Picture of the Month is an article showcasing the best Pictures of the Day from the month before. We take the most viewed photos from the previous month, and pick our favorites out of the top 10.

This month marks the first time a BMX photo is Picture of the Month, and it's an awesome shot. We also have a good selection of other shots in the list, and they're primarily freeride shots, noticeably absent this month are dirt jumping shots. The closest we get is Stigma's shot of Lukasz Suski's crash on the snow jump, overlaid with a sequence of a skier for perspective. This shot would have made the top 5, unfortunately it was too small to fit our big picture format.

Can the guys at Pinkbike work something like that out? If you get in Photo Of The Month, that photographer is able to sell that photo as a poster on the Pinkbike website. Its a win win situation, photographers have incentive to take better photos, $5 can be added onto each sale that goes to Pinkbike and the Pinkbike community gets some sick posters to hang up on their walls at home.

wow that is one of the best ideas I've heard in a looong time. I would gladly drop $5-10 to have one of these insane pictures framed on my physical wall instead of this pixelated power hungry one. !!!

It's definitely something we could do, of course all the photographers may not agree to it, and with shipping it may be a bit more than $5-$10, probably at least $25 for an 8x12, possibly more even. I personally sell 8x12 good quality photos for $50 plus shipping, and a lot more for larger prints so it depends on the photographer really, we don't own the prints so we'd have to agree on a price.

Whenever a photographer uploads a picture to Pinkbike, it is scaled down and then displayed on the site, but the original is still stored on the Pinkbike servers. To download the original, what you have to do is make a URL that will take you to the high resolution photo.

Steps are as follows:

1. Choose a photo to download. (Must be an image with the # 1000000 or greater)
2. Type "lp1.pinkbike.org/p0pb" into your browsers URL bar followed by the photo number you wish to download, then "/", then the # again, and finally ".jpg"
3. Press enter and the photo should either load, or a message should pop up allowing you to download it.

For example, to download the 2nd photo, your link would look like this: lp1.pinkbike.org/p0pb7811711/7811711.jpg

All credit for this method goes to blendo.

Dope... thanks for the tip. Just hope people don't use this to infringe on the photogs rights too much.

That is great. But people need to respect it not abuse it. Set it as your background, nothing else. It's kind of like someone riding your $14000 bike without asking you.

I have my doubts they do something like this. I once volunteered to create an application to set the POD as your desktop background, even sent them a rough application that worked, and never heard back from them. Maybe they will put more interest here since this poster idea involves money.

altrugon, read my note above. We are always interested in ideas like this, however as we have no rights to the photos for any commercial purpose we can't really sell them. So every month we'd have to contact all the photographers and see if the agree to take part and what the pricing should be. Not impossible, but logistically a lot more difficult that it seems...

Thank you so much for your reply Ian, but the idea that I offered didn't involved money. Reading my sentence above it sounds kind of a tough reply, trust me it is not my intention, I really appreciate you got back to me. Cheers.

No problem, I was speaking more in response to the poster/print idea. As far as the desktop background goes that same concept still applies though. We technically can't give away photos for anything, including desktop backgrounds. It may seem like a strange idea but technically the moment you set a photo as you desktop background and it downloads it to your computer you're in breach of copyright law. I don't think any photographer here is going to pursue that, but it is possible, and as such we can't really enable it.

Nike should seriously consider using that first photo for an ad. Besides the shot being fantastic, there couldn't be a better view of the riders heel and the logos on the shoes. Just sayin... you're welcome Nike

#3 was used for a specialized demo banner in 2010, i know because it's hanging on my wall. That sort of makes the picture of the month contest
quite watered down if you ask me. Nothing against the picture, it's a great shot i just thought that picture of the month is for the shots taken in that month. Out.
