New for 2013: Pinkbike MTB Awards

Sep 26, 2013

pinkbike mtb awards 2013

Another season is coming to a close, one filled with amazing race and contest performances, outstanding new products, and a number of surprising comebacks. From the hotly contested battle for World Cup DH domination, to mountain biking's inclusion in the X Games, it was an action packed year of competition. On the tech side of things, the wheel size debate raged on, a number of new contenders entered the suspension world, and the thick-thin-thick chainring became the year's must-have drivetrain accessory.

Pinkbike's MTB Awards will recognize the most significant achievements of 2013, with categories including everything from DH Bike of the Year to Best Pinkbike Commenter. But we won't be doing this on our own – certain categories will be chosen by a panel of professional riders and industry experts, while other categories will be opened up to you, the Pinkbike viewer. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for a chance to cast your vote for Pinkbike's MTB Awards.

The 28.7986578978" wheel is my personal 2013 favourite!
  • 81 2
that wheel size is for children. I want a 36" wheel fat bike.

Pinkbike should also include a category for their users:

- Most positive propped user.
- Most negative propped user.
etc.

A good one to have would have been best run in an FMB event.
  • 23 2
They should include a category for:

- User that gives most positive props.
- Scrooge who gives most negative props. (no award for him/her/it though!)

Game changing idea of the year:

The obvious fact that all wheel sizes besides 26" are pure evil, and we should all get into big internet wars about it!!!
  • 27 0
Best waste of ad space: Giant bikes for taking out a 2 page spread in Bike magazine pimping their decision for going solely 27.5" wheel size and showing 26" are superior in every category except for 3% deficit in roll over ability. Well done guys.....26ers it is!

What about Jerome Clementz? I seem to remember he had a decent year as well...
  • 4 1
tbh i think its ahrd for ppl to connect with clementz the same way ppl connect with the dh racers, only because its not streamed (unlike dh) that i know of. also since anyone has seen seasons, there pretty much routing for him.
  • 8 4
what about Martin Maes, okay, he hasn't won as many races as Stevie or Clementz, but he's most definitely shown he has some serious skills in a couple of the EWS rounds...
  • 67 4
What about Graves? He raced across multiple disciplines with awesome results, from 7th at the Aussie national champs in the xco then on the next day came second in the downhill. plus all his other results in the EWS and world champs. The man is a machine
  • 7 3
 Graves the strongest male athlete...
  • 8 1
Gee Atherton seemed unstoppable to everyone following DH racing except one person, Stevie Smith... Stevie for the win of male athlete of the year. Graves is awesome but not the worlds best in any discipline...
  • 7 0
I'm going with Graves too. Graves used to be the best @ 4X and can still be. He almost came away overall for the Enduro World Series @ his first year. And third in S Africa? I beg to differ. But you're entitle to your opinion and so am I. May the best man win!
  • 2 0
Valid points valid points but no... Shoulda, woulda, coulda's dont win awards... And also, everyone following DH this year saw a lot different style tracks that needed a wide variety of bike handling skills and Stevie excelled on all of them...
  • 5 2
 *cough*World Champions*cough*
  • 5 0
Sik Mick having an all timer too!
  • 4 0
i was thinking about Martin Soderstrom !
  • 5 0
It's a tough call, Gwin would have been the obvious winner the last 2 years but but no clear-cut dominance in any discipline this year. Graves just didn't win quite enough, so Stevie seems the favorite to me, unless Gee wins Rampage then he deserves it, unless Martin wins Rampage he deserves it, but if Semenuk wins Rampage he is a candidate, and if Stevie wins Rampage he must get it. Basically it all comes down to Rampage, which is prefect.
  • 1 0
ScaryGerry, you forgot Remi Thirion. He had a win this year too. Only him, Gee, and Stevie had wins. Kind of a slap in the face to be fair.
  • 1 0
@Jhou, true, World Championships was shameful... @cyrix, Remi's run was freakin amazing! Top 5 runs I have seen in my life including, Hill's Val Di Sol run of 2008, Aaron Gwin's run at Val Di Sol last year, Hart's insane run in the mud at Fort Bill and lets not forget, Stevie's run this year in Ste-Anne... Stevie's run in Ste-Anne is another reason why he should be male athlete of the year. Yes, Thirion's run was equaly as impressive but Stevie's world Champ.

P.S. I really hope we go back to DH and less these bike parky tracks we're seeing a lot of. Thirion is awesome when its steep and retarded. Can't wait till 2015!
  • 1 1
 What about 2014?
Stevie had a winning run by less than a second over Gee, that's not in the same class as the other great runs you mentioned. Stevie is World Cup champ, Miinnar is World Champ.

