Bike parks...feet dangling, the gentle swaying of the lift as it carries you upward. There is just something about being sky high, surveying the runs below from a bird's eye view that gives my heart a little extra flutter. It's almost as if my senses are heightened with anticipation, just knowing the moment I hop off the lift, it's time to shred.

The month of June found us in New Mexico and Arizona, exploring a couple of bike parks nestled in the mountains of these southwestern states.

The journey to Angel Fire Mountain Resort gave us a bit of a sense of pseudo-isolation. Absent was the feeling of the hustle and bustle, the rush that mainstream cities can often inflict you with. In its place, the solitary town of Angel Fire welcomed us with relaxed vibes and a small town feel.

Angel Fire's slopes offer numerous run options. Divergent terrain gives the resort a unique characteristic, as well as providing any rider with a choice of numerous trails and varying levels of technicality to challenge themselves with.

Remnants of volcanic activity from eons past are present still to this day in the form of porous rocks littering many of the trails across the mountain.

A call of an elk resonates periodically through the air. The austere beauty of the surroundings and contented atmosphere of Sunrise Mountain Resort makes for a prime riding area to escape the searing heat characteristic of the lower lying Arizona cities in the summer months.

Dense patches of forest had us dodging and weaving through the pines, opening up from time to time into high speed, chunky ribbons of singletrack.

In some ways, we found riding at Sunrise similar to taking a step back in time. The trails are raw, and generally seem to follow a natural course of their own down the mountain.

For the most part, Sunrise Resort lets the naturalness of the mountain challenge the rider, only helping to complete or enhance the existing terrain with manmade additions when the need calls for.

As is common with any lift accessed area that nixes arduous climbs and provides ample gravity fed terrain to explore and tear up, we were hesitant to leave, but satisfied to know these diverse resorts awaited our, hopefully, eventual return sometime in the future. For, like any good trail or riding location, we departed with that driving, biking desire of wanting more.

This line: "Bike parks...feet dangling, the gentle swaying of the lift as it carries you upward. It's almost as if my senses are heightened with anticipation, just knowing the moment I hop off the lift, it's time to shred." in my opinion couldn't have been said any better. That's exactly how I feel when at my bike park. With that, great little film you have going on!

Great video guys and gals! Saw you at Sunrise that day and meant to come up and say hi but I was having too much fun on the trails! To those that think there should have been more speed in the video. PR knows what he's saying. I have been all over the western United States and Canada and ridden most parks and Sunrise is one of the steepest, gnarliest parks I've ridden(and that's when the dirt is moist!!!) You shredded some lines this "local" has never seen. Gonna have to go back and jump the ladder on "Chutes and Ladders". Holler next time you're in the Southwest and I'll show you some great AM riding in the southern part of the state. Cheers Brah!

We love riding our TR250's, they are great bikes, it will handle anything you put it through!! Transition also has a good crew of guys standing behind their product and will always help out their customers. Cheers, Colt

Nice vid Colt. I live here in AZ, first time I've seen anyone film Sunrise. It's not like a "real bike park", but it's still fun though... Smile
I've seen ya here & there around Northern Arizona... You gonna ever use any Flagstaff video? I know there's no chair, but DH shuttles there are a blast! Some of the best trails in AZ in my opinion. Smile
  • 2 0
Haha, Flagstaff seems to be one of our most elusive areas to film!! First time we went there to film Colt blew out his back on an AM ride and couldn't walk for a week, second time we went there we had catastrophic equipment failure. We plan on shredding and filming Flagstaff in 2013. We enjoy riding all the trails the mountains have to offer up there, something for everyone!! Thx for the support!

The Chili Express. Over the pond, past the elk and wild turkey. It's a beautiful scene looking backwards. After a minute or two, you hit that steep part before the summit. When I reach that steep ascent, I get the mad butterflies. I play it cool for my two daughters riding beside me but my heart is beating faster. I don't know if its the height or the fact I'm about to launch. No sooner than I step off, my Demo is being handed to me. When we are all ready I tell my daughters to stop and look around, because when you're old like me, this will be one of those special days to remember. Then we take off and rattle our brains on Ziggy.

I live in Arizona and have been to Sunrise. It can get pretty gnarly! You guys should come visit South Mountain in Arizona as well. There is shred to be had! Thank you very much for the Arizona edit. Not much publicity is brought to our state in terms of downhill mountain biking and it would be nice to see some footage shot in the desert, which I have never seen on Pinkbike, besides Enduro riding and Rampage. Great edit!

Thx for watching, glad you enjoyed! We had the oppertinity to film South Mountain in our first ever Projekt Roam: Chasing Gravity film, check it out-http://pinkbike.com/video/189738.

We look forward to filming there again someday.

Technical sections are cool. Most movies are focused on speed rather than the slower technical sections.
  • 1 0
this is true... I just wish we had something OTHER than technical sections in AZ... I want some flowy trails, dangit.
