Race Face's Atlas line has been a long-standing mainstay for the Canadian component manufacturer, and they have made some well thought out changes throughout the line. Gone are the AM and FR designations - Atlas is now one line of products designed to bridge the needs of AM and FR/DH riders: light enough for AM, tough enough for FR and DH. Some products are being discontinued, such as the D2 stem, which is replaced by the Atlas stem (featured below), while others are simply revised or given incremental improvements. A solid component line has become that much more…solid.

ATLAS STEM
Leading off the list is the new for 2013 stem, designed to replace the old Atlas AM and D2 stems. Like past offerings, it is 100% CNC machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum, and available in several colours: Black, Rum Red, and Blue, with laser etched branding. There is only a zero rise version, and two lengths available: 50 and 65mm, which weigh 150g and 170g, respectively. If you need a stem with rise or a longer length, the Turbine line has you covered - Turbine is XC light but definitely AM tough (look for a review in the coming months on those bits). With all that out of the way, we have to say this new stem looks mighty fine and will complement the rest of the Atlas line nicely, not to mention grace the front of any bike you choose.

ATLAS CRANK
First, the BB and interface has changed from X-Type to EXI (external ISIS), which has been used and proven on other RF crank designs, and comes with several advantages: one, EXI uses a crank stopper, meaning it butts up against the spindle shoulder when fully installed (the old X-type mushed up into the end of the splines without a positive stop, putting it at risk of becoming over-compressed, which leads to bearing over torque). Second, the Atlas cranks come with the new Team DH BB, which features retainer bearings, a 20g weight savings, and shorter threads than X-type. It also means that installing or removing your Atlas cranks will no longer require massive amounts of torque.

Race Face 2013 Atlas Cranks

Gone are the agonizing curse-filled crank installations. Mechanics will be pleased enough with that, but there's more! The familiar red and black spacers will now come pre-installed on the crank stopper for standard chainline spacing. No more lost spacers or wondering whether you used the right combination of them. You'll still get additional spacers in the box for fine tuning your chain line, but for most of you, life is a bit easier now.

Race Face 2013 Atlas Cranks

Next, Race Face have significantly reduced the Atlas crank's weight. Besides the 20g savings in the new BB, another 30g have been shaved off of the arms - mostly due to a redesigned RH arm interface and a lighter alloy bolt and puller cap (vs. the larger steel X-type puller cap on older Atlas cranks) as well as a composite granny spider, replacing the old alloy one. All told, and depending on which configuration you use, the new Atlas cranks will weigh as much as 100 grams less.

Heel clearance at the spindle has been increased by 3.5mm, and the chain ring tabs are thicker than in the past, requiring a bash guard with lower profile tabs. Atlas is 1 chainring and bash or 2 ring and bash compatible but due to the revised chainring tabs, Atlas cranks are now no longer 3 ring compatible (which makes sense given intended use as well as modern day gearing configurations). Of course, we would be remiss if we failed to mention the new 'raw' finish to the Atlas colour palette, which also features red, blue, orange, black and stealth.

ATLAS BAR
The Atlas bar remains unchanged, except for a graphics update - the Whistler topo map replaces the original North Shore map, and the details match the Atlas stem and crank nicely. There is however a new offering as well, Atlas is now available in a high rise version, to go along with the existing Flat bar and 1 1/4" rise bar.

Raceface styling is much more 'aggressive'.

your right mate, I prefer race-face cranks over any other cranks on the market. Now they have stuck with the EXI interface, thats perfect for me because I have the old raceface ride cranks that have the interface and it's just bliss installing and taking off compared against the x-type which I hate due to the poorly chosen function which resulted in rounding off the end cap trying to remove the crank and sadly resulting in destroying the crank due to these issue's( it was impossible to remove).

Wait, your comparing Atlas cranks to Saints? Seriously? That's like comparing Saint cranks to Profile DH cranks. Atlas are NOT DH cranks. They are ALL MOUNTAIN cranks. And cranks that are effing light years weaker than Saints.

I have seen more than a few handfulls of Atlas cranks go in the garbage can over their lifespan, but, if Saints can handle WC BMX, WC DH, WC 4X, and pretty damn hardcore Rampage events (yea where were all the atlas cranks at rampage...), then I'd say there is no comparison. Even more so when everyday people who don't know how to ride are destroying RF Atlas cranks, and cranks even make Saints tremor. (and no, I'm not a Shimano OR Saint fanboy... I run Profile DJ's on my Tmac, and Profile race on my Lahar.

I know this won't go down well on this particular website, but I'm a bit non-plussed by this 'new' range. Don't you think it's time Race Face did something really new and innovative? What was the last genuine leap forward for them? The move from internal Isis to external BB's?

There's nothing here that makes me 'need' Race Face products. I think they're in danger of becoming just any other component company, which with their heritage, is a real shame. Especially at their prices.

flag ninjatarian (Apr 19, 2012 at 2:23)
brit-100 Seriously? Raceface has always been at the front of innovation... thats why they are who they are. Ever hear of the Sixc line? Its expensive- innovation comes at a price. For the rest of us, Atals pretty damn good for the money. How much more can you do with an alloy crank set, stem, and bars? No one else has that strength to weight to price ratio. Name another company who has been more innovative with cranks....

Raceface has been my favorite componant company for a long time, perhaps my favorite MTB company overall. Made in Canada is a huge factor for me, then throw in the specs and price... Its silly to look elsewhere. Raceface and Canada will always get my money so long as they make a product that fits the need. Screw Asia and their overpriced parts.

Its true that lots of companies are making quality products right now which means that not a lot stands out against the rest (for most companies), but the finer details - the nc machining, the weight savings etc. - are what make these products stand out.
Not much i know but most consumers have a wide range of brands to choose from and you cant really go wrong with the majority.

