. The Marzocchi guys are all class acts. Keeping a bit of the old rivalry alive just keeps things interesting! Like when we borrow tools back and forth in the pits... and the tools come back branded "Marzocchi" or "Manitou" in stealth places... haha. Good times.
  • 4 1
Actually You guys got us real good with the hidden decals last year. I was 2 weeks into my road trip last year and stopped to fuel up and grab some food in Lincoln Nebraska, so I pulled the locked gas cap off and finally noticed that there was a Manitou decal wrapped around the neck of cap??? I know it was stuck on in that decal battle in the pits of Sea Otter..lol.