I forgot Martin was inured, so he isn't a candidate. Pilgrim is a candidate also since he won the points series, but he isn't going to win Rampage. I looked up Graves results this year on rootsandrain and they aren't even close to as dominant as Stevie's were. Regardless of what happens at Rampage,Stevie should win.
  • 2 0
yes Stevie by a little less than a second but it was pouring rain and track was waaay slower than when Gee ran it. Nobody was able to come close to Gee's time in the conditions Stevie did it in... It was amazing.

Ahahah "brutal" comments... first fkless kids, now a sensitive bloke. But you hit the nail on the head russbuss - I give you all children a hint: the only thing hurting a troll is zen ignorance, you got to make sure that his dashboard says: "no notices". I know it is hard to imagine before you get 25-30, and even harder before you are 20, but you will discover later in life that after certain age, the older you get, the less you care what others think about you or what you said.

  • 4 0
just trying to help. let's put it this way: the kids who are bullies are usually the ones who have the shttiest home life and childhood. they take out their angst on other kids because their parents take out their angst on them for whatever reason - these are usually the parents who have kids just to get to the next step of their life/relationship and who aren't really ready to be parents. it's a vicious cycle. unfortunately majority of parents fall into this category and therefore we end up with shtty kids in schools. just be happy you aren't one of the bullies.

Wanki you say? Thy who is without a sin may cast the first stone!

I do wank sometimes, maybe even twice a week in harder times, like this time of the month (to not take anythign from my wife, she is still attractive to me and she is horny). Recently I do it maybe 3 times a week cuz my wife is pregnant (just so you know it is mine!) and I hate having too much dirty thoughts about other women, particularly her model sister. I do lots of imaginative stuff as I stopped watching porn over 5 years ago. But I can't do that too often because I have some weird chronic infection, probably a fungus, since I was a kid and I was not washing up properly in these parts, so if I wank too often my wee wee gets red and itchy and I have to apply that creme from the doctor which burns as f*ck.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good story, but sometimes the truth is better than best fantasy aye? So... will that make you think you can call anyone a wanker again?

If this won't make all section deleted nothing will...
  • 3 0
LOL we should get deleted for talking about something everyone does, now the infection.... Idk bout that lol

Comeback of the year should go to Waki cuz every time he gets negative propped, his next comment has like a +4

Everybody loves to hate on Waki. We should cut him some slack. English isn't his first language, he has some really good insights, and never attacks anyone.
  • 3 1
In all honesty neg propping Waki is about the same as giving props to anyone else.
  • 19 1
Albek is right, I've been off my game lately like Gwin, while Waki has been consistently Waki all year long.

I'd have to say my debates with Waki over the merits of the front mech were my favorite of the year, but other highlights include theorizing why Gwin left Trek(propped to negative hell, maybe deservedly so), the Demo chainstay issue(neg propped to hell), safety wire for cables, Rod Ramseys comments, and the ongoing AVID brake debacle(not enough oil in the system for repeated long descents). Anybody who engages me on the merits of BB30 should be prepared to be silenced, everyone was this year...and I have no opinions on what the best wheel size is anymore; decide for yourself.

I recently was reflecting on some of my conversations and realized I have at times been overly malicious and have insulted my fellow mountain bikers on here and for that apologize.

I would definitely support that candidature! SB66 is the 2wheeled hero of the year
  • 1 2
My friend absolutely hated his SB66. Said the travel had a weird curve with no mid-stroke support, and that it actually felt like it was reverse-progressive (like the travel was stiff at the beginning of the stroke, then plush towards the end). He sold it and got an Ibis Mojo HD, which he loves. I would bet money against the SB66 winning bike of the year if anyone is interested.
  • 1 0
@tetonlarry could've been just the shock, my slayer came with a custom tuned rp23 that felt like that, firm at first then blew through it's travel
  • 4 3
I think SB66 can get enough love/hate for the geometry alone. It is damn long, which I personally love. Long will be the new slack&low. Shock tuning is always a good idea if one can afford it, I have Blur TRc with CTD Float which worked great in bikepark but on local XC trails it is as mediocre as a schock can be. Not only it is harsh but at the same time it bobs. Had Pushed rp23 on Nomad and it was unbelievable, has definitely changed my approach to "overthinking" suspension. Will defo send it to TFtuned for PUSHing.
  • 2 0
I use the sb66 for all mountain, incluiding some downhill stuff with the stok rp23, I love the bike because it can be used in flat, uphill, downhill, road, stones, jumps, dirt mud, everithing and feels fast in any situation, maybe not the fastest of all bikes but is a bike to use anywhere Big Grin with a lot of fun. And again 3rd place on WC DH and 2d overall in enduro Race Smile

DH bike off the year would be the Fury,
Male athlete off the year: STEVIE SMITH !! no doubt he killed it and he's awesome.

