Queenstown Bike Park

Queenstown New Zealand:

Getting set to rival bike parks around the world, the Queenstown Bike Park located in the Ben Lomond Recreational Reserve high above Queenstown, opened for its first full biking season on Saturday 17 September. The result of collaboration between the Queenstown District Council, the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club, Skyline Queenstown and Cookie Time Limited co-owner and bike enthusiast Michael Mayell, the bike park had its first outing in a trial earlier this year.

Around 50 keen mountain bikers including former junior world downhill mountain bike champion and local Queenstowner Scarlett Hagen, Skyline chief engineer Ross Davidson who designed the hooks that allow bikes to be carried on the gondolas and project managed the park’s trial season, and several members of the Queenstown mountain bike club celebrated the opening of the first ever full season for the bike park.

Taking to the trails with infectious enthusiasm, downhill mountain bikers of all levels rode down – fast – before taking the gondola back up the hill to do it all again.

The world class bike park offers the only gondola-accessed downhill mountain biking in the southern hemisphere and features over 30 kilometres of purpose built tracks. Dubbed the ‘Whistler of the Southern Hemisphere’ by some of the biggest names in the international biking fraternity, the bike park has some famous fans including the royal family of biking top pro riders Dan, Gee and Rachel Atherton family after opening for a four-month trial season earlier this year.

Scarlett Hagen, who is now studying in Dunedin, says the trails in the Queenstown Bike Park are “right up there with the best in the world.”

“These trails are as good as those in Whistler or Morzine in France. There are trails for all abilities and the environment and scenery is just stunning. The beginner track is super easy while the black runs are seriously challenging.”

Widely acknowledged for his contribution to the establishment of the Bike Park, Skyline Chief Engineer Ross Davidson was delighted to welcome the opening contingent of riders.

“I’ve been a recreational rider who loves the descent for many years. Local mountain bikers have been pushing me to get it happening up here – we now have a really simple system for loading bikes, the support of the Skyline Board of Directors and management and a fantastic set of trails.

“It’s been a labour of love for many people. The tracks are just fantastic thanks to Nathan Greenwood of Phat Lines. I went to Whistler last year to see how our trails rated and am happy to honestly say we compared very highly.”

Ross believes that given the support of the town, which he says is building nicely, Queenstown has what it takes to become a major mountain biking destination.

“As people get behind mountain biking as a visitor activity, we’re going to start seeing bike racks everywhere,” he says.

Supporting the park with a unique sponsorship agreement is Cookie Time Limited (CTL) which provides a One Square Meal ‘bite’ bar with every bike park lift ticket sold. The official fuel of the park, One Square Meal is a breakthrough product that delivers one third of daily nutritional requirements.

CTL founder, Christchurch-based entrepreneur Michael Mayell, fell in love with the park during the trial opening earlier this year. He has since been an enthusiastic supporter helping with park launch plans, branding and a new website : www.queenstownbikepark.co.nz

Mayell is the proud owner of the latest in mountain biking downhill technology, the Zerode frame. Designed in New Zealand and made in the US, the Zerode is the top of the line for downhill handling

Cycling is a huge growth industry in New Zealand, with 1.2 million New Zealanders riding bikes and more than 200,000 bikes imported each year. Cycling tourism is also on the rise, both domestically and internationally. All those connected with the bike park see a strong future for Queenstown as a biking destination.

“We’ve got a world class downhill with the bike park, as well as a whole range of riding around Queenstown,” says Scarlet Hagen. “There are dirt jumps, x-country trails and a whole network of scenic rides. And it all comes with all the magic that Queenstown already has.”

The Queenstown Bike Park is open for an eight month season that finishes in April 2012. Lift tickets cost $60 for a full day or $45 for a half day.

No it was QueensTOWN New Zealand not QueensLAND Australia
  • 5 1
...and pretty sure he was talking about Coronet which are now closed to bikes, Not the trails in town, which the general public had to push or pedal up to get to. Still, I'd live there.

And because in whistler, from what I've heard, summer lasts 4 months. In New Zealand, summer lasts 8, winter lasts 3, and one month left over for inbetween.
  • 2 1
oh boy i wish it was in queensland, but alas your wrong and i don't get to ride no bike park Frown
  • 1 1
And for the record, you can still ride those tracks in winter, the bottom 30metres of elevation had some ice at ground level, but the rest was rideable, albeit i was a cosy -2 degrees, not sure what that is in Fahrenheit, but for us Aussies that equals Bloody Cold!

Was there last year for the "trial season" and it was absolutely immense! Soo much riding, the gondi is so much fun and convenient as hell (the base station is right in the middle of town)! So much shuttled riding on Zoot Track, Coronet Peak etc. Awesome bike shop (vertigo bikes) that will give you shuttles and even a heli ride! + the best burger in the world at Fergburger. So much stuff to do off the bike aswell bungy jumping, sky diving, jet boating etc. Paradise!

Skyline, Queenstown, NZ - UCI World Cup round in the future surely !!
  • 4 0
If they're making the effort to hold the World Champs next year in South Africa at the flattest downhill course in the world, then they could at least come here, where the tracks are actually downhill tracks, not cross country tracks.
  • 1 0
apparently skyline doesnt want a world cup held on the track. Idk why thats what i heard from a mate that i ride with. his dads best mate works for skyline
  • 1 0
 Man what a waste.

