Picture of the Month is an article showcasing the best Pictures of the Day from the month before. We take the most viewed photos from the previous month, and pick our favorites out of the top 10.

This month seems to feature Crankworx fairly heavily, in fact the first three photos are all from there. The one that really stands out though is number 2, and not because it's a great photo. It's an incredibly inspirational photo of Adolfo Almarza, a double amputee, racing in the Garbo DH race at Whistler. I originally almost left this image out, because as images go it's just not that exciting, and it's not a beautifully lit, well composed image. But I changed my mind because it has something else that is more important. Fraser's caption says it all 'What was your excuse again?"

Crankworx Whip Off milliseconds before the camera tap. See video 1 for more detail
  1. Brendan Fairclough whipping by finestone - 29,294 views

Garbo is where all the excuses come out from athletes. My max heart rate the dust the partying... Look now. What was your excuse again
  2. What was your excuse again? Adolfo Almarza by fraserbritton - 28,631 views

Goldman was the first to really trick this jump during the Joyride Slopestyle Qualifiers and even after the main event this is still my favorite shot on this jump. Huge
  3. Jamie Goldman with a Giant Superman by ianhylands - 26,217 views

Reilly finally got an opposite cork 7 on the stepup yesterday
  4. Reilly Horan at Dreamland by j-sully - 22,579 views

  5. DH drift by maximos - 21,942 views

Suzuki Nine Knights 2012 - 1st Day
  6. Niki Leitner at Nine Knights by fastfokus - 19,926 views

  Honorable Mentions include:

"Justin Roy in Squamish" by seanstdenis. This is our first runner up with 19,733 views.

"Tyler Gorz" by virtumedia with 19,461 views is another great shot.

number 2 should be number 1 IMO. There is no gnar in it and nobody doing a huge whip or some sort of other big trick. But the fact that this person is riding with prosthesis because he lost his feet is blowing my mind. He just hang in there and move forward while giving a f*ck ! This is seriously stunning and gets my entire respect !! wow ...

bthe only reason number two is popular is sympathy if i took that exact picture but it was someone with real legs it would probably get about 5 favs but throw some fake legs on and its photo of the month

Samtomkins..it's not sympathy..it's inspirational. It shows that you can overcome anything if you put in the effort.

Number 2. Almarza need a special post only for him. He is a champion in the rides and in his life. An example for Chile and all other guys in the world.

not sure why the top one is even up there, if he had all of his head in the frame then it would deserve its place, but since it doesn't i think it doesn't look complete

Re photo No. 5 - could we please discuss the difference between a drift and a skid?
  • + 3
flag GSuperstar (Sep 6, 2012 at 5:37)
I was under the impression that:

Drift - Is sliding but to continue to move in a direction without stop in motion.

Skid - Sliding but to come to an eventual stop in the movement.

Could be wrong?
  • + 2
flag dusse123 Plus (Sep 6, 2012 at 5:57)
I thought a drift was sliding on both wheels and and a skid was just the rear wheel?
  • + 9
flag sean-a-e Plus (Sep 6, 2012 at 9:09)
Drift - A result of cornering, usually at high speed, doesn't matter which or how many wheels. Skid - Brakes are in play.
  • + 2
flag lurchh (Sep 6, 2012 at 9:33)
@ Mondrakerlover you can have two wheel drifting or just the rear wheel drifting. Skidding is using the brake to lose traction but this is bad because it slows you down and rapes trails so Drifting>Skidding

flag iamamodel (Sep 6, 2012 at 15:41)