There are many, many more people adding many, many more constructive, useful contents and comments than me Sir. For all the hate you (and others who shall remain nameless on here) get, there can be no getting away from the fact that there are precious few people on PB who really know what they are talking about: you Sir, are one of them. I mean how many of the members (idiots?) on here have designed and had their own frame made? Yet these same people give you all kinds of hate. I don't get it. I have to mention (again) too, deeeight. Yes, the caps are annoying and he should know better being a mod they can rub people up the wrong way etc etc, however, there is no doubting if you want to know something, he can likely tell you.

You are just commenting a lot in a very balanced and informative way, and you aren't affraid of stepping into "weird subjects" sometimes - hence my nomination Big Grin

In retrospect I have no problem admiting that deeeight says a lot of good stuff, but what annoys me deeply, is not his blasts of "i know so much cuz I'm in that business for so long, and you know sht" - it has always been his shameless, complete conviction that certain new products, 650B in particular are the best things to happen to MTB lately, they are superior to previous designs. And the symptom of such deep conviction is the aggressive attitude of "anyone who disagrees with that thesis, is a childish imbecile". I am a floater, I always say: we'll see because how the hell can anyone be certain of anything? Especially in a sport with so many variables and quite dominating human factor? But neither of those approaches might be right, I admit that.

Some people like to float and they are often accused of not getting anywhere, but there are also people who are constantly after this final solution, they want to optimize everything - but they don't realize that this final solution (even if considered as a part of the process) might be a really loose ground to set your foundations into. If two extreme specimens of a kind meet, the bacon flies all over the place...

We almost forgot cyberhawk Big Grin

Builder of the year? Trail of the Year? Riding destination of the year? Facial hair of the year?
  • 1 0
Stevie gets the beard award obviously trail would be a-line or crab-apple hits (i know thIs and I've never even been close to whistler I've never left the east coast for that matter) builder would prolly be someone from the whistler trail crew for their works of magic and wonder and..... The riding destination would probibly be whistler, and that would most likely be every year that whistler gets it btw oh and highland mtb park is like second or third for riding destination of the year!
  • 1 0
A-line or Crabapple hits weren't built this year and Whistler may have lots of close competitors, especially amongst those who don't primarily ride park.

Gentlemen, Stevie Smith deserves this award. His season was unbelievable, shadowing Gee until the last half of the season, and narrowly winning the Championship. Its a no brainer really...
  • 6 0
 Great idea to have awards.
  • 2 0
game changing - emba & that emba is not governed by the uci. apart from the over marketing of the word "enduro" i think this is significant to the sport.

honorable mention game changer- rider who successfully tricks that scary top oakley sender. hehe
  • 7 1
no mention of Gwin?? ...yeah that's pretty accurate actually.

  • 1 0
I find these best of's kindof funny. Just something to pass the time, one bike or peice of clothing is gold to someone when it's crap to someone else.. that's why we have 1 million different brands, variety is the spice of life my friends..
  • 10 7
most annoying topic would go to the wheel size debate. 29ers are gay. 27.5 is pointless.
  • 3 2
 Here, here!

its like the 157mm hubs on the treks, good idea, but its not necessary

Sweet! Great idea. Best XC bike would be good for 2014, even if XC isn't all the rage in the PNW.
  • 3 0
Agreed. As it is, it's more like "Gravity Awards", instead of "MTB Awards". Oh well, XC isn't PB's thing. It's still kind of a cool idea though. Maybe not the most fortunate year to start, as true innovation was not abundant, but maybe it's going to motivate some people.
  • 3 0
trail bikes are pretty close to xc, those 130mm 29ers seem to be getting popular here
  • 2 0
ya i think it would be cool to see a XC bike category for best bike. Its hard to see what categories a Trail bike vs a Gravity bike. for example is a specialized enduro a trail bike or gravity bike?
  • 1 0
alot of the shorter travel 29ers would fit the xc bill. Niner brand bikes are pretty sweet looking even though most of us dont rep xc. the spesh, trek, and giant 29ers/650bs are dope too.
  • 3 0
gravity bike must be dual crown and have 200mm+ travel imo, so the enduro would be trail but I think the categories should be best dh, am and xc bike of the year
  • 3 0
Sounds interesting. We'll wait for it Wink

I don´t agree with this award thing. It´ll end up being a "simpathy vote" (Sickboy, Trainspotting)