Hit these trails last weekend, soooo ballistic. It would be even scarier if the dirtjumpers amongst us found out about 'the best public access dirt jumps in the world'...IN THE SAME TOWN:

Went down a few weeks ago, so aweosme to finally have an uplift back in NZt! Some sweet trails, and plenty of scope for even more too. Better than many big chairlift accessed bike parks ive been to around the world, and this is thier first full season! Gotta get back there!
  • 2 0
pretty happy that a proper bike park has opened in the southern hemisphere. I was lucky enough to be to ride over in Lets Gets for a couple of days last year and loved it. ever since i have dreamed of bike parks opening more close to home, i guess they have just come true
  • 1 0
I live literally a 5min pedal from the gondola base station. So sick! ride it everyday and love every minute of it. I urge anyone looking at a biking holiday to come visit, half season passes are cheap even if you only stay a few weeks. loving my life right now

I plan to visit new zealand for a couple months possibly in 1 or 2 years. What time of year is the best to go?
  • 1 0
 December onwards.
  • 1 0
 Sweet thanks!

And if this is not enough, try Fat Tyre Mountain bike tours. I had a go at Heli Biking with them a few years back on the Cardrona Run. The airport is actually really close to close to where the bike park is. Heli Biking rocks! Highly highly highly recommended! The flight in this amazingly scenic part of the world that is the South Island is worth the ticket itself, serious. Then you climb out of the chopper and ride your way down where a van picks you to a good pub. The value is phenomenal considering the bike ride and the memories. www.fat-tyre.co.nz
  • 1 0
Its seriously good value! a half day pass is all u need its still 5 hours riding managed 10 runs and was well and truely stuffed good thing theres plenty of pubs close for a refreshing brew!
  • 2 0
Don't tell to many people about it Cool

I went down there twice earlier in the year and it was a great setup, will be back some stage this season for sure.
  • 2 0
looks amazing! noticed on their website that the bike park is not patrolled. what's with that? I'm sure plenty of people would volly their time for a free pass.
  • 2 0
There was a volunteer patrol system in place last summer for the trial season. Unfortunately as great as it was there many detractors with the system. People not showing up for their shifts being one of them. It was seen for this summer that it would be better to leave it unpatrolled and use the emergency services as well as having many quality qualified first aid people amongst the Skyline staff that responses would still be done quickly as well as supplying great medical aid when needed. I think as the Park grows in popularity it will have to be something to be looked at again. For many of us who have been riding the hill in the years before the Park it is just the same as having pushed up. Just now we have a gondola for our ride. Ride at your own risk.
  • 4 0
Shit like that would never fly in the US NZ killin it once again!
  • 2 0
That's because of the american lawsuit culture. If someone crashed and hurt themselves in the states and wasn't helped by patrollers, even if they were informed of the lack of patrol upfront they probably still would win the suit on the grounds of negligence.
  • 2 0
It's slowly starting to become an issue here too, i hate it. That is awesome for NZ, wow, i wish South Aus would get their act together. Lame ass state government, backwards thinking greed mongers. Yeah, lets just put up speeding fines again, Yay!
And drive even F#$%'n slower than we do now woo hoo!
  • 1 0
Yes that's Australia 2011. NZ is way ahead of us with their liability laws.
  • 1 0
they tried it but i didn't really work ..It's only the first season and lots of things need working out

  • 2 0
So many great tracks to ride around here. What sort of bike are you bringing?
  • 1 0
Get in touch with Vertigo Bikes in town! Can either do shuttled downhill runs on Skippers Canyon or if you want an amazing experience go on a Heli Ride with them about 2 hours decent from Cecils peak!!
  • 1 0
Was just gonna rent; but glad to hear there's still some gravity nuggets to be had. After two years in Singapore I need to be at the top of a mountain pointed downwards!!!
  • 1 0
this is fantastic news. since i've been wanting to take a trip there anyways, I'll certainly be going now. although i think i'll give them another year or so to dial it in and expand some.
  • 1 0
amazing, downhill riding in the center of town.. some biking and luge, and sky swinging all on the same mountain, oh and a great restaurant.
  • 3 0
Flights just booked for next easter... Stoked!!!
  • 2 0
sorry to bum you out but you should check on there web site, I'm sure they closed for bikes over xmas n new year and for easter
  • 2 0
The bike park is closed to bikers over Easter weekend. Due to Skyline Gondola itself being a major tourist attraction itself it is too busy to facilitate bikers and every day normal tourists.
  • 3 0
its all good!!! if you cannot ride the gondola over those weekends, go to 7 mile in queenstown, the tracks are awesome!! you will have to pedal though, then do shuttle runs at wynyads and mini dream track and then boost up coronet peak to do shuttle runs of the zoot track, and then go rip up the gondola when it re opens for mtbing. queenstown really is mountaining heaven!!!! i live 3 hours drive away in dunedin and feel like a local in qt now, it ROCKS!!! dunedin has got some sick trails also. look me up when you over here and will show you round.
  • 2 0
Cheers guys, Ill have to settle for the heli lift then, but will check out your suggestions as well.