Brit-100 ever heard of the term "if it ain't broke don't fix it"? You don't always have to re-invent the wheel. Plus last time I checked Shimanos been using the same hollowtech technology in their cranks since, what? 1995? The biggest update they've really had too is the change from isis and slight changes to the arm designs for better strength and or weight savings. Also they still don't have a carbon crank to compete with the Srams XO or Racefaces Sixc cranks.

 Isis? Oh joy!
Why are Raceface obsessed with finding ways to mount crank arms other than the two pinchbolts/end cap system that Shimano/FSA/Controltech etc use? I mean for God's sakes, they've dug the I-word out of it's grave instead of going with the one that works already, what's wrong with their heads?!? Can't wait to start hearing about wobbly crank arms again, the ISIS spline has such a fine reputation for security.
  • - 1
flag obcycles-92 (Apr 19, 2012 at 5:01)
what the hell you are on about isis cranks becoming wobbly, I've had first hand experience with cranks that have the EXI interface and still use the cranks now. Your right about less security due to the interface change in some aspects, but an average bike thief wouldn't know how to remove the cranks correctly or even the non-techinal way( just a hammer and allen key).

The way I think about locking my bike up, I put my self in the thief's shoes and destroy any possibility of easy removal. I carry two harden steeled chain and lock's both different lengths along with thick steel cable to thread through my seat and wrap round and thread back to latch with my main padlock.

Judging by ps3maniac92's name he's too blacked out on video games and not old enough to remember the crankiness and quarks of the ISIS spline interface(ie crank arms falling off at random regardless how you torqued them down).

flag hampsteadbandit (Apr 19, 2012 at 8:08)
here's the thing about Shimano's Hollowtech 2 crank / axle interface:

its extremely clever because it takes the best bicycle headset system on the market (Dia Compe's "A-Headset") and redesigned it for a crank system (added splines to axle and non-driveside arm), with outstanding results over many years of abuse.

it allows very simple installation, its extremely stiff for the given crank weight, the mechanic works away from the drive side (sharp chainring teeth), and it does not require more than 12-13nm of torque to install (the twin pinch-bolts on the non-drive side)

most importantly for FR and DH riders, it allows initial set up of chain device spacing without full crank installation, and it also allows take up of any "flog out" in the crank axle / crank arm interface by a slight increase in torque of the twin pinch bolts

a BIG problem with the Race Face X-Type crankset design was the use of a "interference fit" axle / crank arm interface, which gets less secure each time the crankset is removed and reinstalled

I've owned and worked on TOO many cranksets in 25+ years of wrenching and have never had much personal luck with Diablous, Atlas or Evolve crank systems, and the same is true of other brands like SRAM / Truvativ, or even BMX brands like Profile using the interference-fit axle/arm interfaces, all have been replaced with Shimano HT2 with no further issues....(and with Primo Hollowbite for the BMX which share the Shimano HT2 style setup with a difference crank axle / arm profile)

flag covekid (Apr 19, 2012 at 8:29)
This isn't an isis interface (like the old 3 piece cranks). It's just a SPLINE at the end of the spindle. RF has been using the EXI interface (with isis spline) for the last 4 years on their XC cranks, but just finally extended it to the Atlas line. It's a proven, bombproof system that makes their cranks much easier to install and there's no wearing out of the interface like the old x-type. Before you slag the system, lern a bit more about it and don't just focus on the word "isis"
  • - 2
flag hampsteadbandit (Apr 19, 2012 at 8:56)
I know all about the EXI interface, and it does not solve all the problems of the older X-Type crankarms

both crank arm systems still use an "interference" fit to install, and its not just RF but SRAM / Truvativ cranks that also suffer issues with interference fit crank axle / arm interfaces

the problem with an "interference fit" crank arm is that every time it is installed, it slightly enlarges the axle socket in the crank arm, over time this cannot retain the axle and you get creaking and free movement, which then accelerates the "flogging out" of this interface

this is the reason Shimano switched to their successful HT2 interface

flag obcycles-92 (Apr 19, 2012 at 23:37)
I've got some raceface ride cranks with the EXI interface, I've had am for the past year and still use am now, I haven't came across any issue's of what you have pointed out. I'm pretty sure the raceface designer's and engineer's have looked into both interfaces and compared strength's and weaknesses to decide on the outcome.

race face always makes beautiful products I think they are the only company who really understands to keep things relatively standard so they can be used for years to come, its not like they push useless changes into the bike world they simply just know how to pimp it out with looks and quality. for example eastons new 35mm bar is extremely unnecessary change to the bike industry trying to create change at the cost of consumers like you and me, if race face can make a 785 mm bar (plenty enough width) and have it strong enough not to bother increasing the bar diameter at the clamp then why on earth does easton need to make such a change. at least race face is a little more tradition and offers huge ranges of products to suite any needs. I wish race face made everything from derailleurs to forks. That way i could tell customers thing like their 7 speed cassette can easily be replaced instead of being the barer of bad news and telling them their bike is irreparable. bike industry is a bunch of goons, but people like race face still spark my interstest and always keep that sexy oldschoolness that empties my wallet every year. simple, sexy & strong.

I love the look of the new atlas stem and those high rise atlas bars are the bomb! I guess I don't really get why so many people are saying that Race Face isn't innovating, i mean you don't need to redesign the wheel every time you come out with a new product. In my opinion, Race Face is doing a great job of refining proven designs in the industry. I will agree however, that the Shimano pinch bolt system on their cranks is the best design out there and is one of the main reasons I decided to put the SLX cranks on my all mountain bike. Race Face brings what a lot of people want in their components, refined high quality products. They are one of the few companies that still makes their components in Canada and for a lot of people that's an important factor. Keep up the good work Race Face!
